We are willfully committed to serve patiently, resourcefully and work transparently with the active participation, cooperation and support of responsive, loyal citizenry of Barangay Tinongdan in coordination and partnership with Government Agencies and Non-government Agencies of all sectors in the effective implementation of developed programs and projects.

I. GENERAL INFORMATION

Origin of Barangay Name. Long time ago, there lived in the community a person named Ching. He was very popular to the people because of his hospitality and kindness. Many people even from distant places loved to visit him at his place.

Whenever travelers pass by and the people ask their destination, the reply of the travelers would always be tus-Ching, an Ibaloi phrase which means ‘to visit Ching’. From then on, the community people knew every traveler was going to Ching’s place. Soon the place became known to be called ‘Tu-Ching’. The name was changed later on and was pronounced as Tuding, which up to now is still the name of the locality.

Early Settlers. The following table contains the names of the families which are known to be the first settlers in the area. It also shows the order of entry of the different ethnic groups into the barangay.

Creation of the Barangay. Barangay Tuding was created on November 22, 1900.

Legal Basis of Creation. Creation of eight (8) barrios under the Act No. 1876 dated August 18, 1948; Tuding, Ampucao, Dalupirip, Gumatdang, Loacan, , Tinongdan, and Virac.

Location. Barangay Tuding is located at northwest part of Itogon. It is bounded by Barangay Loacan to the north, Barangay Gumatdang to the south, Barangay Loacan to the east and the city of to the west.

The municipal hall is located 18 kilometers away from the barangay. The Provincial Capitol in La Trinidad is 14 kilometers away while the city of Baguio is 8 kilometers away with the barangay hall as the reference point.

BARANGAY PROFILES 2019 – ITOGON Election Data. After the elections held on October 19, 2007, it was evident that more than half of the voting population exercised their right to suffrage. Out of the 3,444 who registered, 66.46% or 2,289 actually voted from the 17 different clustered precints.

II. DEMOGRAPHIC PROFILE

A. Population Population by Age Group and Sex. The table below contains the population distribution of Barangay Tuding according to age group and sex.

Out of the total population of 9,676 that was recorded in 2018, 52.05% were males and 47.94% were females.

Population Density. It refers to the ratio of the number of persons per hectare or per square kilometer. It is an index of geographical distribution computed by dividing the total number of population by estimated land area of a given geographical unit or political entity. The population density of the barangay in 2018 was 19.49 which mean there were 20 persons per hectare.

B. Number of Households Barangay Tuding have a total of 5,560 households in 2019. The average household size is four. It can be computed by dividing the total population by the total number of household.

C. Dialect Spoken The dialects mainly used by the residents are the Ibaloi and Kankana-ey. There are also people who make use of other dialects such as Ilocano. Meanwhile, the Filipino (Tagalog) and the English languages are used secondarily especially in public and institutional places.

D. Livelihood Business or trading is one of the major sources of livelihood for the residents of Barangay Tuding. It is probably due to the fact that the barangay is located near the city of Baguio. Some are also laborers.

II. NATURAL/PHYSICAL PROFILE

A. Land Area and Land Use Barangay Tuding is the smallest in the municipality of Itogon in terms of area. It has a total land area of 501.10 hectares which is 1% of the total lire of the municipality.

The existing land area of Tuding is classified according to its issues. These are detailed in the following table.

B. Topography and Slope The barangay is generally nearly level or flat which are utilized as agricultural lands and settlement areas.

Soil Type The soil type of Barangay Tuding is classified as Bakakeng sandy clay loam.

D. Climate The climate characterized by two distinct seasonal patterns, the wet and the dry. The wet season is experienced from May to October and the dry season for the rest of the year.

III. ECONOMIC PROFILE

A. Agricultural Production Crop Production. Seventy three farmers grow Baguio Beans, flowering pechay, eggplant, pigeon pea, tomato and root crops seasonal. Due to limited farm lot, farmers can only produce little volume of products which they deliver to the vegetable trading post in Baguio.

In the interview conducted, 172 respondents (100%) claimed to have planted fruit bearing trees such as banana, jackfruit, mango, citrus and avocado, among others to their agro-forestry plantation, backyard and kaingin farms. It was also observed that almost all houses have fruit bearing trees near their houses. They have also grown camote (sweet potato), gabi, cassava and peanut at their uma (cropland) purposely for home consumption and food for their animals. However, they bring to the market the excess of these root crops that the family cannot consume. (Source: Barangay Profile of Tuding, 2004)

Poultry and Livestock Production. Livestock raised in the barangay are mostly dogs, cattle and swine. Chicken and ducks are the main poultry raised in the locality commonly of native breeds and raised in the backyard farming scale.

B. Trade and Industry Mining. Itogon, being host to the country’s premier gold mining companies, is classified by national classification as a first class municipality.

