[email protected] ABSTRACT: In the article, cradle to cradle approach, as the desired direction of changes in the manage- ment of resources in production processes, is discussed. The study based on the analysis of literature, action programs, and case studies. Attention has been focused on the development of cradle to cradle approach around the world. The research aimed to raise awareness of the importance of resource management so that waste generation would be eliminated from the manufacturing processes. Resi- dues of consumption and production should be re-integrated into biological or technological circula- tion. Cradle to cradle approach means a revolutionary change in the approach to the organization of following processes: products and services design, production and distribution. It also extends the scope of responsibility of manufacturers and users, but at the same time gives a chance to reduce the negative impact on the environment and to create new job opportunities. Initially, it had only a practical dimension. The industrial revolution seemed as a way to solve the problem of resource scarcity. It appeared that the man has gained a new, almost unlimited possi- bilities to reach resources previously unavailable or even unknown. Today with greater humility we look at these possibilities. This happened not because of the actual lack of access to resources, but rather because of the environmental and social (including health) consequences of wasteful exploitation and the growing cost of acquiring them. Growing demand on natural resources is caused by increasing human population and aspiration of billions of people in less developed countries to reach a higher level of consumption, recently typical for rich part of western societies. Now it has access to resources for all. A studied territorial complex comprises two Polish voivodships (Warmia and Mazury, Podlasie) and two Lithuanian counties (Marijampolė and Alytus). The principal research sites were Polish counties (Polish: powiat, the second-level unit of local government and administration in Poland) and Lithuanian municipalities (Lithuanian: savivaldybė, the second-level unit of local government and administration in Lithuania), which represent corresponding territorial units in the respec- tive national administrative structures. Abstract The paper presents the possibility of using county roads of lesser strategic importance (others) for sustainable development of the entire area. That possibility was presented as the concept of “Warmia Landscape Road” based on the example of Olsztyn Rural County. It includes the roads planned during the 18th C. that are currently in operation connecting rural locations, residences or monumental objects (mansions-palaces-parks), lined with trees and forming avenues. Roads-avenues, as the elements of technical infrastructure are authentic elements of the landscape of Warmia (and some parts of Mazury). They may form a complementary esthetic-cultural-landscape component for visitors and represent a means for activation, and as a consequence sustainable development of rural areas.     Downloaded by [University of Wisconsin - Madison] at 05:00 18 January 2017 THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF THE PRUSSIAN CRUSADE The Archaeology of the Prussian Crusade explores the archaeology and material culture of the Crusade against the Prussian tribes in the thirteenth century, and the subsequent society created by the Teutonic Order that lasted into the six- teenth century. It provides the first synthesis of the material culture of a unique crusading society created in the south-eastern Baltic region over the course of the thirteenth century. It encompasses the full range of archaeological data, from standing buildings through to artefacts and ecofacts, integrated with writ- ten and artistic sources. The work is sub-divided into broadly chronological themes, beginning with a historical outline, exploring the settlements, castles, towns and landscapes of the Teutonic Order’s theocratic state and concluding with the role of the reconstructed and ruined monuments of medieval Prussia in the modern world in the context of modern Polish culture. This is the first work on the archaeology of medieval Prussia in any lan- guage, and is intended as a comprehensive introduction to a period and area of growing interest. This book represents an important contribution to promot- ing international awareness of the cultural heritage of the Baltic region, which has been rapidly increasing over the last few decades.
