[1] Should you? This short e- book presents arguments for and arguments against believing in modern Western astrology. WHAT IS ASTROLOGY? Astrology is an “alternative” belief; that is, a belief outside the mainstream. Astrology is the belief that the positions of celestial bodies influence people and events here on Earth. For example, astrologers believe that the date, the time, and the place of your birth shapes your personality. Natal Charts Natal Charts (i.e., Birth Charts) are a fundamental tool of astrology. Natal Charts graphically display -for the date, the time, and the place of your birth- the positions of the Zodiac Constellations, the planets, and other relevant information. Figure 1. Natal (Birth) Chart Astrologers use Natal Charts for divination and fortune telling. For example, astrologers use Natal Charts to describe your personality. Horoscopes Horoscopes published in newspapers are generalizations, solely based on Sun Signs (e.g., Aries), about warnings about things happening, announcements of good things to watch out, and so on and so forth. © 2020 Dr. Anthony Rodriguez 6 BRIEF HISTORY About four thousand years ago, the Babylonians (in what is present Iraq) began watching the night skies and recording the positions of celestial bodies as well as events here on Earth. The relationship between the Babylonians' observations of the skies and the events here on Earth gave birth to what is called Babylonian astrology. For example, a lunar eclipse (a so called omen) might have been associated with an event here on Earth such as the death of the king. The Enuma Anu Enlil are multiple clay tablets detailing celestial events and omens written in cuneiform script. [2] Babylonian astrologers divided the sky into twelve segments and associated each segment with one of the so-called Zodiac Constellations. At about the same time, for religious purposes, the Egyptians divided the skies into thirty-six segments, called decans, and associated each segment, that is, each decan, with a star or a constellation. During the reign of Alexander the Great, Hellenistic astrologers integrated Babylonian astrology and Egyptian astrology and paved the way to modern Western astrology. It is worth noting that the Indians, the Chinese, and the Mayans in Mesoamerica, also practiced astrology. Since the origins of astrology as is known today, about four thousand years ago, astrology has evolved in up and down cycles. Roughly speaking, from about the second century BC until about the Renaissance, astrology developed steadily. Then, from after the Renaissance until the beginning of the twentieth century, astrology remained largely unchanged. Finally, since the beginning of the twentieth century until the present, astrology increased in popularity. For more information, watch the 2014 YouTube video titled History of Astrology by David Cochrane at https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=dmyamlCHjLQ UNDERLYING NOTIONS In order to intelligently evaluate whether or not one ought to believe in astrology, one ought to have a ground-level understanding of the foundations of astrology and astronomy. The following notions are such foundations. © 2020 Dr. Anthony Rodriguez 7 The Earth's Motions It is common knowledge that the Earth rotates on its axis and orbits around the Sun. It is less common to know that the Earth rotates on its axis every 23 hours and 56 minutes, not 24 hours, and that the Earth orbits around the Sun every 365-1/4 days, not 365. Like other spinning bodies, the Earth's axis of rotation “precedes” every 26,000 years. That is, the axis revolves in a circle. Precession causes major climate changes. By the way, the tilt of the Earth, currently about 23-1/2 degrees, changes from about 21 degrees to about 24-1/2 degrees every 41,000 years. Figure 2. The Earth's Precession. [a] Other motions are, first, the motion around the baricenter (i.e., the center of mass of the Earth), which causes the Earth to weave back and forth as the Earth orbits the Sun. Second, the change in ellipticity which causes the orbit of the Earth around the Sun to be sometimes more like a circle and other times more like an ellipse. The change in ellipticity also causes major climate changes such as Ice Ages. Finally, the tilt of the Earth, currently about 23-1/2 degrees, changes from about 21 degrees to about 24-1/2 degrees every 41,000 years. The Celestial Sphere The Celestial Sphere is an imaginary globe around the Earth. It is a construct for using a coordinate system to locate celestial bodies. The system is similar to the coordinate system (known as GPS) used to located places on Earth in terms of latitude (North-South positions) and longitude (East-West © 2020 Dr. Anthony Rodriguez 8 positions). Figure 3. The Celestial Sphere [b] The Celestial Sphere is a two dimensional view of the Universe, which, of course, is three dimensional. On the Celestial Sphere, celestial bodies appear to be next to each other. That is, they appear to be the same distance from Earth. In reality, the distance of the celestial bodies to Earth varies significantly. Figure 4. 2-D View The Earth's Ecliptic The Earth's Ecliptic is an imaginary plane on which the Earth, the Moon, the planets, and the so called Zodiac Constellations orbit around the Sun. Figure 5. The Earth's Ecliptic. [c] © 2020 Dr. Anthony Rodriguez 9 The Equator & the Celestial Equatorial Plane The Equator is an imaginary circle around the Earth that divides the Earth in two: The Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. Figure 6. The Equator. [d] And, the Celestial Equatorial Plane is an imaginary plane extending outward from the Equatorial Circle. Celestial bodies are above or below the Celestial Equatorial Plane. Figure 7. The Equatorial Plane. [e] The Horizon The Horizon is a 360 degree circle around an observer standing somewhere on Earth and facing South. Therefore, the East is on the left, where the Sun rises, and the West is on the right, where the Sun sets. See Figure 8 on Page 11. The position right above of the observer is called the Zenith and the position below the observer, that is, under the observer's feet, is called the Nadir. See Figure 8 on Page 11. © 2020 Dr. Anthony Rodriguez 10 Figure 8. The Horizon. [f] Celestial Coordinate Systems There are three Celestial Coordinate Systems: The Ecliptic Coordinate System, the Equatorial Coordinate System, and the Horizon Coordinate System. The Ecliptic Coordinate System The Ecliptic Coordinate System is a geocentric (i.e., Earth-centered) view of the Celestial Sphere.

