Screening-Reihe DAI Heidelberg, 13.10.–15.12.2014 Screening-Reihe DAI Heidelberg, 13.10.–15.12.2014 Einführungsmodul East Coast/West Coast: The American ‘Good’ Life Die Serien House of Lies (USA 2012–present, Matthew Carnahan, Showtime) und Californication (USA 2007–2014, Tom Kapinos, Showtime) bilden mit ihrer Verortung in New York bzw. „Gods of Dangerous Financial Instruments” (S01E01), House of Lies [25 min.] Beispielanalyse mit Präsentation zu Fachbegriffen aus den Bereichen Bild & Ton (Einstel- lungsgrößen, Kameraoperationen, Bildkomposition, Geräusche/Musik/Sprache, …) [30 min.] Pause „Pilot“ (S01E01), Californication [25 min.] Analyse in Kleingruppen [45 min.] ‚Next time on…‘: Abschluss und Ausblick [15 min.] Screening 8 Hill Street Blues (USA 1981–1987, Steven Bochco/Michael Kozoll, NBC) NYPD Blue (USA 1993–2005, Steven Bochco/David Milch, ABC) Screening 9 Miami Vice (USA 1984–1989, Anthony Yerkovich, NBC/USA Network) CSI: Miami (USA 2002–2012, Anthony E. Zuiker/Carol Mendelsohn/Ann Donahue, CBS) Screening 10 Person of Interest (USA 2011–present, Jonathan Nolan, CBS) Alternativen/Ausblick auf 2015/: Themenmodul 4 „Ambivalente Figuren“ Six Feet Under (USA 2001–2005, Alan Ball, HBO) The Wire (USA 2002–2008, David Simon, HBO) Breaking Bad (USA 2008–2013, Vince Gilligan, AMC) Themenmodul 5 „Innovative Dramaturgien“ Lost (USA 2004–2010, J.J. Abrams/Jeffrey Lieber/Damon Lindelof, ABC) Damages (USA 2007–2012, Todd A. Kessler/Glenn Kessler/Daniel Zelman, FX/Audience Net- work) 24 (USA 2004–2010/14, Robert Cochran/Joel Surnow, Fox) Themenmodul 6 „Transmedia Storytelling“ Twin Peaks (USA 1990–1991, Mark Frost/David Lynch, ABC) Heroes (USA 2006–2010/15, Tim Kring, NBC) Game of Thrones (USA 2011–present, David Benioff/D.B. Weiss, HBO) .

‘Perfect Fit’: Industrial Strategies, Textual Negotiations and Celebrity Culture in Fashion Television Helen Warner Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) University of East Anglia School of Film and Television Studies Submitted July 2010 ©This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that no quotation from the thesis, nor any information derived therefrom, may be published without the author's prior, written consent. Helen Warner P a g e | 2 ABSTRACT According to the head of the American Costume Designers‟ Guild, Deborah Nadoolman Landis, fashion is emphatically „not costume‟. However, if this is the case, how do we approach costume in a television show like Sex and the City (1998-2004), which we know (via press articles and various other extra-textual materials) to be comprised of designer clothes? Once onscreen, are the clothes in Sex and the City to be interpreted as „costume‟, rather than „fashion‟? To be sure, it is important to tease out precise definitions of key terms, but to position fashion as the antithesis of costume is reductive. Landis‟ claim is based on the assumption that the purpose of costume is to tell a story. She thereby neglects to acknowledge that the audience may read certain costumes as fashion - which exists in a framework of discourses that can be located beyond the text. This is particularly relevant with regard to contemporary US television which, according to press reports, has witnessed an emergence of „fashion programming‟ - fictional programming with a narrative focus on fashion.

No sé.

