23 Undulating Estate Framlands EP/Edit1/02.08.10 Undulating Ancient Farmlands Key Characteristics • Undulating arable landscape • Field pattern generally a random ancient pattern with occasional areas of regular fields associated with former mediaeval deer parks. • Oak, ash and field maple as hedgerow trees • Substantial open areas created for airfields and by post WWII agricultural improvement • Studded with blocks of ancient woodland • Dispersed settlement pattern of loosely clustered villages, hamlets and isolated farmsteads • Villages often associated with greens or former greens • Rich stock of mediaeval and Tudor timber-framed and brick buildings and moated sites • A large scale landscape with long undulating open views trees, either in hedges or in woods, are always a prominent feature • In the undulating landscape, crop production, especially oilseeds can be visually prominent Location This landscape type only occurs in one place, which is an area of clay ‘upland’ bordering the Stour and Glem rivers in south-west Suffolk. The area lies between Clare and Cowlinge in the west and Shimpling and Lawshall in the east, extending northwards as far as Chedburgh. Geology, landform and soils Depden, in the northern part of this area, at 128m OD, is the highest point in Suffolk. The elevated plateau of chalky clay till laid down by the Anglian glaciation is, however, much dissected by small valleys, giving a markedly undulating landscape with some quite steep slopes. The sloping land, combined with the high chalk content of the glacial till, has created a large area of clay soils of the Hanslope series that are good for arable farming, (in contrast to the more difficult to cultivate Beccles series found on the clay plateau of High Suffolk). -

Bunbury, Bart., on the nature of the Roman occupationat Icklingham,whichis printed in p. 250,washere read. The Secretarythen gavea brief explanationofthe SaxonrelicsexhibitedbyMr. Gwilt,and calledattention to•the fact thatZrelics of the Anglo-Saxonperiod had beenfoundin Icklingham,whileon the Hedth in the adjoiningparish of Stow,and near to the site of the Roman camp at Icklingham,Saxon antiquities alone are found ; leading to the belief that the two races were here in opposition to each other. The number of skeletons found, and the nature of the objects discoveredwith them,lie observed,shew that Stow Heath must havebeen for a considerabletimeused as a burialplace. The relicsconsistof urns rudely designed, andformedbyhandout ofblackearth; bossesofshields,andspearsofiron,&c.; bronze fibulteand clasps,with fragmentsof cloth adheringto them; and beads. Thelatter are numerous,and principallyof amber; but some are of glass,of variouscolours, and others of bakedearth painted. Some of a black colour have the zig-zagorna- ment in white. A fewof polishedwhitepebblehavealsobeenmet with, and oneof jet. A Debenham and Debnam Baptism Index This index contains pointers to baptism records of members of Debenham and Debnam families prior to July 1837. Most of the entries have not been substantiated by reference to the original registers or copies of the registers, and unless a specific date is shown should be considered an indication only of a likely baptism. It is certainly incomplete, and further entries will be added from time to time as they become available. It should be noted that spellings in the original register entries may vary quite widely. This is mainly because before the nineteenth century literacy was a scarce resource. The information has been drawn from a large number of sources, including original register entries or copies, researched pedigrees and much information gratefully received from other workers in the field. It is presented “as is”, with no guarantee of accuracy. I shall, as always, be very pleased to receive further information, both corrections and additions to the present list. To make the best use of space counties are shown using three-letter Chapman Codes, a genealogical standard widely used for the purpose. These codes are listed in a number of genealogical textbooks and are also available on the Internet on the Wikipedia, Rootsweb and Genuki sites, amongst others. This document is security protected. 1 Matter 16: Proposed site allocations- Medium Villages: KEN.M1 Relevant Policies- LP3, site allocations and relevant development management policies Issue 1: Kennett Garden Village (application reference 18/00752/ESO, June 2018) Kennett Action Group Hearing Statement This statement addresses all the questions to be raised. A. Summary 1.“The application is unsustainable (and) has been submitted ahead of an Inspector’s finding for East Cambs Local Plan. (Herringswell PC). “It is inappropriate to bring this application forward now when the 2018 submission Local Plan remains under examination by the Planning Inspectorate” (Campaign to Protect Rural England). Objections to the current application have included: Herringswell, Moulton, Kennett, and Kentford PCs, Newmarket Town Council, Suffolk and Cambridge CCs, Network Rail. 2. Only 20% of residents support the development. It is not “community led”. The number and detail of objections from the community (LP5) is much larger. The Kennett Action Group (KAG) petition “No to 500 Houses” was hand signed by 156 villagers, and delivered to ECDC. An additional online petition at change.org (“No to 500 houses in Kennett”) was organised by Kennett Action Group to facilitate signatures and the space for personal comments. This had 290 additional signatures, many with personal comments, and was delivered to ECDC. Principal concerns are based on the 4 times over expansion of the village and the large increase of already dangerous traffic. 3. Sustainable, lasting solutions to highways’ dangers and infrastructure have not been proposed by the applicant. The unmet infrastructure road requirements, include the increase in HGV traffic, dangers and bottlenecks at the Bell Inn, the A11, the school and the one-way railway bridge. -

267 RECORDS OF THE SUDBURY ARCHDEACONRY. BY VINCENT B. REDSTONE, H. TERRIERSAND SURVEYS. Constitutions and Canon,Ecclesiastical, issued in 1604, contain an injunction (No. 87), " that a T HEtrue note and terrier of all the glebe lands, &c., . and portions of tithes lying out of their parishes—which belong to any Parsonage, Vicarage, or rural Prebend. be taken by the view of honest men in every parish, by the appointnient of the Bishop—whereof the minister be one—and be laid up in the Bishop's Registry, there to be for a perpetual memory thereof." This injunction does not fix the frequency with which the terriers were to be procured by the Bishop, and, consequently, existing docu- ments of that• character are not to be found for any definite years or periods. It is evident by the existence of early terriers in .the keeping -of the Registrar for the Archdeacon of Sudbury, that such returns were made by churchwardens along .with their presentments• before the year 1604. The terriers at Bury St. Edmund's commence as early as 1576, whilst those in the Bishop's Registry at Norwich, date from 1627.. It is unknown from what circumstances the Archdeacons' Registrars became i)ossessed Of documents which the above mentioned canon dis- tinctly enjoins should be laid up in the Bishop's Registry.
