Chapter II Responsibilities of the Music Executive Frederick Miller, Dean Emeritus School of Music, DePaul University Administrative Organization in Academia In virtually all academic institutions, ultimate authority rests with a governing board, that is, trustees, regents, whatever. As a practical matter, much of the board’s authority is delegated to the president, who retains as much as he or she needs to do the job and passes along the rest to the next person in the institutional chain of command, typically the provost. That person, in turn, keeps what is needed for that office and gives the rest to the deans and department chairs in this downward flow of authority in academia. Whatever title the music executive may hold—dean, chair, and so on—the position will typically be thought of as “middle management.” Others in the academic hierarchy— president, provost, vice presidents—are seen as “upper management,” and as some cynics might view it, hardly anyone is lower than a dean. However accurate this may be, mid-level administrative positions in higher education possess an unmistakable fragility. It stems from the fact that while we may be tenured in our faculty positions, at some professorial rank, we are not tenured in our administrative positions. We are positioned in the hierarchy between faculty, many or most of whom are tenured in their roles, and the upper administration, who typically are less subject to periodic, formal review. We spend much of our time in adversarial relationships with one of these groups on behalf of the other. That is, we may be pressing the upper administration on behalf of some faculty need.

Music by America's Veterans We are proud to announce the release of Unsung Heroes, a collaboration between America’s combat veterans and APM songwriters. Unsung Heroes was born out of the experiences of veteran Richard Casper whose moving story led him to dedicate his life to helping other wounded veterans through the healing power of music through an organization he co-founded, (www.creativets.org). Working together, an American veteran and an APM songwriter write a song inspired by the veteran’s wartime experience and they share songwriting credit and reve- nues from licensing of their music by APM. This first release includes nine powerful songs with both vocal and non-vocal versions. We hope you will be inspired to find a place for these songs in your productions. Steven began his career with Academy Award-winning composer, Hans Zimmer working on the production of The Lion King, I’ll Do Anything, Renaissance Man, Speed and others. Steven then moved on to score countless film, TV, commercial, and trailer projects and founded his own music library. Steven joined APM in 2011 overseeing our custom music studio in Los Angeles and worked with us until his passing in 2015.

The National Music Publishers' Association (NMPA) is the premier trade association representing American music publishers and their songwriter partners. The NMPA's mandate is to protect and advance the interests of music publishers and their songwriter partners in matters relating to the domestic and global protection of music copyrights. From 2001 through 2005, Israelite served as Deputy Chief of Staff and Counselor to the Attorney General of the United States. In this capacity he served as the Attorney General’s personal advisor on all legal, strategic and public affairs issues. In March of 2004, the Attorney General appointed Israelite Chairman of the Department’s Task Force on Intellectual Property. Prior to joining the Department of Justice, he served as the Director of Political and Governmental Affairs for the Republican National Committee. In that role he was the senior advisor to the Chairman of the National Republican Party. From 1997 through 1998, he served as Missouri Senator Kit Bond’s Administrative Assistant, making him the youngest AA in the United States Senate. He also served as Campaign Manager for Senator Bond’s successful 1998 re-election campaign. From 1994 through 1997, Israelite practiced law in the Commercial Litigation Department at the firm of Bryan Cave, LLP in Kansas City, Missouri.

Neal, Thesis Advisor Dr. Allen Anderson, Reader Dr. Andrea Bohlman, Reader © 2016 Mason Taylor Allen ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Mason Taylor Allen: The Musical Features of 2015’s Top-Ranked Country Songs Under the direction of Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal The 2015 top-ten country songs analyzed in this study are characterized by the various formats of their song form, harmonies, and lyrics. This thesis presents a comprehensive study of the structure and narratives in sixty-seven songs that summarizes the distinctive features within those domains of contemporary commercial country music. A detailed description of the norm along with identifiable trends emerges. The song form that features most prominently in this repertory includes a verse-chorus-bridge form with three iterations of the chorus, an intro and outro section, and instrumental sections immediately following each chorus. The top-ten country songs have varying degrees of departure from this typical model. Primary features of the harmonies of these top songs include the frequent use of a double-tonic complex, the absence of a 5-1 authentic cadence, the same chord progression throughout the verse, chorus, and bridge, and the use of only two chords throughout the song. Lyrical analyses show that 2015 songs are continuing the traditional themes about romantic attraction, love, heartache, good times and partying, home, family, nostalgia, religion, and inspiration, within the context of small-town country life that this genre has used for years.

WHEREAS, it is fitting that the members of this body should pause to honor those exemplary citizens who contribute significantly to the reputation of Tennessee throughout the world as the center of the music industry universe and home of the most generous and compassionate citizenry by helping to reinforce the "Volunteer State" nickname; and WHEREAS, one such citizen is John Rich who has garnered high acclaim as a singer, songwriter, record producer, and television personality over the course of his illustrious and storied career in the music and entertainment industry; and WHEREAS, Mr. Rich, born on January 7, 1974, in Amarillo, Texas, moved to middle Tennessee in the early 1990s, where he attended and graduated from Dickson County Senior High School with the class of 1992, making lifelong friends and ties with the community; and WHEREAS, after high school, Mr. Rich chose to forego college to pursue his dream of becoming a country music recording artist. In the summer of 1992, he was chosen by executives at Opryland USA to be a performer in the Nashville-based theme park's daily variety show entitled "Country Music USA," wherein Mr. Rich performed songs by country music superstars such as George Jones, Garth Brooks, George Strait, and Vince Gill; and WHEREAS, during his time at Opryland USA, Mr. Rich met fellow performer Dean Sams, who along with Mr. Rich and two other fellow Texans formed a band named Texassee.