Mining remains as the top economic earner despite the closure of big mining companies in the past decade. The recent surge of the price of gold has revived the mining industry. Small-scale mining operations currently prevail over the abandoned quarries of the big companies that have earlier ceased operations.

Small scale mining does not contribute directly to the municipal treasury through existing taxation instruments. However, it provides widespread employment and precipitates secondary economic derivatives that emanate from the capital dynamics of the gold enterprise. A. Agricultural Facilities and Support Infrastructure

Public Market. No public market is found in the barangay but there exist a talipapa. Basic needs are bought at the city of Baguio.

Rice Mill, Potato Seed Storage House and Greenhouses. There are no rice mills or potato seed storage houses in the barangay. However, there are five greenhouses found in the locality and these are all privately owned. (Source: MAO, Itogon 2009)

Irrigation System. Only two irrigation systems are present in the locality according to the National Irrigation Administration or NIA. The following table contains the list of the irrigation systems present in the barangay together with its service area and number of farmer beneficiaries.

B. Transport Infrastructure and Transportation Facilities Roads. There are 11 existing barangay roads in the locality as per Municipal Planning and Development Office (MPDO) recent records. Aside from the barangay roads, one provincial road and three national roads also traverse parts of the barangay.

Barangay Tuding is accessible to any types of vehicles and majority of the transport services being used are motorized and have regular trips. The main transport facilities used by the residents are the public utility jeepneys (PUJs), but taxi cabs and tricycle are also an alternative.

D. Communication Facilities Communication services such as telephone, postal and telegram services can be availed in Baguio City, which is eight kilometers away from the barangay hall. However, almost all household in the barangay have a cellular phone which is used to communicate to others even in distant places.

Media Facilities. The residents mostly acquire information or news through the television and/or radio. The barangay can receive at least two channels. In addition, some of the residents also have a personal computer connected with internet which is one means to obtain information.

Sports and Recreation Facilities. The table below contains the sports and recreation facilities found in the barangay. The gymnasium is located near the barangay hall and likely located in public and private schoolgrounds, the baseball field, playgrounds and the basketball courts are mostly located in the public school grounds. Other recreational facilities like videoke bars and billiard tables are also present in the barangay.

E. Power Supply Sources of Lighting Fuel. Almost all of the households in the barangay make use of electricity as their power source. Households located near the roads are mostly the ones that have access to electricity. The rest make use of kerosene or LPG, candles, or wood as their lighting facility.

Sources of Cooking Fuel. The following are the sources of cooking fuel used by the residents of the barangay. Almost all of the households in the area make use of LPG to cook their food. The rest make use of electricity and biogas.

V. SOCIO-CULTURAL PROFILE A. Health Leading Causes of Morbidity. The table shows the leading causes of morbidity in the barangay for the year 2019. Illnesses due to respiratory infections are the top causes why residents seek medical assistance at the Barangay Health Station. Most of the affected individuals are children and the elderly.

Live Births and Infant Mortality. No cases of infant death were recorded by the Barangay Health Station for the year 2019. The following table contains the number of live births recorded by the Barangay Midwife.

Health Facilities and Manpower. The only hospital found in the municipality is located at Barangay Tinongdan, the Itogon Municipal Hospital (IMH). There is also the Municipal Health Office (MHO), located at Barangay Poblacion, where the doctor, nurses, dentist and sanitary inspector are stationed. The services they render are municipal wide.

Moreover, a Barangay Health Station is present, where a midwife is assigned. There are also five barangay health workers and two barangay nutrition scholars detailed in the community to monitor the health condition of the residents and provide the needed assistance.

Water Supply. All households of the barangay have access to water supply and most are benefiting from the water works constructed by the government. Most of the total number of households in the barangay has level III classification of water supply. In level III, a common faucet system coming from the water source is establishment near a cluster of households where these household can fetch water.

Toilet Facilities. The Rural Sanitary Inspector detailed at the Rural Health Unit is monitoring the compliance of all households to sanitary practices being promoted by all levels of governance like having sanitary toilet. Majority of the households in the barangay have sanitary toilets. Residents

BARANGAY PROFILES 2019 – ITOGON with unsanitary toilet must improve their toilet facility and make it sanitary for the comfort and safety of the users and their neighbors as well to prevent the occurrence of disease.

Garbage Disposal System. Most households in the barangay practice the garbage collection method as a way of disposing garbage which is maintained by the Barangay Local Government Unit and Municipal LGU. The residents should be encouraged to practice more of the sanitary methods like composting, segregation and recycling.

B. Education Day Care Centers. There are six Day Cere Centers (DCC) in the barangay being supervised by the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO). The table below contains the names of the day care centers and the number of enrollees for the school year 2018 to 2019.
