ROBERT CARABAS

My parents were Greek immigrants; my father was a barber who died when I was seven. I understand what it means to take any job, be poorly paid and struggle to imagine a hopeful future. A union job on the Great Northern Railway made college possible. I graduated from UC Berkeley and became an oil company credit manager. I understand the good and harm that money can do.

I am aware of hard work and low pay. For 35 years the lowest paid American workers haven’t gotten a raise, their wages haven’t grown with the economy, withholding $15,000 a year. That money can’t be spent in our communities and we are poorer for it. Our well-being depends upon a common economic foundation of living wages. It’s time to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour.

I hate seeing money wasted. Other industrial nations provide healthcare to all their citizens and get better results at half the cost. An American middle class family of four wastes $8,000 a year on healthcare, enough to educate their family or buy a home. Let’s get a California single payer healthcare system.

With five grandchildren, I bristle at global warming denial that has resulted in progressively less water. Today, 13 million dead pines; another 120 million are at risk. To dispose of those trees at $1,000 each would cost $13 billion, the price of political inaction. Those trees represent the threat of catastrophic wildfire. If we don’t confront global warming it confronts us. robertcarabas.com

In 2015 I was recognized by Assemblyman Frank Bigelow as one of California’s “Women of the Year” for outstanding service and dedication to my community and the state. CONNIE WILLIAMS OCCUPATION: SONORA CITY COUNCILWOMEN

We live in a wonderful city still going through difficult times as the economy continues to slowly recover. I want to be part of the process to work with my fellow Councilmembers on solutions that will continue to make this city a better place for our residents and visitors.

We can do better creating a safe, beautiful and sound community where business’ and jobs can thrive, where fiscal health is achieved by budget management with continued cost reductions and by finding additional means of growing income. We can do better in our collaboration with Tuolumne County creating greater efficiencies and less waste from overlapping services. We can do better by continuing to maintain and update the city infrastructure including roads and state-of-the- art communications. We can do better promoting Sonora as a tourist destination. We can do better working with economic development, our schools and Columbia College to support alternative career educational and business programs and opportunities.

Sonora’s future depends on forward thinking.

Since elected in 2012, I have worked tirelessly to make informed and conscientious decisions that benefit everyone.

I am asking for your vote to re-elect me to the Sonora City Council for another 4 year term.
