She specializes in South Asian literature written in English and in literary repre- sentations of British Muslims. Claire is currently on research leave, supported by a HEFCE Promising Researcher Fellowship, and is completing a book entitled British Muslim Fictions: Interviews with Contemporary Writers. She has published widely in such journals as Postcolonial Text, Journal of Commonwealth Literature and Journal of Postcolonial Writing. She is also working on a monograph tracing the development of artistic depictions of Muslims in Britain, 1966–2009. She has been a subject editor for the ‘Indian Subcontinent and Sri Lanka’ section of The Year’s Work in English Studies and a judge for the Muslim Writers Awards 2009, and is on the editorial board of The Journal of Commonwealth Literature. Dr Katharine Cockin is Reader in English at the University of Hull where she is the convenor of the MA in Modern and Contemporary Literature. Her research interests range from the nineteenth century to the present day. She has published widely on women’s writing, women’s suffrage literature and theatre, editing two volumes of women’s suffrage literature (Routledge 2007). Her articles include studies of Jackie Kay and contemporary fiction and she has edited two special issues of Critical Survey on contemporary fiction. She has published the biography of Edith Craig (Cassell 1998) and a monograph, Women and Theatre in the Age of Suffrage (Palgrave 2001). Her AHRC project, the Ellen Terry and Edith Craig Database is now online at http://www.ellenterryarchive.hull.ac.uk and she is currently editing The Collected Letters of Ellen Terry (Pickering and Chatto, 2010 onwards; 8 vols). She is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Gender Studies and a member of the Arts and Humanities Research Council’s Peer Review College. Dr Donna Cox is lecturer in English Literature at Grimsby Institute of Further and Higher Education where she is Programme Leader of the M.A. in Children’s Literature. Her research interests are primarily in the area of critical theory and psychoanalytical approaches to textuality and culture with a particular interest in positions of rhetoric inhabited in relation to analysis. Published articles have ranged from readings of the early work of Freud, linguistic negotiation in rap and 213 16:23:22:07:09 Page 213 Page 214 Notes on Contributors hip hop, and the role of phantasy in children’s literature. She is currently complet- ing a monograph on hysteria and critical analysis. Dr Katharine Cox is lecturer in Popular Culture and English at the University of Wales Institute Cardiff (UWIC). Her Ph.D. thesis examined the significance of the maze and labyrinth in contemporary fiction, connecting narrative complexity with early archaeological and literary examples. In September 2006 she organised and co-hosted the first conference dedicated to the work of Iain (M.) Banks, held at the University of Westminster, in conjunction with the UK Network for Modern Fiction Studies. Her teaching and research interests include children’s literature, detective fiction, the interrelation of architecture and space in contemporary fiction, and contemporary writing especially the fictions of Jeanette Winterson and Iain Banks. Dr Julie Ellam taught at undergraduate and masters level in English at the University of Hull for a number of years and is now employed as a freelance writer. She has had work published in a number of outlets including the Times Literary Supplement, Literature Online and the British Council Contemporary Writers’ website at www.contemporarywriters.com. She has also written book- length study guides on Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks for Advanced York Notes (Longman 2009) and on Atonement by Ian McEwan (Continuum 2009). Her research interests are mainly concerned with modern and contemporary fiction. Her Ph.D. thesis, ‘Representations of Love in Jeanette Winterson’s Novels’, is to be published (forthcoming, Rodopi). Dr Michael Greaney is senior lecturer at the University of Lancaster. He has taught on The Theory and Practice of Criticism, From Decadence to Modernism, Contemporary Fiction and Critical Theory, and Contemporary British Fiction. His research interests lie in modern/contemporary fiction and theory. His first book, Conrad, Language, and Narrative (Cambridge University Press, 2002), received the Joseph Conrad Society of America’s Adam Gillon Award for the most significant work in Conrad studies from 2001–4. Contemporary Fiction and the Uses of Theory (Palgrave, 2006) is a study of the reception and representation of theoretical ideas in literary fiction since the 1960s. His current research is on narratives of insomnia in contemporary fiction and film. Dr Sean Matthews is Lecturer in Modern and Contemporary Literature, and Director of the D.H. Lawrence Research Centre. He has published widely on cul- tural theory and twentieth century literature, and has taught on these topics in Britain, Japan, the US, and, for the British Council, in Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria. His Raymond Williams is forthcoming in the Routledge Critical Thinkers series (ed. Robert Eaglestone). His anthology of critical theory, Theories: A Reader, edited with Aura Sibisan of the University of Brasov, Romania, was published in 2003, and included his introductory essays and apparatus. He has recently dir- ected events on contemporary studies for the British Council; the CCUE Annual Conference; ESSE; and the Learning and Teaching Support Network, LTSN. He is a contributor