  • Media Culture: Cultural Studies, Identity and Politics Between The
Media Culture Media Culture develops methods and analyses of contemporary film, television, music, and other artifacts to discern their nature and effects. The book argues that media culture is now the dominant form of culture which socializes us and provides materials for identity in terms of both social reproduction and change. Through studies of Reagan and Rambo, horror films and youth films, rap music and African- American culture, Madonna, fashion, television news and entertainment, MTV, Beavis and Butt-Head, the Gulf War as cultural text, cyberpunk fiction and postmodern theory, Kellner provides a series of lively studies that both illuminate contemporary culture and provide methods of analysis and critique. Many people today talk about cultural studies, but Kellner actually does it, carrying through a unique mixture of theoretical analysis and concrete discussions of some of the most popular and influential forms of contemporary media culture. Criticizing social context, political struggle, and the system of cultural production, Kellner develops a multidimensional approach to cultural studies that broadens the field and opens it to a variety of disciplines. He also provides new approaches to the vexed question of the effects of culture and offers new perspectives for cultural studies. Anyone interested in the nature and effects of contemporary society and culture should read this book. Kellner argues that we are in a state of transition between the modern era and a new postmodern era and that media culture offers a privileged field of study and one that is vital if we are to grasp the full import of the changes currently shaking us.

I responded quite honestly: “High School Nettie wouldn’t have been surprised. She knew where we were heading.” She absolutely did. I have always been pretty sure I would end up with an advanced degree and I have always known what that would involve. The only question was one of how I was going to get here, but my favorite thing has always been watching television and movies. Once I learned that a job existed where I could watch television and, more or less, get paid for it, I threw myself wholeheartedly into pursuing that job. I get to watch television and talk to other people about it. That’s simply heaven for me. A lot of people helped me get here.

  • Miami Vice: Protecting White America in the 1980S’ in Television and New Media, Vol 10, No 2, 2009, Pp
(This article is a version of ‘Michael Mann’s Miami Vice: Protecting White America in the 1980s’ in Television and New Media, vol 10, no 2, 2009, pp. 195-215.) Michael Mann’s Miami Vice: Protecting White America in the 1980s Miami Vice ran for five seasons on NBC, from September 1984 to January 1990. However, the first two seasons, when Michael Mann was Executive Producer, are usually considered to be definitive. The later seasons were darker, more cynical, expressing more the mood of a country weighed down by the consequences of Ronald Reagan’s presidency—a soaring national debt coupled with an individualistic ‘greed is good’ mentality and a foreign policy that was increasingly mired in accusations of conspiracy. Certainly the first two seasons were the most popular with the show regularly featuring in the top ten most watched programs up to 1986, according to the Nielsen ratings. Miami Vice compared in popularity with the prime-time soap operas Dallas and Dynasty though regularly beaten by The Cosby Show. Vice was the top rating cop show. It was created by Anthony Yerkovich who had worked on the gritty, New York-based Hill Street Blues. In this article I will argue that Mann’s own worldview, as it can be extrapolated from his films, is central to the conservative vision of Miami Vice. As we shall see, in Mann’s films there is an understanding of the role of law as foundational to the organisation of society. Living outside the law means living in a different world, a world where social institutions such as the family cannot exist.

Forster (Japan Women's University) This study investigates the ways in which the Netflix Narcos television series reinforces negative images of Latinos as dangerous drug dealers who threaten the safety and sanctity of U.S. citizens. It also explores how it both reflects and supports President Trump's politics of fear that not only got him elected, but has broadened and strengthened his support from conservatives since. An in-depth exploration of selected scenes from episodes of three Netflix series: Narcos, Narcos: Mexico, and El Chapo offers evidence of why such programs have become so popular for American viewers and continue to propagate Donald Trump's political pulpit of fear of illegal immigrants coming across the border to destroy conservative white America's way of life. Based on the analysis of these three series, it becomes clear that their popularity can perhaps be traced to Donald Trump's unexpected 2016 presidential win and his manipulative, and so far effective, use of politics of fear. In this context, the Netflix series mocks US law and journalism, which supports Trump's political agenda even further.
