General Characteristics of the District 1.1 Location & Geographical Area. The Latur District is in the south-eastern part of the Maharashtra state. Latur town is situated on the 18.7° latitude and 73.25° longitude. The district is situated on the Maharashtra Karnataka boundary. On the eastern side of the Latur is Bidar district of Karnataka, whereas Nanded is on the northeast, Parbhani on the northern side, Beed on the Northwest and Osmanabad on the western and southern side. The entire district of Latur is situated on the Balaghat plateau, 540 to 638 mtrs from the mean sea level The central and western areas of the district are covered by the Balaghat mountain ranges. The central part of the district lies in the Manjra River basin, while the southern area is in the Terna River basin. The northern part of the district is low lying and flat. The main river is Manjara, and Rivers Terna, Tavraja and Dharani are its tributaries. The Manyad and Lendi Rivers flow through the district’s northern area. Dams have been constructed on Manjara, Terna, Dharani, Tiru, Tavraja, and Manyad Rivers. Kanhar soil, a type of very fertile soil is found in the river basins in this district. In some areas, the soil is light and semi fertile whereas other areas have coarse soil. The weather is dry and hot, climate is moderate with medium rainfall. Masonry stone is available on a large scale in the district. 1.2 Topography : Latur is located in the Marathwada region, the southeast part of Maharashtra State. Parbhani is located towards the north of the district, Nanded on its northeast, Bidar (Karnataka State) on the east and northeast, Osmanabad towards its south and west and Beed district towards its southeast. 1.3 Availability of Minerals : Mineral List Mineral list contains entries from the region specified including sub-localities 'Chabazite' Mogánite Quartz 'Heulandite' Mordenite var: Agate Laumontite Natrolite var: Chalcedony Saponite var: Ferroan Saponite 1.4 Forest: In Latur district total Forest Area is 40 Sq.Km. 3 1.5 Administrative set up: Administratively the district is divided 3 Sub Divisions namely Latur, Nilanga & Udgir.Latur district has 10 Tehsils viz. Latur,Udgir, Ahmedpur,Ausa, Nilanga, Renapur, Chakur, Deoni, Shriru and Jalkot. At the District level, Collector is the Administrative Chief and at Tehsil level, Tehsildars are looking after the administration as per Collector’s instructions. For Rural development, Chief Executive officer of Zilla Parishad and at block level, Block Development Officers are in charge of the administration. Municipal Councils for other Tehsils are responsible for urban development of all the Tehsils. There are 10 Panchayat Samities and 6 Nagar Parishads. There are 6 Vidhan Sabha constituencies in thisdistrict. These are Latur City, Latur Rural, Udgir, Ausa, Nilanga and Ahmedpur. The district is divided into 2 Lok Sabha constituencies Latur & Osmanabad. 2.
