Con el objetivo de evaluar las diferencias en la dinámica de cambio de uso de suelo en las dos zonas núcleo con relación a la zona de amortiguamiento de la Reserva de la Biosfera Pantanos de Centla, Tabasco, se cuantificaron los cambios registrados de 1990 al 2000 de los tipos de vegetación y usos del suelo utilizando un sistema de información geográfica. Apoyados en información georeferenciada en campo se procesaron imágenes de satélite de los sensores Landsat MSS y Landsat ETM para producir mapas de vegetación y uso del suelo para cada año evaluado. Se calcularon las tasas de cambio para cada tipo de vegetación y uso del suelo en cada una de las zonas de manejo. No se encontraron diferencias significativas en la dinámica de cambio de uso del suelo entre las zonas núcleo y la zona de amortiguamiento. Las selvas de puckté (Bucida buceras) y selva de tinto (Haematoxylum campechianum) presentaron tasas de cambio negativas en todas las zonas de manejo. Las comunidades de hidrófitas en la zona núcleo I y el manglar en la zona núcleo II también mostraron tasas negativas. En las clases restantes se presentó un incremento anual de superficie, entre ellas predominó el incremento de las áreas de pastizales. Los cambios encontrados en las zonas núcleo pueden ser resultado de la presencia de canales, caminos, poblados, así como de la expansión agrícola-ganadera, los incendios y la actividad petrolera. The changes recorded from 1990 to 2000 in the type of vegetation and land use were quantified using a geographic information system, in order to evaluate the differences in the dynamics of land-use change in the two core areas with respect to the buffer zone of the Pantanos de Centla Biosphere Reserve, Tabasco. Landsat MSS and ETM satelite images were processed to produce vegetation and land-use maps for each evaluated year using georeferenced information collected in the field. The rate of change for each land-use and type of vegetation in each management area was calculated. No significant differences were found for the dynamics of land-use change between the core areas and the buffer zone. The tropical forest associations of Bucida buceras (puckteal) and Haematoxylum campechianum (tintal) decreased in area in all the management zones. The wetland vegetation communities in core area I and the mangrove forest in core area II also presented negative rates. The other land cover categories presented an annual increase in area, particularly the areas with pasture land. The changes observed in the core areas may be the result of the presence of canals, roads and towns, as well as of the expansion of pastures and agricultural areas, fires and oil extraction activities. Contreras Sánchez (Universidad Juárez Autónoma de Tabasco) Important Mexican Mangrove Carbon Stocks The mangroves of southeastern Mexico’s Pantanos de Centla— the largest wetland in Mesoamerica—contain exceptionally large carbon stocks, which are among the largest of any man- grove ecosystem on Earth and among the largest of any tropical ecosystem. Clearing mangroves so that the land or shoreline can serve other uses thus comes at a high cost, because the replace- ment use may not store nearly as much carbon or in fact may allow stored carbon to be lost through greenhouse gas emissions, and it may also fail to provide other important ecosystem ser- vices that are characteristic of mangrove forests. Research has been conducted to assess carbon stocks in these ecosystems and, in particular, the differences in carbon storage between mangroves along the coastal fringe and estuarine man- groves. The project also examined the carbon stocks of cattle pastures that were established on sites previously occupied by mangrove forests, including the potential emissions that could arise from conversion of mangroves to cattle pastures. Results indicate that mangrove carbon stocks in the Pantanos de Centla are exceedingly high compared to those of the upland forests of Mexico and, moreover, that significant emissions result from the Sabalo estuarine mangrove forest, Pantanos de Centla.

It is the fourteenth largest country in the world in terms of total surface, but ranks third in biological diversity (Mittermeier 1988). Because of its topography and cli- mate regions which include a Nearctic realm in the north and a Neotropical realm in the south, Mexico hosts a wide variety of species in both flora and fauna (Rzedowski 1 1981). Overview: The state of Tabasco, in southeastern Mexico, covers 2,466,700 hectares of which 61 per cent are used for economic activities and 39 per cent are covered by tropical forest or aquatic vegetation. Tabasco, on the largest coastal alluvial plains in Mexico, is only one section of the humid and tropical coast in southeastern Mexico along the extreme southern part of the Gulf of Mexico. This state has the largest area of wetland (floodable areas) in the country. These characteristics give rise to a large diversity of fauna and flora, making it one of the most representative ecosystems of the biosphere (López-Hernández and Pérez, 1993). The municipality of Centla is part of this area of rivers. It covers 324,500 hectares, 12.2 per cent of the total area of the state. In the north, it is bordered by the Gulf of Mexico; to the east by the municipalities of Jonuta and Macuspana and the state of Campeche; to the south by the municipalities of El Centro; and to the west by Paraíso and Nacajuca (López-Hernández and Pérez, 1993). The Pantanos de Centla are found on the Holocene alluvial plain in the delta of the Grijalva-Usumacinta rivers. They cover an area of 302,706 hectares in the municipalities of Centla, Jonuta and Macuspana as well as a small part of the state of Campeche (López-Hernández and Pérez, 1993) (see map no.
