Preface A transparent and accountable system of Governance can be met to a large extent with the availability of reliable statistics. Department of Economics & Statistics has taken various steps and make continuous efforts to improve statistical system in the State to meet the increasing needs of diverse users. Panchayat Level Statistics is one of the initiatives in this line. In this publication, the available data at Grama Panchayat level compiled at district and published in every five year interval to enable data for micro level planning. We have already released three publications in this series in 1996, 2001 and 2006 respectively. This Publication ‘Panchayat Level Statistics-2011’ Kollam District is the fourth publication in this series. A team of officers in the Taluk Statistical Offices and District Statistical Office of Kollam District under the supervision of Sri. Z. Quilon, an old Seaport on the Arabian coast. The word Quilon is an anglicized form of the Malayalam word Kollam. With the integration of Travancore and Cochin states on the 1st July 1949 Quilon become one of the three Revenue Divisions in the State. These three Revenue Divisions were later on converted in to three Districts. In 1990 the name of the District and its head quarter town had been changed to Malayalam version Kollam. 2. Kollam District has a total area of about 2491 sq. Km, which is about 6.4 per cent of the total area of the State. According to the area the District ranked 8th position in the State. 3. The District is situated on the South west coast of India between the north latitudes 90 10’ and 80 45’ and the east longitudes 76 025’ and 77 015’. The District is bordering on the north by Mavelikkara taluk of Alappuzha District, north east by Adoor and Kozhenchery taluk of Pathanamthitta District, east Thirunelveli District of Tamilnadu, south nedumangad and Chirayinkeezh taluk of Thiruvananthapuram District and on the west Lakshadweep Sea. 4. Kollam district is rich in water resources. Pamba, Achancovil, Kallada and Ithikara River are the major rivers flowing through the District. Sasthamkotta Lake, the only major fresh water lake in the State, is in the District. Ashtamudi Lake, Paravoor Kayal, Edava and Nadavayal Kayal are also in the water resources map of the District. 5. Total length of sea coast in the District is about 37 km. Kollam Thankassery and Neendakara are the two ports in the District. Neendakara is one among the three Intermediate Port in the State and Thankassery port is one among the 14 Minor Ports in the State. 6. Total population in the District is 2635375 which is about 7.89 percentage of the State population. Decadal Growth rate of population (2001-2011) in the District is 1.72 against 4.86 in the State. Rural population in the District is about 54.95 percentage of total population and percentage of urban population is 45.05. Population density per sq. Km is 1056 in the District which ranked 6th position in the State. Proportion of child population in the age group 0-6 to total population was 11.32 in 2001 which comes down to 9.05 in 2011. 7. According to census 2011 data, Kollam district ranked 8th position in the order of Literacy rate in the State. Literacy rate in the District is 93.77 which are below the State average. Male literacy rate in the District is recorded as 95.83 and Female Literacy rate is 91.95.
