NEW RECORDS OF CARABID BEETLES (COLEOPTERA: CARABIDAE) IN EASTERN VISAYAS, PHILIPPINES DR. MYRA A. ABAYON College of Arts and Sciences, Leyte Normal University, Tacloban City ABSTRACT A survey of carabid beetles was conducted in six protected forests of Region VIII (Eastern Visayas) namely: Lake Danao, Mt. Nacolod, KuapnitBalinsasayao, Asug Forest, City Forest, and Closed Canopy on January to June of 2019. A total of 7844 individuals belonging to 41 species under 25 genera, 13 tribes, and two (2) subfamilies were recorded in the six selected forests of Leyte and Samar, Eastern Visayas, Philippines. There were 26 species recorded from Lake Danao, 32 species in Mt. Nacolod, 20 species in KuapnitBalinsasayao Forest, 11 species in Asug Forest, 19 species in City Forest and 26 species in Closed Canopy Forest. A total of 19 endemic species were recorded of which 12 are Philippine endemic, six (6) are endemic to Leyte and one (1) is endemic to Samar. After thorough examinations, the study provided new records of carabid beetles in the region. Likewise, new species of carabid beetles were discovered during the conduct of this study. The new records include Brachinusleytensis, Trigonotomagoeltenbothi, Pheropsophusuliweberiin Leyte and Lesticussamarensis in Samar. The new species discovered are Pheropsophusuliweberi and Pheropsophus sp. both are Original Article found in Leyte. These findings proved that the forests in Eastern Visayas can be considered as hotspots of carabid diversity. Appropriate protection and conservation mechanisms should be put in place. -

In particular, the position 15 of Cicindelidae (tiger beetles) appears problematic, as recent studies have found them either 16 within the Hydradephaga based on mitogenomes, or together with several unlikely relatives 17 in Geadeadephaga based on 18S rRNA genes. We newly sequenced nine mitogenomes of 18 representatives of Cicindelidae and three ground beetles (Carabidae), and conducted 19 phylogenetic analyses together with 29 existing mitogenomes of Adephaga. Our results 20 support a basal split of Geadephaga and Hydradephaga, and reveal Cicindelidae, together 21 with Trachypachidae, as sister to all other Geadephaga, supporting their status as Family. We 22 show that alternative arrangements of basal adephagan relationships coincide with increased 23 rates of evolutionary change and with nucleotide compositional bias, but these confounding 24 factors were overcome by the CAT-Poisson model of PhyloBayes. The mitogenome + 18S 25 rRNA combined matrix supports the same topology only after removal of the hypervariable 26 expansion segments. -

Additional Sampling for Aquatic Invertebrates, Tiger Beetles and Shorebirds at Lake Wells
20 March 2020 Australian Potash Limited 4 Cook Street West Perth, WA 6005 Attention: Mr Spencer Shute, Principal Environmental Scientist Additional Sampling for Aquatic Invertebrates, Tiger Beetles and Shorebirds at Lake Wells This report is an addendum to Bennelongia (2019) Lake Wells Potash Project Subterranean Fauna Assessment. The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has advised Australian Potash Limited that more work was required to obtain environmental approvals at the proposed Lake Wells potash deposit. This proposed project will involve the extraction of naturally occurring potassium-rich groundwater brines underlying the Lake Wells salt lake system and their concentration in solar evaporation ponds for the production of sulphate of potash (potassium sulphate), an important plant fertiliser. Additional infrastructure will include salt harvesting and treatment facilities, access and haul roads, an airstrip, accommodation and administration facilities, utility supplies and drainage, and a borefield to produce ‘low salinity’ groundwater for potash processing and domestic purposes. The additional work carried out between 12-15 February 2020 was specifically designed to further understand the distributions of, and assess possible impact on: • Aquatic Invertebrates (especially three species collected in a 2017 survey and known only from the Lake Wells area), • Tiger Beetles, and • Shorebirds and other waterbirds. At the time of survey, the central area of the Lake Wells playa contained little or no surface water. In the north western quarter there was an extensive series of shallow flooded claypans for several kilometres from sites LW 7 to the western extent of the playa. To the south there was a large extent of fresh water in the playa at WPT 91 (see Appendix 2). -

Natural Heritage Claybank Tiger Beetle & Endangered Species Cicindela limbalis Program State Status: Threatened www.mass.gov/nhesp Federal Status: None Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife DESCRIPTION: Tiger beetles are so named because of their “tiger-like” behavior of chasing down and capturing prey with their long mandibles. The Claybank Tiger Beetle (Cicindela limbalis) is 11-16 mm in length (Pearson et al. 2006). It is metallic, reddish or purplish brown in color, with a varying degree of metallic green highlights and distinct white maculations (spots and bands) on the elytra (wing covers). The Purple Tiger Beetle, or “Cow Path Tiger Beetle” (Cicindela purpurea) is similar. However, the Claybank Tiger Beetle has middle maculations (the elongate bars in the middle of the elytra) that are complete, extending to the outer edges of the elytra. On the Purple Tiger Beetle, these maculations do not reach the outer edges of the elytra. In addition, the Purple Tiger Beetle very rarely has front maculations at Cicindela limbalis ▪ MA: Dukes Co., Gosnold ▪ 4 Sep 2008 ▪ Photo by the humeral angle (the “shoulders”), while the Claybank M.W. Forty-three complete or partial mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) from this family have been published in GenBank to date. In this study, we sequenced a nearly complete mitogenome of Amara aulica (Carabidae), using a next-generation sequencing method. This mitogenome was 16,646 bp in length, which encoded the typical 13 mitochondrial protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, and a putative control region. Combining with the published mitogenomes of Carabidae and five outgroup species from Trachypachidae, Gyrinidae and Dytiscidae, we performed phylogenetic estimates under maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference criteria to investigate the phylogenetic relationships of carabid beetles. The results showed that the family Carabidae was a non- monophyletic assemblage. The subfamilies Cicindelinae, Elaphrinae, Carabinae, Trechinae and Harpalinae were recovered as monophyletic groups. Moreover, the clade (Trechinae + (Brachininae + Harpalinae)) was consistently recovered in all analyses. Keywords: ground beetle; mitogenome; next-generation sequencing; phylogeny 1.
