History of Doyalson Wyee RSL Cricket Club

During the cricketing seasons of 1970-71 and 1971-72 both Clarry Wynn and Trevor Wrightson fielded two junior cricket teams from Mannering Park in the Gosford Wyong Junior Cricket competition, using the cricket gear from the defunct Munmorah Cricket Club. The canvas matting used was also ex-Munmorah. Both Clarry and Trevor supplied any new gear required.

In 1972 Trevor Wrightson approached the Treasurer of the Doyalson RSL Club Tom Foster for assistance to help finance the Junior Cricket club. He was pleasantly surprised when told that the RSL would. Each player would also receive a trophy and give them a presentation party at the end of the season with special trophies for the boys winning batting, and fielding average.

The presentation day was an outstanding success with the club supplying plenty of food and drinks for the boys and parents in attendance. Many members of the RSL made presentation speeches.

During the presentation Tom Foster approached me and said that the Doyalson RSL club would like the club to become the Doyalson RSL Junior Cricket Team, but it would be subject to approval by the main RSL movement in Sydney, which they would seek.

Tom Foster advised me that approval had been granted by the main RSL movement, so an Under 12’s team was fielded in 1973-74 season which was beaten in the grand final by a Gosford team.

It was then decided that we would approach the Cricket Association and field a fourth grade in the 1974-75 season. The association informed us that there was no area allocated to Doyalson, but we could field a team under the Toukley banner. In the mean time, the association in conjunction with NSW Cricket Association would allocate an area to the Doyalson Cricket Club.

The area allocated was from Toukley’s boundary in the south to the boundary of the Newcastle Association at Gwandalan in the north and Wyee in the west and to the ocean on the east.

In the season 1975-76 Doyalson fielded a third, fourth, and an under 16 team. In the season 1976-77 fielded a first grade team, captained by Terry Walters, brother of the great Doug Walters also a second grade team.

This initial history of Doyalson-Wyee District Cricket Club has been appreciably put together by DWDCC first president Trevor Wrightson. We sincerely appreciate his help.

Following a failed merger with the Toukley Cricket Club during the 2013/14 and 2014/15 seasons the club re-formed and entered the Newcastle City and Suburban Cricket Association One Day Competition in the 2015/16 season with immediate success, winning the B3 grade premiership. This has now been followed up by another successful season with the club winning the C6 grade premiership in the 2016/17 season.

After the Christmas break the team had a bad patch loosing, 5 consecutive matches which was going to make it difficult to recover. Due to bad weather they were only able to take the field once in the last 4 rounds to record 1 win and 3 draws.

Whilst the team only lost 8 matches in the 21 round season the weather conspired to take away any chance of a finals berth this season.

Injuries to a number of players, and the loss of 2 players who moved out of the area meant that the team was somewhat weakened and in some cases was forced to play short, all of which lead to the overall position the team found itself.

Despite the disappointing result this season, there were many great individual performances from the members of the team and they should have no trouble bouncing back next season.

The C6 team started the 2016/17 season with a squad of 17 players. The squad was a mix of old and young, experienced and novice players all of whom gelled to form what can only be described as a dominant force in the C6 grade. The team started the season being undefeated after the first six rounds and went on to finish the 21 rounds with only 4 losses to be placed No. 1 on the ladder and take out the Minor Premiership. The team now had to back up its performances during the season in the finals series. In the Semi Final we came up against the 2nd placed team, The Gardens, on a wet deck in Warners Bay. Having won the toss, Brian elected to bowl first, and the team set about rolling The Gardens for 92 runs. In difficult conditions the team set about running down the target, doing so 7 down in the 28th over to progress straight into the Grand Final. With the continued wet weather plaguing the Coast and Newcastle, the Preliminary Finals were washed out and therefore the Grand Finals were to be repeats of the Semi Finals. On what could be best described as a poor choice of ground for a Grand Final (Smith Park) the teams met on an unmowed and wet field to fight out the match. Having lost the toss Doyalson was sent in to bat and in difficult conditions struggled to be 9/105 from the 35 overs, thanks mainly to the tail wagging (40 run 9th partnership T Hughes & P Zuvela). It was now up to the bowlers to show what they were made of, and they did not disappoint. After some incredibly tight bowling The Gardens were 6/49 at the drinks break, with G Scott 2/16, D Knight 0/15 and G Pharo 4/14. After the drinks break The Gardens never got going, and with some great catches taken, A McCulloch 1/25, J Cini 1/6 and T Hughes 2/9 shared the honours in cleaning up the tail for only another 39 runs to have The Gardens all out for 88. The win was a great all round team performance ably managed by the Captain Brian Crutcher. On behalf of the team I would like to offer our thanks to Gloria Bridge and Elizabeth Baldwin who between them scored for the team for the majority of the season. I would also like to thank all those who came and supported the team in it’s Grand Final match. It was also great to see so many come back to the RSL after the match to help celebrate this win.
