BRF PUBLIC SCHOOLS HISTORY CURRICULUM RELATED TO AMERICAN INDIAN STUDIES GRADES 8-12 COMPONENT The following materials represent ongoing work related to the infusion of American Indian history into the History curriculum of the Black River Falls Public Schools. Our efforts in this area have been ongoing for over 20 years and reflect the spirit of Wisconsin Act 31. SEPTEMBER 2011 UPDATE Paul S Rykken Michael Shepard US History and Politics US History BRFHS BRF Middle School Infusion Applications 1 INTRODUCTION AND OVERVIEW The Infusion Task Force was established in December of 2009 for the purpose of improving our efforts regarding the infusion of American Indian history and cultural awareness throughout the BRF Public School K-12 Social Studies Curriculum. This action occurred within the context of several other factors, including the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ho-chunk Nation and the School District and the establishment of a Ho-chunk language offering at BRFHS. Our infusion efforts go back to the early 1990s and were originally spurred by the Wisconsin Legislature’s passage of Act 31 related to the teaching of Native American history and culture within Wisconsin’s public schools. The property at issue consists of three tracts of land, consisting of 74.81 acres, more or less, located in Brown County, Kansas. The property is generally referred to as the “Highway 75 (Simon) tract.” For the reasons discussed below, we affirm the Regional Director’s decision. Thomas Stuart Homestead Historic Context Report Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site Avana Andrade Public Lands History Center at Colorado State University 2/1/2012 1 Thomas Stuart Homestead Site: Historic Context Report Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site in Deer Lodge Montana is currently developing plans for a new contact station. One potential location will affect the site of a late-nineteenth-century historic homestead. Accordingly, the National Park Service and the Montana State Historic Preservation Office need more information about the historic importance of the Thomas Stuart homestead site to determine future decisions concerning the contact station. The following report provides the historic contexts within which to assess the resource’s historic significance according to National Register of Historic Places guidelines. The report examines the site’s association with Thomas Stuart, a Deer Lodge pioneer, and the Menards, a French- Canadian family, and presents the wider historical context of the fur trade, Deer Lodge’s mixed cultural milieu, and the community’s transformation into a settled, agrarian town. Though only indications of foundations and other site features remain at the homestead, the report seeks to give the most complete picture of the site’s history. Site Significance and Integrity The Thomas Stuart homestead site is evaluated according to the National Register of Historic Places, a program designed in the 1960s to provide a comprehensive listing of the United States’ significant historic properties. Listing on the National Register officially verifies a site’s importance and requires park administrators or land managers to consider the significance of the property when planning federally funded projects. -

I am Steve Cadue, Tribal Chairman of the sovereign Kickapoo Nation and I appear before you today to oppose HB 2553. I am opposed to the continuing damaging effort of the Nemaha Brown Watershed District to prevent the Kickapoo Tribe of securing a safe and dependable water supply. Water is life and yes, for the Kickapoo people it is a matter of Life or Perish. We depend on water for a total life-sustaining need including drinking water, health conditions and spiritual blessings. Our Kickapoo people utilized and are dependent on water before the coming of the white man. The United States Supreme Court, Winters v. United States (1908) cited Indian tribal rights original use of water and declared Indian tribe’s use of water before the coming of the white man. Our Kickapoo treaty is the Supreme Law of the Land and is under the protection of the federal trust responsibility of the United States to Indian tribes. Water is a sacred element in our Kickapoo traditions. Water is life. Our Kickapoo tribal reservation homeland is a federally recognized reservation and exists due to treaty agreements with the United States of America. We settled in the land that was called the Kansas territory in the treaty of l832 on the western banks of the Missouri river at Leavenworth. -

Much of the training at Carlisle was intended to break all connections between students and their families. However, the students did have opportunities to record their stories, ideas, and opinions in their school newspapers, even as they were controlled by white staff members. For Pratt's system to flourish, he intended that some graduates from Carlisle and other off-reservation boarding schools would either work at the schools as teachers or return to their reservations to continue his mission. Pratt's objectives required that the students learn both English and a marketable trade. However, some graduates used their newly-developed skills to decry assimilation policies and to denounce the methods practiced at the schools. -
