Richards ‘82 FALL 2016 - HIGHLIGHTS 01 Message from the PRESIDENT AMDG Dear Friends, Like the founding of the school in 1877 and its historical rededication to the City of Detroit in 1977, the opening of the Science and Engineering Center this year is a celebration of the remarkable and enduring spirit of U of D Jesuit. It is, I believe, the Spirit of the Lord. And, it is why I say with easy conviction, “The Kingdom of God is here.” Since July, I have been with many groups of people: Alumni Golf Outing, Mothers’ Club, Dads’ Club, Alumni Mothers’ Club, New Parents, Auction parties, Board of Directors, Friends and Benefactors, Alumni, Faculty and Staff, prospective students and parents, football games, soccer games, tennis matches, Student Senate, and just hanging out. I’m exhausted! Just kidding. It is energizing. In all these groups the Spirit is alive in a common dedication to forming our students to become Men for Others to the Greater Glory of God. It is a privilege to be with you and be part of this 140-year tradition. Thank you for welcoming me. Of course, the best group to be with is the students. My top three moments with them to date: 1) Giving the students permission to take their jackets off at the Mass of the Holy Spirit. 2) Bringing twenty pizzas to the football team during one of their study halls. 3) Listening to our Student Senate officers answering questions of prospective new parents. They were poised and well spoken. The Spirit clearly dwells within them. Let us continue together to build the Kingdom here. My prayers are ever with you. Go Cubs! THEODORE G. MUNZ, S.J. President MISSION STATEMENT University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy is committed to providing the highest quality of Jesuit college preparatory education to young men in southeast Michigan. U of D Jesuit, in collaboration with parents, will challenge its students to go beyond academic excellence, to be reflective, to be committed to the service of personal faith and the promotion of justice: to be “Men for Others.” 022 FALL 2016 - HIGHLIGHTS DEVELOPMENT AMDG Dear Friends, The new Science and Engineering Center opened on August 22nd, the first day of the new academic year! The center was completed on schedule and within its original budget. The excitement of the alumni, students, parents, and faculty touring the center has been palpable. Some of the comments heard are as follows: “It is so big.” “Spectacular” “The architecture and sandstone match well, you cannot easily tell which building was constructed in 1930 and which in 2016.” “I am inspired by the display of faith quotes and iconography in the halls; even a quote from one of our alumni, Guy Consolmagno, S.J. ’70. “The stained-glass window is stunning bringing together faith and science.” “Every time I look at the stained-glass window, I see something new.” “The center is a definitive statement on the importance of academic excellence at The High.” “The new center makes me very proud to be an alumnus and a member of the U of D Jesuit family.” We invite you to stop by and tour the new center. Call Tom Totte ’74 at (313) 927-2347, I would enjoy showing you around. Also, please share with me your comments on the new center and anything else at [email protected]. Follows are the most frequently asked questions about making a gift to The High. Q. When can I make my gift to the new Science and Engineering Center? A. Now. If you wish to make a gift or multi-year pledge, please contact Tom Totte ‘74 at (313) 927-2347, or Katie Sznewajs (313) 927-2325. We hope that 100% of the alumni, parents of current students and graduates, and friends will make a gift and participate in this exciting and visionary project. Q. What gift amount is necessary to have our name on the permanent benefactor recognition wall in the new Science and Engineering Center? A. Your name will be seen by future generations with a gift of a $1,000.00 or more. Q. When does the fundraising campaign conclude for the new Center? A. We will be accepting gifts and multi-year pledge through December 31, 2016. Of course, your pledges may be paid subsequent to December 31, 2016 on the timeline you decide. Q. Can I designate my gift to a specific purpose of interest to me? A. Yes. Gifts designated to the greatest needs of the school are preferred by us. If there are causes important to you such as Jesuit and Catholic Identity Formation, Black Awareness Society for Education (BASE) activities, athletics, faculty professional development, fine arts, eco-car, or robotics to name a just few, please let us know your interest when you make your gift. Q. What is the School’s greatest annual fundraising need? A. Tuition assistance. For the current academic year, more than 300 students received assistance totaling about $2 million. Q.
