Sovacool Daniel Breslau (Chair) Richard Hirsh (Chair) Science and Technology Studies ABSTRACT Dramatic improvements in renewable energy and small-scale distributed generation (DG) technologies have been made in the last twenty years. Nevertheless, they remain underutilized in the American electric utility system. Despite the immense environmental, technical, and financial promise of renewable energy systems and DG technologies, such generators still constitute a very small percentage of electricity generation capacity in the United States. This relative neglect occurs despite remarkable gains in their technical performance and reductions in their cost of producing power—the result (in part) of dramatic government support for several decades. Moreover, the technologies often demonstrate great environmental benefits that appeal to policymakers and consumers. At the same time, they offer ways to enhance strained distribution and transmission networks. This project attempts to answer the paradoxical question: why do new energy technologies that offer such impressive benefits also find the least use? The dissertation emphasizes how the history and culture of the community of electricity producers and users helps explain why the new technologies have seen little use. Going beyond technical explanations of alleged low capacity factors and high capital costs, it focuses on the social nature of decision making among participants in the electric utility system. The approach not only helps us understand the glossing over of renewable energy and distributed generation technologies, but also suggests ways of overcoming the barriers faced by their advocates. The Plain Dealer head- lined the accidental explosion of eight Nike missiles at Middletown, New Jersey, with a death toll of seven or more. Editorially it lamented “Soviet Russia’s present leadership in the field of rocketry,”and a news item quoted a man identified as “America’s chief tracer of unidentified flying objects” on the danger of withholding UFO information from the public: “Russia might claim flying saucers as a propaganda ‘secret weapon’ at any time.” There was a story on the impending demise of the three-cent stamp, and Dr. Post held various jobs at the National Museum of History and Technology/Museum of American History from 1971 to 1996. From 1974 to 1978 he was special assistant to Brooke Hindle, to whose memory he dedicates this article with gratitude for friendship and support, and, not least, for the title. The emphasis is not on the "nuts and bolts" of American technology development; students pursuing their own research in the history of technology, as a rule, acquire the necessary "hardware" knowledge on their own. Instead, we will focus a) on the forces that have shaped the direction of technological change in the 19th and 20th centuries and b) on the socio-political consequences of technological change . As a secondary goal, the seminar is designed to hone analytical skills . The weekly reading load has been kept to a minimum for two reasons. First, most of the assigned readings consist of essays or chapters from larger works rather than entire books, and making sense of this kind of reading necessarily demands more of the reader. Second, all students will be required to make sense of the readings--by writing a brief analysis of the readings each week (more below).     How to think about science and technology: An Introduction to Science and Technology Studies Roger Turner STS Program Science and technology shape the way we interact with our environment and imagine our bodies. STS is an interdisciplinary field that considers how science and technology work in society. To understand science, we’ll explore questions like: How do scientists establish their credibility? How is scientific knowledge affected by gender? Are there scientific revolutions? Thinking about technology, we’ll discuss: Does technology determine the future? How do people actually use technologies? Is “technology” more than just machines? In this freshman seminar, we’ll read scholars from history, sociology, anthropology and philosophy as they consider how to understand science. The course provides a solid theoretical foundation for future studies in STS, introducing some of its most influential arguments. Assignments Each week you will write a 2-page paper comparing readings A and B listed on the syllabus. Your goal is to show that you understand the readings by describing an important similarity or difference between the two pieces. At the end of term, you will write a final paper (~10 pages) that takes a current event or controversy related to science and/or technology, and analyze that event in light of the theoretical articles we’ve been reading. That evening, the popular musi- cal’s commodification of working-class life struck the wrong note. Adapted from the 2000 film by screenwriter Lee Hall, with uplifting music com- posed by Elton John, Billy Elliot tells the story of a young working-class boy in a coal-mining community in northern England who has unusual talent for ballet dancing—to the mortification of his father and older brother. Billy’s personal journey to achieve artistic fulfillment plays out against the backdrop of the 1984–85 coal-miners’ strike, an epic twelve-month battle in which Margaret Thatcher’s government crushed the dying embers of old-labor militancy. Pitched street battles are conveniently offstage in the musical, while onstage the striking miners and the strike-breaking police- men have a lively ensemble dance. In a “consolatory fantasy of personal escape,” Billy successfully makes it to the Royal Ballet School in London, even while it is made clear that the loss of the strike means that it is curtain time for the miners. Doctor of Philosophy Matthew Timothy Riley Drew University Madison, New Jersey April 2016 i ABSTRACT Reading Beyond Roots: The Theological and Weberian Aspects of Lynn White’s Scholarship Ph.D. Dissertation by Matthew Timothy Riley Graduate Division of Religion Drew Theological School April 2016 Although best known for his perceived critiques of Christianity in his 1967 article, “The Historical Roots of Our Ecologic Crisis,” this dissertation draws upon Lynn Townsend White, jr.’s lesser-known texts and unpublished archival materials to reassess White’s work. I argue that depictions of White that rely solely on reductionistic readings of “Historical Roots” obscure the theoretically rich and nuanced theoretical and methodological underpinnings of his work. The goal of this dissertation, then, is to expand upon the intellectual legacy of White and to develop a deeper understanding of his ideas by exploring his larger body of work, examining his use of Max Weber’s social theory, and by highlighting his religious life and theological ideas, most notably his articulation of a “spiritual democracy of all God’s creatures.” Since White’s work is a primary shaper of much of the scholarship in the field of religion and ecology, I argue that scholars must not just look to White’s critiques, but also to the ii solutions he gives. This provides scholars a broader range of resources and ideas from which to draw as they explore the core issue of religion’s efficacy in addressing the environmental crisis.

Before I entered the world of abstract knowledge production, commodi- fication, and consumption known as academia, I was myself a worker in a world of much more concrete information processing: I was a computer programmer in the US from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s, a time we might now consider the nostalgic heyday of desktop-office information technology (IT).1 In the spirit of full disclosure, before I leap into an analysis of how we might more broadly conceptualize information technology together with information labor in different historical contexts, I have decided to work through my own historical narrative a bit. After all, if historical practice teaches us nothing else, it teaches that each of us makes sense of the world through the lens of personal experience, leaving historians (among others) with the daunting task of interpreting, translating, and finding patterns of meaning in those experiences. Thus I offer this candid admission: ‘‘I was a teenage information worker!’’ And I really was a teen. I began my own IT labors in the early 1980s, not as a producer but as a consumer – buying a home computer and accessories while still in secondary school, and supplementing my lack of in-school exposure to technology with how-to books, so that I could move myself from ‘‘computer literacy’’ to ‘‘computer programming’’.