The PLANISPHERE is an extremely useful tool for finding stars and 10 constellation in the sky, depicting not only what is currently in the sky but it also allows the 20 prediction of the rising and setting times of various celestial objects. 30 THE LAYOUT OF THE PLANISPHERE 40 50 The outer circumference of the dark blue circular disk (which is called the star wheel) you’ll notice that the wheel is divided into the 12 months, and that each month is divided into 60 individual dates. The star wheel rotates about the brass fastener, which represents the 70 North Celestial Pole. The frame of the planisphere has times along the outer edge. 80 Holding the planisphere on the southern corner you'll see "midnight" at the top. Moving Zenith counterclockwise, notice how the hours progress, through 1 AM, 2 AM, and so on through "noon" at the bottom. The hours then proceed through the afternoon and evening (1 PM, 2 PM, etc.) back toward midnight. Once you have the wheel set properly for the correct time and day, the displayed part represents what you see if you stand with the star and planet locator held directly over your head with the brass fastener toward the north. (Notice that the compass directions are also written on the corners of the frame.) Of course, you don't have to actually stand that way to make use of the Star and Planet Locator--this is just a description to help you understand what is displayed.

  • The Sundial Cities
The Sundial Cities Joel Van Cranenbroeck, Belgium Keywords: Engineering survey;Implementation of plans;Positioning;Spatial planning;Urban renewal; SUMMARY When observing in our modern cities the sun shade gliding along the large surfaces of buildings and towers, an observer can notice that after all the local time could be deduced from the position of the sun. The highest building in the world - the Burj Dubai - is de facto the largest sundial ever designed. The principles of sundials can be understood most easily from an ancient model of the Sun's motion. Science has established that the Earth rotates on its axis, and revolves in an elliptic orbit about the Sun; however, meticulous astronomical observations and physics experiments were required to establish this. For navigational and sundial purposes, it is an excellent approximation to assume that the Sun revolves around a stationary Earth on the celestial sphere, which rotates every 23 hours and 56 minutes about its celestial axis, the line connecting the celestial poles. Since the celestial axis is aligned with the axis about which the Earth rotates, its angle with the local horizontal equals the local geographical latitude. Unlike the fixed stars, the Sun changes its position on the celestial sphere, being at positive declination in summer, at negative declination in winter, and having exactly zero declination (i.e., being on the celestial equator) at the equinoxes. The path of the Sun on the celestial sphere is known as the ecliptic, which passes through the twelve constellations of the zodiac in the course of a year. This model of the Sun's motion helps to understand the principles of sundials.

  • THE PRELUDE to the ANTICHRIST the Purposes of This Illustration Is to Show What the Time Span of the Central Blood Moons from 2011 to 2018
THE PRELUDE TO THE ANTICHRIST The purposes of this illustration is to show what the time span of the Central Blood Moons from 2011 to 2018. These 2 total lunar eclipses are like a ‘bookend’ of a specific time. This time is approximately a 7 year span. What is unique about a Central Blood Moon is that the Moon passes the center of the shadow of the Earth. Another name for these lunar eclipses is called the Bull’s Eye. Other perspectives about these 2 peculiar that will be depicted on the chart is that the constellations will reversed to show the start of the June 15, 2011 Central Blood Moon first in the sign of Ophiuchus. The other Central Blood Moon will occur in July 17, 2018 in the sign of Capricorn. The June 2011 Central Blood Moon that occurs in Ophiuchus is right on the Ecliptic. The Blood Moon of July 2018 occurs approximately 9 degrees below the Ecliptic in Capricorn. What is unique about this timespan and juxtaposition of the 2 Blood Moons is that they are in phi ratio relationship to the sign of Sagittarius. In specific, the star in this sign is Kaus Sagittarius. As to its possible prophetic significance remains to be seen. One possible depiction is that the time from the Bull’s Eye bookend could be the sign of the rise of the AntiChrist. This is stipulated on the imagery of the duality not only of Sagittarius itself but the dichotomy of the notion of the Christs to come. The image of the AntiChrist according to the Bible is that he will be a man coming in the name of peace on a metaphorical white horse.

