  • Gold in the Beach Placer Sands of Chavakkad-Ponnani, Kerala Coast, India
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by eprints@NML JOURNAL GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF INDIA Vol.78, October 2011, pp.345-348 Gold in the Beach Placer Sands of Chavakkad-Ponnani, Kerala Coast, India BIBHURANJAN NAYAK Mineral Processing Division, National Metallurgical Laboratory (CSIR), Jamshedpur – 831 007 Email: [email protected] Abstract: Although sporadic mining of placer gold from river beds is not uncommon in India, there is no documented literature on the occurrence of gold in the beach placer sand deposits of the country. While characterizing the heavy minerals of the Chavakkad-Ponnani (CP) beach placer sands along the North Kerala coast, the association of gold with the pyriboles in these sands has been observed. A native gold grain of about 25 µm was seen to occur as an inclusion within an amphibole of hornblendic composition. The pyriboles of the CP deposit are angular to sub-angular indicating a nearby provenance that may be in the upstream reaches of the Ponnani River in the districts of Malappuram and Palakkad or further north in the auriferous tracts of the Wynad-Nilambur or Attapadi regions. It is argued that the occurrence of native gold in CP deposit is not a freak occurrence and that it warrants thorough investigation of all the pyribole-ilmenite-rich placers to examine the possible presence of gold and its abundance in the beach placers of northern Kerala coast. Keywords: Beach sands, Placer deposits, Gold, Kerala. INTRODUCTION various heavy minerals associated with the CP deposit is Gold occurs in India in diverse geological settings.

  • Impact of the Proposed Cargo Port on the Traffic Characteristics of Ponnani Town and Abatement Measures
ISSN (Online) : 2319 - 8753 ISSN (Print) : 2347 - 6710 International Journal of Innovative Research in Science, Engineering and Technology An ISO 3297: 2007 Certified Organization, Volume 2, Special Issue 1, December 2013 Proceedings of International Conference on Energy and Environment-2013 (ICEE 2013) On 12th to 14th December Organized by Department of Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology, Kottayam, Kerala, India IMPACT OF THE PROPOSED CARGO PORT ON THE TRAFFIC CHARACTERISTICS OF PONNANI TOWN AND ABATEMENT MEASURES Irshad C. K., Gymmy Joseph Kattoor, Abdul Malik K.V. MTech Scholar, RIT Kottayam, Kerala India Professor, RIT Kottayam, Kerala India District Town Planner Malappuram, Kerala India ABSTRACT Traffic impact assessment is a powerful tool for engineers to determine the possible impacts of a project on the traffic and transportation infrastructure and to identify the road way improvements required to ensure that the road network will operate safely and efficiently for upcoming years. This study examines the impact that a cargo port at Ponnani would have on roadway travel and transportation infrastructure, both today and in the future, throughout the region and recommend abatement measures. The study will use a spread sheet based model to determine the number of road vehicles especially cargo trucks that would be added to the existing traffic flows as a result of the proposed cargo port. The assessment will be focused on the daily and peak hour traffic associated with the project after it will be commissioned on 2017. Specific travel demand forecasts for the Ponnani town would be assessed both for the existing traffic situation and for the traffic attracted due to the initiation of the cargo port.

  • Livable Cities India Final Narrative Report April 2018
Livable Cities Program INDIA FINAL NARRATIVE REPORT April 2017- March 2018 prepared by ESAF India April 2018 Annual Report, India 2017 - 2018 Name of the project: Livable Cities program Name of the partner: ESAF India Period : April 2017- March 2018 Narrative Summary Be it for a stroll in the neighbourhood or for the daily commute, having adequate built environment facilities encourages people to be physically active and choose to be healthy. Insufficient physical activities are one of the leading risk factors for death worldwide and for Non Communicable Diseases such as Cardio Vascular, diabetes and cancer. The intensity is such that nearly 61% of deaths in India are now attributed to NCDs, which is highly alarming. This trend can be reversed to a large extent if the cities focus on the built environment that could encourage people to be physically active. ESAF has been promoting the concept of liveability in seven cities since 2008 with the vision that “We want happy and healthy children and families in every neighborhood who have safe streets, free access to parks, playgrounds, open space and fun places to play around”. The progress we have made so far is promising, be it through the sustainable transport programs or with the public space programs. This year, we added 2 new cities in Kerala (Calicut & Trivandrum) to explore further on the strategies that could be replicated to any city. Our strategies of research, policy development, community engagement and capacity building have proven the right one for adding more stakeholders into the system who can work on these issues.

However its coverage has been limited. It has covered only a small portion of the poor children in several states. The total coverage has been about 13 million children in the country in 1978. This has increased to 17 million by the end of 1983. Further there has been no uniformity in organization of school lunch in most of the states. In some states the programme has been limited to certain districts. The school lunch programme has been initiated in Kerala in 1941. The operation of this scheme has spread to all schools by the year 1961-62. Under the scheme, rice or wheat kanji has been given to the children at noon. The present school lunch programme is called Midday Meal Programme (MDM) launched by the Government of India in all states. Under this programme, the entire cost of food grains supplied by the FCI, the cost of transportation of food grains from the godowns of FCI to the schools and the expenditure involved in management, monitoring and evaluation of the scheme are borne by government of India.
