The eleven-track set of mostly praise and worship songs adds a welcome pool of polished, uplifting tunes with a soulful edge to the ocean of often- formulaic modern-day church chants and anthems that have become popular in recent times. The soul-stirring set opens with the brassy worship cut, “Name of Our God.” It quickly segues into the mid-tempo tune “We Live to Worship” before pumping the volume up on the Caribbean-flavored “Psalm 62” that features Destanie J. Winbush, a charismatic worship leader at Atlanta’s Elizabeth Baptist Church. Then, comes “Strong Name,” Paulk’s Top 15 power ballad. Throughout the proceedings, Paulk showcases an earthy yet refined and measured vocal approach that is both heart-wrenching and sophisticated. His thick tenor spreads like warm butter over the traditional-styled ballad “I Made It” and the up-tempo “Alright” – one of three songs he co- wrote with Toronto native, Kurt Kanhai, who produced the project with finesse. “On and On” is a blissful acoustic country track with a catchy chorus and balmy steel guitar by Phil Cross who has worked with a who’s who in southern gospel music such as The Cathedrals and Bill & Gloria Gaither. “There” is reminiscent of Maze ft. Frankie Beverly’s late-night R&B catalogue.

Neal, Thesis Advisor Dr. Allen Anderson, Reader Dr. Andrea Bohlman, Reader © 2016 Mason Taylor Allen ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Mason Taylor Allen: The Musical Features of 2015’s Top-Ranked Country Songs Under the direction of Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal The 2015 top-ten country songs analyzed in this study are characterized by the various formats of their song form, harmonies, and lyrics. This thesis presents a comprehensive study of the structure and narratives in sixty-seven songs that summarizes the distinctive features within those domains of contemporary commercial country music. A detailed description of the norm along with identifiable trends emerges. The song form that features most prominently in this repertory includes a verse-chorus-bridge form with three iterations of the chorus, an intro and outro section, and instrumental sections immediately following each chorus. The top-ten country songs have varying degrees of departure from this typical model. Primary features of the harmonies of these top songs include the frequent use of a double-tonic complex, the absence of a 5-1 authentic cadence, the same chord progression throughout the verse, chorus, and bridge, and the use of only two chords throughout the song. Lyrical analyses show that 2015 songs are continuing the traditional themes about romantic attraction, love, heartache, good times and partying, home, family, nostalgia, religion, and inspiration, within the context of small-town country life that this genre has used for years.

    Brothers Osborne Pawn Shop Album Bio Years before they climbed the country charts with songs like "Stay a Little Longer" and "Rum," the Brothers Osborne grew up in Deale, Maryland, a small fishing town on the Atlantic seaboard. It was a cozy place, filled with blue-collar workers who made their living on the water. During the weekends, many of those workers would head over to the Osborne household, where a series of loose, all-night jam sessions filled the Maryland air with the sounds of Bob Seger, Hank Williams, Tom Petty and George Jones. The Osborne siblings strummed their first chords during those jam sessions. From the very start, TJ Osborne was the brother with the voice. He sang in a thick, low baritone, crooning like Johnny Cash long before he was even old enough to drive. Older brother John, on the other hand, was the family's guitar shredder, his fingers capable of down-home bluegrass licks, arena-worthy rock riffs, country twang, and everything in between. Combined, the two Osbornes could play everything from traditional country music to rock & roll, creating a broad, full-bodied sound that would eventually fill the 11 songs on their major-label debut, Pawn Shop. Like its title suggests, Pawn Shop offers a little bit of everything. There's bluesy slide guitar, country duets, southern rock solos, harmonies, and plenty of groove. The hooks are big, the guitars are loud, and the songs — every last one of them co-written by the Osbornes, who reached out to award-winning songwriters like Shane McAnally and Ross Copperman for help — introduce a duo whose music bridges the gap between the mainstream and the alternative world.
