General Characteristics of the District 1.1 Location & Geographical Area : Parbhani, earlier also known as “ Prabhavatinagar ”, is one of the Eight districts in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra State This entire Marathwada region, a district geographical region, was a part of the erstwhile Nizam State; later a part of Hyderabad State; after reorganization of states in 1956 it became a part of the then Bombay state; and from 1960 onwards it is part of the present Maharashtra state. Parbhani district lies between 18.45 and 20.10 North Latitudes and 76.13 and 77.39 East Longitude. District Geographical Area 6355 (Sq.km) The district is bounded on the north by Hingoli district. On the east by Nanded district, on the South by Latur and on the West by Beed and Jalna districts. The state capital of Mumbai is to the west; Parbhani is well connected by road to other major towns in Maharashtra and also in the neighboring state of Andhra Pradesh. District Industries Centre is responsible for promoting industrial development and employment generation through Industries. Besides DIC, Other agencies like Br.MSME- DI, Aurangabad ,NSIC Aurangabad, MIDC, MSSIDC, KVIB, MCED, and MITCON are working hand in hand for the development of this District. The State, from time to time implementing industrial policies with objective of creating a level - playing field for free and fair competition & robust industrial growth across the region. Special emphasis has been laid on the development of adequate & quality infrastructure in districts. Development of industrial corridors, Textile parks, Food Parks and Cluster development in near future will create excellent infrastructure and investment opportunities in the district which in future may help flourishing economy. 1.2 Topography: Parbhani district is situated towards the southwest in the State. Hingoli lies to the north of the district, Nanded to the east, Latur and Beed to the south, and Beed and Jalna to its west. 1.3 Availability of Minerals : Nil 3 1.4 Forest: Parbhani District Geographical Area 6355 (Sq.km) Total Forest Area 99 (Sq.km) Forest Deptt. Parbhani,Purna,Palam, Gangakhed, Sonpeth, Sailu, Pathri, Manwat and Jintur. At the District level, Collector is the Administrative Chief and at Tehsil level, Tehsildars are looking after the administration as per Collector’s instructions. For Rural development, Chief Executive officer of Zilla Parishad and at block level, Block Development Officers are in charge of the administration. Municipal Councils for other Tehsils are responsible for urban development of all the Tehsils. There are 9 Panchayat Samities and 8 Nagar Palikas and 1 Nagar nigam.     Nidān, Volume 4, No. 1, July 2019, pp. 1-18 ISSN 2414-8636 The Cantonment Town of Aurangabad: Contextualizing Christian Missionary Activities in the Nineteenth Century Bina Sengar Assistant Professor, Department of History and Ancient Indian Culture School of Social Sciences Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, [email protected] Abstract The cantonment town of Aurangabad has a legacy of being soldier’s territory since the inception of the city of Aurangabad or Khadki/Fatehnagar in the late 13th century (Ramzaan, 1983, Green, 2009). The city’s settlement pattern evolved as per the requirements of cantonment, planned during the Nizamshahi and later, during the Mughal rule in the city. In fact, Aurangabad evolved as a cantonment city even before the British. As we study the city’s networks and its community history, we come across a civic society web, which gathered and settled gradually as service providers or as dependent social groups on the resident military force. In the late eighteenth century when the British allied with the Nizam state of Hyderabad, they were given special place in the Aurangabad cantonment to develop a military base. The British military base in the early decades of the nineteenth century in Aurangabad, thus, worked intensively to cope with the already well-established community connection of a strategic defence town. This research paper will explore and discuss relationships between British soldiers and officers and the well-established societal web of communities living in Aurangabad from early decades of nineteenth century, before the 1857 revolt.
