  • Gateway to the World | Eldad Brin in Its Tourism and Pilgrimage Industry and Leaving a Decisive Mark on Its Cityscape
Gateway to the Abstract Jerusalem Airport played a vital World role in the economic and social life of Jordanian-controlled Jerusalem The Golden Age of (1948–1967), despite its basic infrastructure and its situation Jerusalem Airport, of operating under political and 1948–67 technical constraints, and subject to disruptive domestic and regional Eldad Brin unrest. The unique draw of Jerusalem for Christian and Muslim pilgrims as well as the city’s ideal geographical location vis-à-vis the region as a whole established the small airport as the prime gateway to the city and to Jordan. It became a vital connection for middle-class and upper middle- class West Bank Palestinian residents to the outside world for the sake of work, study, and leisure. As such, it served as a critical link between Arab Jerusalem and the Arab world. Key words Jerusalem; Jordan; commercial aviation; pilgrimage; tourism. Jerusalem Airport (known also as Qalandiya Airport or Atarot Airport), located between Jerusalem and Ramallah, near the village of Qalandiya and Qalandiya refugee camp, operated for about seventy-five years under three successive political jurisdictions (British, 1925–48; Jordanian, 1948–67; Israeli, 1967–2001). Under Jordanian rule, it was a major port of entry for pilgrims, tourists, and distinguished visitors to Jerusalem and to Jordan itself. It is tempting to draw a parallel between the Jordanian upgrading of what had been, almost exclusively, a British military Jerusalem Quarterly 85 [ 61 ] airstrip into a small but busy international airport,1 and the Ottoman inauguration of the rail link from Jaffa to Jerusalem in late 1892.

GRANDEAU JANUARY 1995 THE PROCESSES OF AIRLINE OPERATIONAL CONTROL by Seth C. Grandeau Submitted to the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics on January 27, 1995 in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Science ABSTRACT The airline industry has undergone many drastic changes in the way operations are conducted since the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978. The Federal Aviation Administration of the Department of Transportation, however, has not fully kept up with these changes. This has created tension between the airlines and the FAA, who, responsible for providing air traffic control and management, is using decades old technology and procedures to handle modern day problems. This thesis details the process of building and implementing an airline schedule. This is based on interviews with several major US airlines. Particular attention is paid to the day to day running of the airline at the Airline Operations Control Center. Several areas are identified where the FAA can provide better ATC service to the airlines, and to the traveling public.

  • AIAA 2015 Remarks for Administrator Bolden June 24, 2015
AIAA 2015 Remarks for Administrator Bolden June 24, 2015 Good morning Aviation 2015! We have a few of members of Team NASA at this conference and I hope in particularly you’ll stick around to hear from Dr. Jaiwon Shin who runs NASA’s Aeronautics Mission Directorate and Bob Pearce – our Director for Strategy, Architecture and Analysis. They’ll be participating at Forum 360 later this morning and – trust me on this -- you won’t want to miss it. To everyone with AIAA, thank you for putting on such an outstanding conference, and for all the work you do on behalf of our field. As a pilot myself, your work has always been near and dear to my heart. I believe I saw a few of you last week at the Paris Air Show. I must say that feeling the energy there and sensing the energy in this room – it’s a reminder of what an exciting time this is to be working in the aerospace field. I can tell you that there are about 1.5 trillion reasons why I say that. Now, I know you know this – but as Dr. King is said to have taught, sometimes it’s important to preach to the choir, because otherwise they might stop singing. Aviation generates more than $1.5 trillion – with a “T” – in economic activity each year. It supports more than 11.8 million jobs (both directly and indirectly) and as an engine of commerce, it transports 18.1 billion tons of freight year-after-year. Although my French is a little rusty – even after returning from overseas – I believe the term for all this is “une grosse affaire,” or in English, “a big deal.” 2 I always enjoy coming to this event.
