Music Has Always Been Important for Sara Bareilles. She Began Performing in School at an Early Age Music has always been important for Sara Bareilles. She began performing in school at an early age. Later, she joined a singing group while studying at the University of California, Los Angeles. “I got started my sophomore year at school, and I was just talking about it earlier. Actually, I felt like I just found my home because we were all equally geeky.” Bareilles had an easy time combining singing with songwriting. “They felt very, like, they went hand in hand to me ... writing the songs and singing them. Because I think they are all so personal and I tend to be a very autobiographical writer.” Her songs are often very personal. “I do write very much from my own perspective. I’m writing about things I’ve gone through … and, you know, a lot of relationship stuff and just sort of how I see the world.” She talks about her album “Kaleidoscope Heart.” “I feel like I took more risks this time around both from the songwriting perspective and from a production point, as well. We just kind of swung for the fences. And I wanted to have … I didn’t want to limit myself or self-edit too much this time around, so I 1 learningenglish.voanews.com | Voice of America | 10.3.12 really did what felt good. I had a blast recording the record.” Sara Bareilles is best known for her 2007 hit “Love Song.” You may be surprised to learn why she wrote it. “It was actually written for my record label. I had been turning in new music. I was getting the red light. I couldn’t go into the studio yet because they were waiting for something. But I wouldn’t … nobody said what they were waiting for. So I kept turning in new songs, thinking like, ‘Is this what you want? Is this what you want?’ And it was always a big thumbs down, and I ended up writing ‘Love Song’ out of frustration.” In her career, Bareilles has already earned several Grammy Award nominations and sold more than a million records. "A piano symbolizes the centerpiece of all of that for me, and I'm so happy to join with VH1 Save the Music to launch the Keys + Kids Program to bring 10 piano packages into deserving classrooms. He attended Eton and studied for four years in Frankfurt-am-Main under Ivan Knorr, a Russian teacher of composition. Quilter was known for composing over one hundred songs, although he also wrote an opera, Julia, and a couple ballets. Although his songs are considered to make no great technical demands on the performers, nor intellectual demands on the listener, a Quilter song is easily recognized by the natural flow of his vocal lines. The rhythm of the words is enhanced by the melody, rather than forcing the rhythm into a preconceived melody.

! ABSTRACT Title of Thesis: THE RESPONSES AND REFLECTIONS OF TWO STUDENTS WITH AUTISM BASED ON THEIR EXPERIENCES CREATING, PERFORMING, AND RESPONDING TO MUSIC: A MULTIPLE CASE STUDY Amy C. Weishaar, Master of Arts, 2014 Thesis directed by: Professor Janet Montgomery Department of Music Education The purpose of this study was to describe the responses and reflections of two middle school students with autism as they created, performed, and responded to music during a series of six lessons. A multiple case study methodology was employed. The data collected included audio and video recordings of interviews and lessons, field notes, and work samples. Within-case analyses revealed that one participant communicated primarily through the use of musical and non-verbal modes, with varied levels of communication through words, while the second participant communicated largely through written and spoken language. Four cross-case themes emerged: voluntary cooperative learning style, awareness of popular music culture, sanguine affects, and unique, but functioning responsive and reflective capacities. The findings indicated that both students’ were descriptive, reflective, associative, creative, emotive and empathetic in their own way, and this provided insight into their learning style. Implications for music education and suggestions for future research are provided. ! SDCDArtsNotes An Educational Study Guide from San Diego Civic Dance / San Diego Park & Recreation School Shows – February 11, 2016 10:00am & 11:45am Casa del Prado Theatre, Balboa Park “It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things.” Change --Leonardo da Vinci Welcome! The San Diego Civic Dance Program welcomes you to the school-day performance of Collage 2016: Change, featuring the acclaimed dancers from the San Diego Civic Dance Company in selected numbers from their currently running theatrical performance. The City of San Diego Park and Recreation Department’s Dance Program has been lauded as the standard for which other city-wide dance programs nationwide measure themselves, and give our nearly 3,000 students the ability to work with excellent teachers in a wide variety of dance disciplines. The dancers that comprise the San Diego Civic Dance Company serve as “Dance Ambassadors” for the City of San Diego throughout the year at events as diverse as The Student Shakespeare Festival (for which they received the prize for outstanding Collage entry), Disneyland Resort and at Balboa Park’s December Nights event, to name but a few. In addition to the talented City Dance Staff, these gifted dancers also are given the opportunity to work with noted choreographers from Broadway, London’s West End, Las Vegas, and Major Motion Pictures throughout the year. Collage 2016: Change represents the culmination of choreographic efforts begun in the summer of 2015. Andrea Feier, Dance Specialist for the City of San Diego gave the choreographers a simple guideline: create a dance offering your unique view of change, whether for the audience, the dancers or somewhere else.
