GREENWICH PARK CONSERVATION PLAN 2019-2029 GPR_DO_17.0 ‘Greenwich is unique - a place of pilgrimage, as increasing numbers of visitors obviously demonstrate, a place for inspiration, imagination and sheer pleasure. Majestic buildings, park, views, unseen meridian and a wealth of history form a unified whole of international importance. The maintenance and management of this great place requires sensitivity and constant care.’ ROYAL PARKS REVIEW OF GREEWNICH PARK 1995 CHAIRMAN’S FOREWORD Greenwich Park is England’s oldest enclosed public park, a Grade1 listed landscape that forms two thirds of the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site. The parks essential character is created by its dramatic topography juxtaposed with its grand formal landscape design. Its sense of place draws on the magnificent views of sky and river, the modern docklands panorama, the City of London and the remarkable Baroque architectural ensemble which surrounds the park and its established associations with time and space. Still in its 1433 boundaries, with an ancient deer herd and a wealth of natural and historic features Greenwich Park attracts 4.7 million visitors a year which is estimated to rise to 6 million by 2030. We recognise that its capacity as an internationally significant heritage site and a treasured local space is under threat from overuse, tree diseases and a range of infrastructural problems. I am delighted to introduce this Greenwich Park Conservation Plan, developed as part of the Greenwich Park Revealed Project. The plan has been written in a new format which we hope will reflect the importance that we place on creating robust and thoughtful plans. -

(Bob Thall, photographer) OLD CHICAGO WATER TOWER DISTRICT Bounded by Chicago Avenue, Seneca and Pearson streets, and Michigan Avenue. The district is com prised of the Old Chicago Water Tower, Chicago Avenue Pumping Station, Fire Station of Engine Company No. 98, Seneca and Water Tower parks. The district was designated a Chicago Landmark by the City Council on October 6, 1971; the district was expanded by the City Council on June 10, 1981. Standing on both north corners of the prominent inter section of Michigan and Chicago avenues are two important and historic links with the past, the Old Chicago Water Tower and the Chicago Avenue Pumping Station. The Old Water Tower, on the northwest corner, has long been recog nized as Chicago's most familiar and beloved landmark. The more architecturally interesting of the two structures, it is no longer functional and has not been since early in this century. The Pumping Station, the still functioning unit of the old waterworks, stands on the northeast corner. When the waterworks were constructed at this site in the late 1860s, there was no busy Michigan Avenue separating the adjoining picturesque buildings. -

Our sector has, for many years, been banging the drum for the historic environment to be recognised - not as a fossil of past times - but as a vital resource for the future. The research reported here demonstrates this more starkly than ever, particularly with climate change being recognised as the biggest challenge facing us today. While the threat it poses to our cherished historic environment is substantial, there are multiple ways in which historic structures can create opportunities for a more sustainable way of living. Huge amounts of carbon are locked up in existing historic buildings. Continuing to use and re-use these assets can reduce the need for new carbon-generating construction activities, thereby reducing the need for new material extraction and reducing waste production. Our built environment is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions – the third biggest in most assessments. It is therefore exciting to see that this year’s Heritage Counts research shows that we can dramatically reduce carbon in existing buildings through retrofit, refurbishment and, very importantly, through regular repair and maintenance. -

It includes 682 buildings and sites known to be at risk from Tneglect, decay or inappropriate development - everything from an early 18th century church designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor, to a boathouse built during WWI on an island in the Thames. These are sites that need imagination and investment. In London the scale of this challenge has grown. There are 12 more assets on the Heritage at Risk Register this year compared to 2015. We also know that it’s becoming more expensive to repair many of our buildings at risk. In the face of these challenges we’re grateful for the help and support of all those who continue to champion our historic environment. -
Glasgow Herald Buildings
M072 Glasgow Herald Buildings Introduction The major alterations and additions to the Buchanan Street offices of the Glasgow Herald newspaper were one of John Honeyman & Keppie's biggest jobs, and one of the outstanding commercial building projects of 1890s Glasgow. The main element (phase 3 in John Honeyman & Keppie's job book) was a large new building at the rear in Mitchell Street. The job books also record a number of smaller, self-contained schemes for fitting out individual offices, and for other alterations. Authorship: Mackintosh himself claimed responsibility for the Mitchell Street building. His handwriting is on many of the surviving drawings, at least one contemporary architectural periodical ascribed the 'individuality' of the design to him, and the architect W. S. Moyes, who later worked in Honeyman, Keppie & Mackintosh's office, stated the Glasgow Herald was Mackintosh's design. 1 However, it is extremely unlikely that such an important commission would have been placed entirely in his hands while he was still a young assistant, and there must have been substantial input from John Keppie, and possibly John Honeyman. BANKSIDE POWER STATION: PLANNING, POLITICS AND POLLUTION Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Leicester by Stephen Andrew Murray Centre for Urban History University of Leicester 2014 Bankside Power Station ii Bankside Power Station: Planning, Politics and Pollution Stephen Andrew Murray Abstract Electricity has been a feature of the British urban landscape since the 1890s. Yet there are few accounts of urban electricity undertakings or their generating stations. This history of Bankside power station uses government and company records to analyse the supply, development and use of electricity in the City of London, and the political, economic and social contexts in which the power station was planned, designed and operated. The close-focus adopted reveals issues that are not identified in, or are qualifying or counter-examples to, the existing macro-scale accounts of the wider electricity industry. Contrary to the perceived backwardness of the industry in the inter-war period this study demonstrates that Bankside was part of an efficient and profitable private company which was increasingly subject to bureaucratic centralised control. Significant decision-making processes are examined including post-war urban planning by local and central government and technological decision-making in the electricity industry. The study contributes to the history of technology and the environment through an analysis of the technologies that were proposed or deployed at the post-war power station, including those intended to mitigate its impact, together with an examination of their long-term effectiveness. Bankside made a valuable contribution to electricity supplies in London until the 1973 Middle East oil crisis compromised its economic viability.
