Dissertação de Mestrado — Instituto de Relações Internacionais, Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro. "Travesti Prostitution in Brazil: reading agency and sovereignty through dissident sexualities" investigates the marginalised subjectivities of travestis within the Brazilian context, to analyse discourses both in the local and international realm. I conduct a critique of discourses on sex-trafficking and prostitution, pointing to the naturalisation of gender norms that hinders an understanding of experiences that exceed the binary "prostitute versus trafficking victim". To do so, I analyse, through a foucauldian and butlerian queer perspective, travestis subjectivities that constitute themselves precisely in the field of prostitution practices. I propose, therefore, that these experiences allow both resistance and subjection to gender regulations that are legible in the preset society. Finally, I present a critique to the formation of a biopolitical society in Brazil: pointing that a sovereign power predominates in "making die" these unintelligible bodies, so that subjectivities considered normal in gender, race, and class terms can be "made live". This opens the possibility of reflecting on how the Brazilian state denies its queerness as it tries to adequate itself to homonormative speeches, as well as to discourses of defense of LGBTTQI community, that emerge in the international realm, but still allows that a sovereign power is exercised over non-ideal transsexual bodies. "Prostituição Travesti no Brasil: lendo agência e soberania por meio de sexualidades dissidentes" investiga as subjetividades marginalizadas de travestis no contexto brasileiro para analisar discursos no âmbito local e internacional. Conduzo uma crítica de discursos sobre tráfico sexual e prostituição, apontando para a naturalização de normas de gênero que impedem o entendimento sobre experiências que excedem o binário "prostituta versus vítima do tráfico". Para fazê-lo, analiso, por meio de uma perspectiva foucaultiana e queer butleriana, as subjetividades travestis que se constituem justamente no bojo das práticas de prostituição. Proponho, nesta lógica, que essas experiências permitem tanto sua resistência quanto sujeição às regulações de gênero que são legíveis. Por fim, apresento uma crítica à formação de uma sociedade biopolítica no Brasil: apontando que um poder soberano predomina em "fazer morrer" estes corpos ininteligíveis, para que se permita o "fazer viver" de subjetividades consideradas normais em termos de gênero, raça e classe. Isso abre a possibilidade de refletir o Estado brasileiro que nega sua queerness ao procurar se adequar aos discursos de homonormatividade e de defesa da comunidade LGBTTQI que surgem no âmbito internacional, mas ainda permite que se exerça um poder soberano sobre corpos transexuais não-ideiais. Entre ellos se encuentra la representación de la figura del gitano como modelo de actuación para unas generaciones de oyentes a quienes les preocupaba el aspecto cultural a la contra, así como los modelos de vida alternativos a los legitimados por la clase media de la época. El objetivo de este estudio es analizar el componente romantizado que se presenta en la obra de Morrison alrededor de su representación del gitanismo, así como observar cómo esos elementos generan primero una función deontologizante y después una resignificación de los espacios en tránsito ocupados por la(s) imaginación(es) de esta comunidad como pueblo nómada. Para llevar a cabo el análisis se atenderá a varias canciones de la primera época del autor norirlandés, y se explicarán las funciones de representación del gitano en el entorno del espacio y de una epistemología contracultural. Although the British and French governments had already abolished it, slavery was still rampant in the United States, Brazil, and the Spanish colonies of Cuba and Puerto Rico during the 1850s, while serfdom subsisted in Russia. Moved by the novel’s afecting depiction of the horrors of enslavement, a transatlantic public coalesced around the universalist moral values through which Stowe ex- pressed her call for abolition: “See, then, to your sympathies in this mat- ter! Are they in harmony with the sympathies of Christ? or [sic] are they swayed and perverted by the sophistries of world policy?” (452). In the Protestant brand of sentimentalism found throughout Uncle Tom’s Cabin, the experience of sympathizing with the enslaved other is circumscribed within a pre- ideological order of feelings. In the pursuit of a “right” feeling determined by the universal spirit of “Christianity,” the ideal sympathetic subject is able to transcend the artifcial divisions fostered by the politi- cal sphere (“world policy”).

    351 After the earthquake in April of 1906 she recreated her studio in Berkeley on Bancroft Way where she briefly shared her space with the “wood carver” Miss Mildred Holden.15 Two of Campbell’s first commissions were to design cover illustrations for The Courier, a weekly magazine in Berkeley, and art work for another journal, Western Tours.16 She was briefly a “staff artist” at the Overland Monthly which later published a very flattering biography of the artist with fine reproductions of her celebrity portraits.17 Of all of Berkeley’s female artists in this period she was by far the most socially dynamic and popular. Campbell was the first to publicize her studio with large conspicuous advertisements.18 She participated in major exhibitions throughout the East Bay, including the Fifth Annual of the Oakland Art Fund at the Starr King Fraternity in 1905.19 Her only portrait miniature to survive the destruction of her San Francisco studio, a “splendid” study of Elsa von Monderscheid, was given a place of honor at Berkeley’s 1906 Studio Building Exhibition.20 In 1906 Campbell contributed to the Inaugural Exhibition of the Carmel Arts and Crafts Club and to the California State Fair.21 At the State Fair in 1908 she won separate medals for the best sketch and the best painted miniature on ivory.22 Several of her miniatures attracted favorable attention at the San Francisco Arts & Crafts Association.23 In 1907 her portraits in miniature were selected for display at San Francisco’s Sketch Club and at the opening of the Del Monte Art Gallery.24 That year she also displayed miniatures at the Alameda County Exposition in Oakland’s Idora Park.25 According to Hanna Larsen of the San Francisco Call, the young Berkeley artist was expanding her artistic horizons, no doubt due to the impact of photography on the demand for miniatures:26 Miss Frances Soule Campbell has branched off into illustrative work and has been very successful.
