16 JULY 2016 JUNCTION 15 JUNCTION 15 JULY 2016 17 THE ALTERNATIVE BIRTHSTONE FOR JULY — words LESLEY BYTHEWAY

Gemstone of the Month – Carnelian

The alternative birthstone for July is the carnelian. Carnelian is a variety of red chalcedony which can vary in colour from pale orange to a reddish brown; the stone can also be translucent. Carnelian was also the birthstone for July in the old Arabic calendar.

The name carnelian is taken from the Latin ‘carnis’, meaning flesh, because of its colour. Sources of this stone can be found in India, USA, UK, Australia, Brazil and Russia. Health wise the carnelian can be beneficial for infertility, anger, the heart, circulation, lower back problems, kidneys, headaches and can speed up the healing in bones and ligaments. It is also thought that it can help with the treatment of ME and eating disorders such as anorexia. This stone is possibly one of the oldest known gemstones, as artifacts have been found on the island of Crete in Greece. It is believed that the carnelian has magical and metaphysical properties which made it a popular stone to wear as a talisman, especially by public officials and warriors in battle. It is also thought that this stone can enhance courage and stimulate optimism, so banishing any negativity. The carnelian is also believed to fuel passion, desire and confidence, so would be a good stone for shy people to have. It is also believed that public officials in Rome and Egypt wore carnelian for their seal ring, as it was deemed a strong red stone that aided people to speak boldly and with eloquence. The carnelian was once thought to be strictly worn or used by the noble classes, and those from a high social standing were often buried with this stone, as it was believed that the stone offered protection in the afterlife and kept evil spirits at bay. JUNCTION 15 JULY 2016 29 GARDENING ❀ Seed and care for these charming, heirloom favourites and they’ll fill with pastel blooms growing up to nine feet.

Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade Maturity: 365 days or more from seed to flower Height: 4 to 9 feet Spacing: 18 to 36 inches apart in all directions

Gardeners enjoy growing hollyhocks in borders or against walls and fences where their spectacular flowers stand tall above all else. The classic variety (Alcea rosea) has graced outbuildings and cottages for more than a century. Very attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds. Showy blooms completely cover 4 to 9 foot stalks. Hollyhocks are considered a biennial, that is, they grow foliage the first year and flower, form seeds and die the next. Plants easily self-seed to provide an endless supply of blossoms.

Site Preparation: Hollyhocks will thrive in full sun to partial shade and rich, moist soil. Prior to planting work plenty of organic matter, such as compost or aged animal manure, into the garden. This helps condition the soil, which improves drainage and increases its ability to hold water and nutrients.

How to Plant: Sow hollyhock seeds outdoors just beneath the surface of the soil 1-2 weeks before last frost. Seeds will germinate in 10-14 days. Thin to 18-36 inches apart after seedlings have sprouted. Water as needed during dry conditions to keep flowers blooming. Adding an organic flower fertilizer every few weeks will result in bigger, bolder blooms. When flowers fade, cut stalks to the ground.

Insects and Disease: Hollyhocks Hollyhocks are vulnerable to a number of garden pests including thrips, Japanese beetles, sawflies and spider mites. Watch closely, and if problems exist treat with organic pesticides for immediate control. Foliage is susceptible to fungal diseases, such as anthracnose, rust and powdery mildew, which can disfigure the leaves under severe infestations.

Hollyhocks will cross-pollinate. Gardeners should only grow one variety at a time to save pure seed, or isolate varieties by ¼ mile. Seeds are ready to harvest when the seed capsules are completely dry and brown. The capsules can then be picked and the seeds

Unit 18A, Radway Green 01270 879379 Venture Park, Alsager www.m6beds.co.uk Cheshire CW2 5PR Kids’ Page BLOWKids FOOTBALL Quiz to do Age: 4+

This is a very simple game for two or four players suitable for children as young as 4. You can set it up anywhere and it should keep the kids amused for a while!

You Will Need: A ball. The best type of ball depends on the surface of the pitch. If you’re playing on a carpet, a light plastic ball like a Subbuteo football or a perhaps a table tennis ball is ideal; if you’re using a smooth surface like a table, you can use a heavier/rougher ball (even a dried pea!) Two goals (margarine tubs are good). A large drinking straw for each player

Rules: Place a border round the pitch (books might be suitable) to stop the ball going outside the field of play. Then put the ball in the middle of the pitch and blow. If you get the ball in the opponents goal you have scored. First to five goals wins. The only rule is that you’re not allowed to touch the ball while it is in play - with hand, straw or anything else. If you do, the opponent gets a penalty.

Penalty shots: The offending player (or team if playing two-a-side) has to put down his straw, the ball goes on the middle of the pitch and the other team gets the chance to score unopposed. The offending team are not allowed to touch their straws to pick them up and defend until the other team has restarted.

10% OFF DURING THE EUROS WITH THIS ADVERT ~ Histories and Mysteries ~ John Currie One of the most promising artists of the 20th Century, John Currie, was born in Chesterton in 1883. Few people would recognise his name as his artistic career and his life were cut short and he died tragically, aged just 31.

Currie attended art school in both Newcastle soon over as, in 1911, Jessie discovered John and Hanley, eventually painting ceramics for was having an affair and shortly afterwards he both the Royal Doulton and Minton pottery abandoned his wife and small child to live with factories. his mistress in London. Their marriage was second portrait. They were known to have had a very passionate, heated and sometimes violent relationship. Their relationship was so destructive that, on 8 October, 1914, John shot Dolly, before turning the gun on himself. He died in hospital from his wounds. It was a tragic end to a great talent and promising career.

The Brampton Museum has two works created by Currie, shown with this article. Although, in my opinion, his real talent lay in creating oil paintings, particularly portraits. You can view more of his artwork on the Art UK website : www.artuk.org (more of the Museum’s oil paintings can be found on their too).
