Berg Received: 29 April 2014; in revised form: 15 November 2014 / Accepted: 24 November 2014 / Published: 28 November 2014 Abstract: To date, martial arts involvement is often described in controversial terms. While some studies report increased anti-social behavior as a result of martial arts involvement, other findings refer to a more positive social and personal development. This paradox has resulted in an ambiguous public discourse on their value and legitimacy as socially accepted sports, often leading to a dichotomization between “good” and “bad” styles of martial arts. Up until now however, there has been a lack of empirical proof that this “good versus bad” perspective divides along the lines of specific martial arts styles. Consequently, the distinct moral and medical concerns regarding the effects of involvement in harder martial arts—combined with their increased popularity, as well as their perceived positive outcomes for specific target groups—have resulted in a growing demand among policy makers to develop (or rethink) their strategy towards the regulation and support of these sports.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE Influence of the stances in the straight punch’s impact force in karate Authors’ Contribution: Vinicius Aguiar de Souza1ACDE, Fernanda Todeschini Viero2AB, André Mattos A Study Design 3CDE 2AB B Data Collection Marques , Noe Gomes Borges Junior C Statistical Analysis D Manuscript Preparation 1 Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan E Funds Collection 2 Center for Sports Science and Health, State University of Santa Catarina, Florianopolis, Brazil 3 Graduate Program of Economics, Department of Economics, Federal University of Paraíba, Pessoa, Brazil Received: 29 July 2018; Accepted: 23 August 2018; Published online: 05 October 2018 AoBID: 12243 Abstract Background and Study Aim: In the early literature on karate, it is empirically suggested that biomechanical variable such as executing time and impact force are affected by the stance. The aim of the research is to verify the hypothesis: there is no difference in the maximum impact force between natural (shizen-tai) and front (zenkutsu-dachi) stances; the maximum impact force may differ between the two stances because of the weight distribution on the lower limbs, and a greater engagement of body parts (effective mass) and joints. Material and Methods: The impact force of a straight punch was acquired for eight highly trained back belt karate practitioners (age: 47.5 ±10.13 years; height: 1.76 ±0.03 m; mass: 86.08 ±17.43 kg; expertise: 32.13 ±8.87 years) using two load cells (maximum capacity: 2000 N) fixed between two parallel boards with the same dimensions of a tar- get. The subjects executed a straight punch while adopting two stances: natural and front stance targeting the force measurement device at full power.

Kyokushin Budo Kai The Ultimate Beginners Guide Revision 2.02 www.kyokushinbudokai.org Kyokushin Budo Kai The Ultimate Beginners Guide Page 1 of 129 Introduction and Acknowledgements Welcome! Thank you for downloading 'Kyokushin Budo Kai: The Ultimate Beginners Guide' from www.kyokushinbudokai.org. This document and the site which provides it are the premier English language resources for all things Budokai. Both the site and this guide are freely available and of benefit to practitioners of Kyokushin Budo Kai, Kyokushin Karate (at times known as 'Kyokushinkai'), Judo, Jiu Jitsu (aka. Ju Jitsu), Free Fight and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) worldwide. As a student of Kyokushin Budo Kai, I have spent many hundreds of hours researching websites, in four different languages, in an effort to gain as much knowledge as possible concerning the International Kyokushin Budokai, Jon Bluming (founder and President) and background information concerning the martial arts that make up the Kyokushin Budo Kai system. I would like to thank all Budoka that have posted material online. Without their efforts - the construction of this single source of information would not have been possible. This document has been compiled following many, many, many months of internet research into the techniques and philosophies of the styles of Kyokushin Budo Kai, Kyokushin Karate, Jiu Jutsu, Judo and Sambo. I researched it's contents purely for the purpose of PERSONAL development and in order to improve my understanding as a practitioner of Kyokushin Karate, Judo and Jiu Jitsu under my Sensei, Charley Herwig (3. Dan), who's Dojo is associated with International Kyokushin Budo Kai.
