Memories of Year 13’s Celebration Day

Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Governor colleagues

The exam season is well underway and I want to congratulate all the students who have taken exams so far. Their commitment to their studies, and their behaviour in exams, has been exemplary. This is the case, from Year 10’s (taking their GCSE units for the very first time) to Year 13’s who are veterans of taking exams in this school. We wish all our students taking external exams every success and wish all those students who still have exams to take—all the very best. If you require any information about the

exam timetable or the examinations rules and regulations, then please access the information on the school’s website. I am most grateful to the staff at the school who have given up lots of their time to ensure that students are well prepared for their exams. This will continue right up until the end of the very last exam.

I would like to wish a warm welcome to my new PA, Mrs Mary Johnson- Evans who joined the school on 6th June. We wish her every success in her new role.

I am very pleased to be able to report individual success stories for students. As you can see from the newsletter, we have a budding golfer, we have Scott Chapman in Year 8 who has won a national prize for his entrepreneurship for the second year in a row, and we have two Year 12 students who have won prizes at Young Enterprise. It’s so good to hear of individual and team success stories—please do inform me at the school if your child is involved in an activity outside of school that we are not aware of - we do like to celebrate with them and share all the rich variety of activities and achievements made by our students at Woodlands School.

The premises development is continuing apace at the school. We are beginning to get an idea of the new facilities that we are all going to enjoy from September. I’m sure that over the next few weeks we will begin to see the transformation that this will bring about. Just advance warning that the main hall kitchens will be temporarily closed. The last day of operations will be Wednesday 29th June. From that time, all catering operations will return to the Sixth Form where the food that we have on offer will be available. From 30th June to the end of term on 22nd July, we will be offering a very limited service from the Catering . Further details will be announced nearer the time, and we will keep you posted. We are very excited about the benefits that these new services will bring us, and can only apologise for the inconvenience caused in the interim.

As we have almost reached the end of the year for Year 11 students, I would like to urge parents of Year 11 to donate to the school any items of school uniform that are no longer required (both recently purchased items or any items that have been tucked away in drawers). We can certainly find a good home for them. If you have any unwanted school blazers, school ties, PE kit or any other items that are in good condition, we would really appreciate any donations. Please can you bring any items to the school office in a bag marked “for the attention of Mr Brady”. This would be very much appreciated.

The next newsletter will be published on Friday 1st July.

Yours sincerely

… and just a few Alan Brady more... Headteacher

Well done everyone on the hard work and effort that is going on in school right now in preparation for Year 10 and Year 11 GCSE examinations and Key Stage 3 controlled assessments and end of year tests. Phew – I am rather glad it is not me! Keep up the high standards everyone and enjoy the rest when they are all over. I am delighted to announce that 7R2 and 10R2 are the proud winners of the last two Thinker’s Keys. My thanks go to Miss Elson and Mr Stanmore for guiding their students to success. I am also told that there is a battle between the tutor groups so I can’t wait for the next competition coming up at the end of term! I would also like to share my thanks to 7R1 and Dr. Smith for their effort in raising £34 by selling cakes for the very worthwhile charity – LEPRA. Well done everyone – I am very proud of you all! Finally – keep working hard everyone for your next badge award. We have six weeks left to collect house points and I will be awarding the best tutor group with a prize. Cashless

Catering Our new fingertip Cashless Catering system is now up and running. The children (and hopefully parents) are enjoying our new method of buying and paying for food from the Catering Academy. A reminder that there is a daily £5 spending limit for each student, unless parents contact the school to change the amount they wish their child to spend each day.

Page 7 of 12 - No. 13, 2010-2011

On Wednesday the 25th May, period five, 8N went on a search around the Woodlands school site, finding out the weather in various locations. We were put into small groups (which worked very well) and were sent off by our teacher, Mrs. Crooks, with a kit to assist us in our search. We went to seven different places and found out the direction of clouds, cloud types, the speed of the wind, the temperature, the sort of clothing we should be wearing and whether there were any contrails in the sky.

To find out whether there were any contrails, we simply looked up into the sky. However, with it being so overcast, it made this very difficult. Next, to find out the direction of the clouds and the cloud type, we placed a mirror on the ground and looked into that. Again, with the sky so overcast this was quite difficult. Some

groups were given bubbles which were used to find out the wind speed. Two people stood ten paces away from each other and one blew a bubble. They timed the amount of time it took for the bubble to travel from one person to another, and that gave us our result. For the temperature we held a thermometer an arms width away from us for two minutes and then read what it said.

Finally, we decided whether we were in sun or shade, and used a chart to decide what kind of clothing we would need. As a member of 8N, I found this activity extremely helpful because instead of just sitting in a class room and being told how to record the weather, we were able to actually experience it ourselves.

It was all together a wonderful activity.

Fundraising for Charity

Year 7 raised over £1,000 for the “LEPRA Health in Action charity”

For the past few weeks, the year 7 students have been working hard to raise mon- ey for a charity called ‘LEPRA Health in Action.’ LEPRA Health in Action work hard to raise awareness and funds to help cure people of leprosy. Since the start of the fund raising project, the year 7 students have learnt about the affects of Leprosy as well as learning how easy it is to avoid and cure if funds and facilities are available.

With this in mind, the year 7’s worked hard to raise money for the charity - hosting bake sales and raffles, tombola’s and competitions. The year 7 students have managed to raise an incredible £964! A fantastic achievement! Since this date, more students have handed in money and so the to- tal has risen. Whilst the final amount is not yet definite, the students have raised over £1000! Therefore, thank you to all the students who helped raised money and thank you to all their friends and family who donated. LEPRA Health in Action will now be able to help cure around 47 people of leprosy. CONGRATULATIONS!!

Well done year 7! A fantastic achievement for a very worthy cause

“Youngest ever winner” of the Midlands Schools’ Championships Bradley Moore 8C2

13 year old Bradley Moore, in Year 8 at Woodlands School and a member of Kedleston Park Golf Club, emerged as the youngest ever winner of the Midlands Schools’ Championships. He shot 2 rounds of 75 and 71(a total of 146) on one of the toughest courses in , to win by 4 shots from Cameron Long of Nottinghamshire. ’s Jamie Boler (of Chester- field College and Chesterfield Golf Club) came joint third on 152. Both now qualify for the English Schools’ Finals in Lincolnshire at the end of June. They will be joined there by Joe Dean ( and Renishaw Park GC) who led after the morning round and finished on 153 and in 6th place overall. Two girls, Bethany Griffin (another Year 8 at Ripley Mill Hill School and Horsley Lodge GC) and Emily-Mae Hall (Year 10 at Frederick Gent School and Hollinwell GC) also made through to the Na- tional Finals by finishing in fourth and fifth place respectively in their event. This was a superb performance that saw them play much better than their handicap. In the team event, the girls finished second overall, and the boys third, given that Bradley was com- peting as an individual and not as a member of the team. Team Manager and County Schools’ Secretary, John Barker, commented, “This was a fantastic performance from all of Derbyshire’s players, and especially young Bradley. The composure he showed for one so young was quite remarkable. We have never before had so many qualifying for the National Finals. Hopefully one or two will finish high enough in the event to gain an England cap later in the summer against Scotland.”
