Caring for our Lake our Future The Management Plan for Lake Shkodra Nature Park A Summary Photo © Tonin Macaj Photo © Tonin This brochure is partly funded by the European Union Lake Shkodra: plentiful nature, long human history Protected Areas Network in Albania Nature Park “Lake Shkodra” Lake Shkodra is the largest lake in the Balkan Peninsula, traversing the border between Albania and Montenegro. The lake’s ecosystem and the associated wetlands, floodplains and karstic formations support a rich and unique flora and fauna, making it a hotspot for biodiversity in Europe. The abundant archaeological, historical and cultural sites testify to the rich cultural he- ritage of the Lake Shkodra region dating from prehistoric times. Currently there are about 600,000 inhabitants in the Lake Shkodra basin, 170,000 of which live in the Albanian part. To ensure the protection and sustainable use of the lake’s ecosystem and natural resources, Albanian and Montenegrin authorities have established protected areas covering the lake and part of its watershed. 02 CARING FOR OUR LAKE, OUR FUTURE A complex and dynamic freshwater ecosystem The ecosystem of Lake Shkodra critically depends on its watershed, the surrounding land area that drains into the lake. Lake Shkodra’s watershed covers an area of about 5,500 km2 of which 1,030 km2 is with- in Albania. -

The system, developed in massive Mesozoic limestone, has two distinct resur- gences. Despite relatively limited sampling, its subterranean fauna is rich, composed of a number of local endemics, terrestrial as well as aquatic, including two remarkable relictual species, Arbasus cae- cus (Simon, 1911) and Tritomurus falcifer Cassagnau, 1958. With 38 stygobiotic and troglobiotic species recorded so far, the Coume Ouarnède system is the second richest subterranean hotspot in France and the first one in Pyrenees. This species richness is, however, expected to increase because several taxonomic groups, like Ostracoda, as well as important subterranean habitats, like MSS (“Milieu Souterrain Superficiel”), have not been considered so far in inventories. Similar levels of subterranean biodiversity are expected to occur in less-sampled karsts of central and western Pyrenees. D. dione is distinguished from the other species of the Greek endemic genus Daphniola by a unique combination of shell and soft body character states and by a 7–13% COI sequence divergence when compared to congeneric species. The nominate subgenus comprises six three species, ofwhich are described as viz. A. haicabia A. new, (A.) spec. nov., (A.) junqua spec. A. nov. and A. (A.) provincialis spec. nov., next to (A.) navarrensis Boeters, 1999, A. (A.) perrisii and A. (Dupuy, 1851) (A.) pyrenaica (Boeters, 1983). The new subgenus is proposed for A. (Navarriella) elliptica (Paladilhe, 1874) only. A. (A.) perrisii (Dupuy, 1851) [Hydrobia], the first of this became known from is redefined and species genus that France, described here with two viz. MAGDALENA SZAROWSKA, ANDRZEJ FALNIOWSKI Department of Malacology, Institute of Zoology, Jagiellonian University, Gronostajowa 9, 30-387 Cracow, Poland (e-mail: [email protected]) ABSTRACT: Horatia Bourguignat, 1887 was the first genus established for hydrobiid snails with valvatoid shell, and numerous valvatoid-shelled hydrobioids were classified as Horatia. The genus was the type one for some tribe/family-rank taxa. Thus it is one of the “crucial” hydrobiid genera. Horatia seems to inhabit only Croatia and Macedonia, and its type species: H. klecakiana Bourguignat, 1887, inhabits the springs in the Cetina River Valley. In the present paper the shell, operculum, soft part pigmentation, protoconch SEM microsculpture, female reproductive organs, and penis of H. klecakiana from the spring Studenci, N of Kučiće, in the valley of the Cetina River, Croatia, are described, to confirm the identity of the studied specimens with this species. Mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) and nuclear 18S ribosomal RNA gene sequences are used to infer phylogenetic relationships of Horatia, especially with Radomaniola and the sequence of Horatia from GenBank. The results suggest close relationships of the genus with Sadleriana, not with Radomaniola.
