    Preserving and Providing Access to Canada's Printed Heritage: The Canadian Institute for Historical Microreproductions at zy Years Myriam McCormack' The Canadian Institute for Historical Microreproductions / Institut canadien de microreproductions historiques (CIHM/ICMH), a non- profit corporation, was established in I978 at the urging of the Canadian research community. CIHM's initial mission was to preserve and disseminate on microfiche early printed monographs that contained information about Canada, were written by Canadian authors, or had a Canadian imprint. At its founding, CIHM received a one-time grant of $1 million from the Canada Council. Investment income from the grant, in addition to revenues from subscription sales and vigorous fund-raising, ensured that there were sufficient funds to complete the initial mandated project as well as several others. CIHM's task was to find materials that fit each project's defined parameters, persuade holding institutions to lend the materials for microfilming, make preservation-quality microfiche reproductions, and publicize to the Canadian library community and public the availability of microfiche copies. So far, CIHM has successfully completed five major projects to preserve and disseminate early Canadiana on microfiche (including monographs and serials published in Canada and elsewhere from I998 to I920), and currently is making steady progress with a sixth project: the microfilming and digital scanning of early Canadian government publications. These collections are available to researchers throughout the world. This I Myriam McCormack worked with CIHM for twenty years, beginning as a cataloguer and eventually overseeing bibliographic research, microfilming, and the implementation of digital scanning production. She is currently a cataloguer with the National Library of Canada.

    Introduction That a volume of the poetry of Alexander McLachlan should be given a foremost place in the Literature of Canada: Poetry and Prose in Reprint series cannot be questioned. Douglas Lochhead in his introduction to one of the volumes of this series - Dewart's anthology, Selections from Canadian Poets - has focussed atten- tion on the argument of Edward Hartley Dewart that 'a national literature is an essential element in the formation of national character.' If the statement was important in 1864 when the Canadian nation struggling to be born was composed of largely homogeneous ethnic groups, it is of even greater significance to- day, when so many of the Dominion's population are recent immigrants from many nations, who have only a very limited notion of what the Canadian 'national character' is, or of the identity they are seeking when they take out Canadian citizen- ship. Even many Canadians of the second or third generation have an equally vague notion of what Canada is all about. While back- ground studies in history, politics, and sociology make a good attempt to overcome deficient knowledge of the past, these alone are not enough. They need to be supplemented with studies in the early literature of Canada; and foremost in any literature stands the work of the poets. Dewart ranks Alexander McLachlan as a major early Canadian poet second only in importance to Charles Sangster. While much of his poetry may appear imitative and of a highly derivative nature, seen in its proper historic perspective it is more than just a pale reflection of the intellectual ideas permeating the thought of nineteenth-century British writers.

    Introduction Charles G.D. Roberts was one of Canada's most productive writers. In a literary career that extended over six and a half decades, he published some three hundred and fifty poems, over two hundred short stories, nine full-length novels, six other books (including travel-guides, histories, and a translation) and a con- siderable number of articles, essays, and prefaces. It is scarcely surprising, therefore, that the standard of his writing is extremely uneven, or that his best work - and this is at least as true of his poetry as of his prose - is always in danger of being buried under the dross. As it happens, Roberts had himself encountered, and commented on, a similar situation in the case of Wordsworth (see pp. 271-5 below). He observed that 'severe selection was called for in order that full justice might be done to the genius of Wordsworth,' and went on to argue that the interest of the student 'makes it imperative that he should be brought first in contact with Wordsworth's genius through the medium of a volume of selections.' These remarks are equally applicable to Roberts' own work, and express the rationale for the present book. In 1936 Roberts published his own Selected Poems, which included approximately one-half of his total poetic output. At first sight, this would seem an ideal introduction to his poetry, but unfortunately, like many other poets, Roberts is not neces- sarily the best judge of his own writings. A surprisingly large number of inferior pieces remain, and their presence too often detracts from the impressiveness of the rest.

    Postwar Canadian Academic Libraries, 1945–60 Lorne D. Bruce University of Guelph (retired) ABSTRACT This article undertakes a historical survey of university and college library developments in Canada between 1945 and 1960. It examines contemporary accounts in relation to library architecture, the acquisition and organization of collections, administrative library structures and staffing, services for faculty and students, and efforts by librarians to realize professional standing. A national review of academic libraries and librarianship expands our knowledge beyond the typical themes applied to this era: “growth” and “progress.” The architectural redefinition of libraries, the impetus to establish research collections, the maturation of academic librarianship, and the increasing complexity of library operations were prominent features in the postwar period. The gradual evolution of academic libraries toward more uniform organizational purposes and structures on a national basis following World War II can be considered a period of “midcentury modernization” that preceded the more memorable and better documented decades of the 1960s and later.     John Van Rys Review Article The Range of Douglas Lochhead Tiger in The Skull: New and Selected Poems, /959-/985. By Douglas Lochhead. Fredericton: Fiddlehead Poetry Books and Goose Lane Editions, 1986. Pp. 130. $12.95. The dust jacket of Douglas Lochhead's latest volume of poetry claims that what lies between the covers "makes the range, substance and fertility of Lochhead's work available for the first time in a single volume." As a general rule, statements on dust jackets are not to be trusted, but having read the volume, I must agree that this statement is true. In the variety of subjects Lochhead addresses and in his formal variations, as well as in his repeated concern for seeing anew and communicating the complexity of place and history, these poems offer Lochhead's understanding of people and poetry. Tiger in The Skull does represent well the range of Lochhead's poetry, living up to its subtitle New and Selected Poems, 1959-1985. Of the ninety-three poems in the volume, the first seventy come from previously published volumes asnd the final twenty-three represent Lochhead's most recent efforts. Poems from virtually all earlier volumes are present in this volume, from The Heart is Fire ( 1959) to The Panic Field ( 1984). The poems Lochhead has chosen to include in Tiger in The Skull are chiefly short lyrics or meditations, although he does give a taste of longer poems or poem sequences such as High Marsh Road( 1980). His subject matter has as its focus the elemental in life, whether he is speaking about the Maritime landscape, about history or death, or about family and human relationships.