Mars Retrograde Motion 2/2/09 Astro 110-01 Lecture 7 3 A way around the problem • Plato had decreed that in the heavens only circular motion was possible. • So, astronomers concocted the scheme of having the planets move in circles, called epicycles, that were themselves centered on other circles, called deferents • If an observation of a planet did not quite fit the existing system of deferents and epicycles, another epicycle could be added to improve the accuracy • This ancient system of astronomy was codified by the Alexandrian Greek astronomer Ptolemy (A.D. 100–170), in a book translated into Arabic and called Almagest. • Almagest remained the principal textbook of astronomy for 1400 years until Copernicus 2/2/09 Astro 110-01 Lecture 7 4 So how does the Ptolemaic model explain retrograde motion? Planets really do go backward in this model.

  • 1 the Equatorial Coordinate System
General Astronomy (29:61) Fall 2013 Lecture 3 Notes , August 30, 2013 1 The Equatorial Coordinate System We can define a coordinate system fixed with respect to the stars. Just like we can specify the latitude and longitude of a place on Earth, we can specify the coordinates of a star relative to a coordinate system fixed with respect to the stars. Look at Figure 1.5 of the textbook for a definition of this coordinate system. The Equatorial Coordinate System is similar in concept to longitude and latitude. • Right Ascension ! longitude. The symbol for Right Ascension is α. The units of Right Ascension are hours, minutes, and seconds, just like time • Declination ! latitude. The symbol for Declination is δ. Declination = 0◦ cor- responds to the Celestial Equator, δ = 90◦ corresponds to the North Celestial Pole. Let's look at the Equatorial Coordinates of some objects you should have seen last night. • Arcturus: RA= 14h16m, Dec= +19◦110 (see Appendix A) • Vega: RA= 18h37m, Dec= +38◦470 (see Appendix A) • Venus: RA= 13h02m, Dec= −6◦370 • Saturn: RA= 14h21m, Dec= −11◦410 −! Hand out SC1 charts. Find these objects on them. Now find the constellation of Orion, and read off the Right Ascension and Decli- nation of the middle star in the belt. Next week in lab, you will have the chance to use the computer program Stellar- ium to display the sky and find coordinates of objects (stars, planets). 1.1 Further Remarks on the Equatorial Coordinate System The Equatorial Coordinate System is fundamentally established by the rotation axis of the Earth.

  • Positional Astronomy Coordinate Systems
Positional Astronomy Observational Astronomy 2019 Part 2 Prof. S.C. Trager Coordinate systems We need to know where the astronomical objects we want to study are located in order to study them! We need a system (well, many systems!) to describe the positions of astronomical objects. The Celestial Sphere First we need the concept of the celestial sphere. It would be nice if we knew the distance to every object we’re interested in — but we don’t. And it’s actually unnecessary in order to observe them! The Celestial Sphere Instead, we assume that all astronomical sources are infinitely far away and live on the surface of a sphere at infinite distance. This is the celestial sphere. If we define a coordinate system on this sphere, we know where to point! Furthermore, stars (and galaxies) move with respect to each other. The motion normal to the line of sight — i.e., on the celestial sphere — is called proper motion (which we’ll return to shortly) Astronomical coordinate systems A bit of terminology: great circle: a circle on the surface of a sphere intercepting a plane that intersects the origin of the sphere i.e., any circle on the surface of a sphere that divides that sphere into two equal hemispheres Horizon coordinates A natural coordinate system for an Earth- bound observer is the “horizon” or “Alt-Az” coordinate system The great circle of the horizon projected on the celestial sphere is the equator of this system. Horizon coordinates Altitude (or elevation) is the angle from the horizon up to our object — the zenith, the point directly above the observer, is at +90º Horizon coordinates We need another coordinate: define a great circle perpendicular to the equator (horizon) passing through the zenith and, for convenience, due north This line of constant longitude is called a meridian Horizon coordinates The azimuth is the angle measured along the horizon from north towards east to the great circle that intercepts our object (star) and the zenith.

  • Exercise 1.0 the CELESTIAL EQUATORIAL COORDINATE
Exercise 1.0 THE CELESTIAL EQUATORIAL COORDINATE SYSTEM Equipment needed: A celestial globe showing positions of bright stars. I. Introduction There are several different ways of representing the appearance of the sky or describing the locations of objects we see in the sky. One way is to imagine that every object in the sky is located on a very large and distant sphere called the celestial sphere . This imaginary sphere has its center at the center of the Earth. Since the radius of the Earth is very small compared to the radius of the celestial sphere, we can imagine that this sphere is also centered on any person or observer standing on the Earth's surface. Every celestial object (e.g., a star or planet) has a definite location in the sky with respect to some arbitrary reference point. Once defined, such a reference point can be used as the origin of a celestial coordinate system. There is an astronomically important point in the sky called the vernal equinox , which astronomers use as the origin of such a celestial coordinate system . The meaning and significance of the vernal equinox will be discussed later. In an analogous way, we represent the surface of the Earth by a globe or sphere. Locations on the geographic sphere are specified by the coordinates called longitude and latitude . The origin for this geographic coordinate system is the point where the Prime Meridian and the Geographic Equator intersect. This is a point located off the coast of west-central Africa. To specify a location on a sphere, the coordinates must be angles, since a sphere has a curved surface.