to www.contemporarywriters.com, and reviews for a number of 214 16:23:22:07:09 Page 214 Page 215 Notes on Contributors newspapers and journals. He directed the 2007 D.H. Lawrence International Conference, ‘Return to Eastwood’, and co-curated the exhibition ‘Lawrence Among the Women’ at the Weston Gallery. Dr Jago Morrison is Senior Lecturer in English at Brunel University, with expert- ise in post-war and contemporary fiction. His published books are all current references in the field. Contemporary Fiction (Routledge, 2003) is a study of fiction since 1975, discussing key period themes and offering fresh readings of nine influential writers. Scandalous Fictions: The Twentieth Century Novel in the Public Sphere (Palgrave, 2006) is a collection of essays co-edited with Susan Watkins, which re-assesses the twentieth century novel as a form shaped by its problematic, often scandalous relationship to the public sphere. The Fiction of Chinua Achebe (Palgrave, 2007) is a guide to the complex field of Achebe studies. Jago regularly works as a reviewer for major academic journals and publishers and is a member of the Arts and Humanities Research Council’s Peer Review College. Jayne Murphy is a doctoral student in the School of Arts at Brunel University. Her main research interests are contemporary women’s fiction, historical fiction, gen- der and queer theory. Her first academic paper, on Sarah Waters’ The Nightwatch, was presented at Leeds University in 2007. Dr Ruvani Ranasinha is Senior Lecturer at King’s College London, the author of Hanif Kureishi: Writers and their Works Series (Northcote House in association with The British Council, 2002) and South Asian Writers in Twentieth-Century Britain: Culture in Translation (Oxford University Press, 2007). Ruvani specialises in post- colonial literature and theory, especially relating to South Asia and the South Asian diaspora. Her research interests are in post-1945 and contemporary fiction and film, particularly as they relate to immigration, gender and/or book history. At present, she is working on an AHRC-funded project Making Britain: South Asian Visions of Home and Abroad, 1870–1950 with Susheila Nasta, Open University and Elleke Boehmer, Oxford University, the British Library and the Courtauld Institute (2007–2010). She is also interested in the cultural representation of Muslim identity in the West. She is on the editorial board of Interventions: International Journal of Postcolonial Studies. Professor Patricia Waugh’s special interests are in twentieth-century literature, relations between modernism and postmodernism, women’s writing and feminist theory, utopianism, literary criticism and theory, and literature, philosophy and science. From the foregoing argument, it can be clearly agreed that, both David Campbell and Walker R.B.J. conceive the same view that, our political imagination restricts us from understanding our contemporary situation. Upon all, post structuralists consider interpretation and representation are indispensable and unavoidable when it comes to engaging both the domain of international politics and the field of international relations.

It is impossible to give a convincing defence of high culture to a person who has none. In the following book I shall therefore assume that you, the reader, are both intelligent and cultivated. You don’t have to be familiar with the entire canon of Western literature, the full range of musical and artistic masterpieces or the critical reections which all these things have prompted. Who is? But it would be useful to have read Les eurs du mal by Baudelaire and T.S. Eliot’s Waste Land. I shall also assume some familiarity with Mozart, Wagner, Manet, Poussin, Tennyson, Schoenberg, George Herbert, Goethe, Marx and Nietzsche. In Chapters 6 and 7 I offer criticisms of two important cultural gures – Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida. I have tried, though perhaps without success, to make these criticisms intelligible to people who have not read, and maybe do not intend to read, Foucault or Derrida. Culture, I suggest, has a religious root and a religious meaning. is does not mean that you have to be religious in order to be cultivated.

That Eliot did not allow After Strange Gods (1934) to be reprinted1 is well-known, and it is sometimes attributed to some change of mind. But two letters he wrote to Helen Gardner2 in the aftermath of the 1960 trial in London in which the publishers of Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover were acquitted of charges relating to obscenity, show that Eliot was then affirming convictions essentially similar to those set forth in the lectures at the University of Virginia in May 1933. Five years before his death he saw himself as engaged in the same struggle, his attitude towards Lawrence remained ‘ambiguous’, and the efforts of his own criticism were still against ‘evil’. It was not a response to the reception of After Strange Gods but a recognition that the lectures had been under-prepared, that made Eliot reluctant to reprint. While he was preparing the Virginia lectures for the press, as he was required to do by the terms of his engagement, he wrote to Paul Elmer More, who had taught him at Harvard and with whom he was on friendly terms: I have had to turn to the revision of my Virginia lectures which have to be published in the spring. Again, an unsatisfactory piece of work. A good subject, I think: fundamentally a criticism of the lack of moral criteria at bottom of course religious criteria in the criticism of modern literature.
