The result is that a vast majority of rural households are excluded from financial services, reproducing their lack access to sources of income and to sources of protection from income shocks. The imperfect nature of credit markets comes from the fact that loans are transactions over time occurring under imperfect information between lender and borrower. This creates four problems that need to be solved for a loan transaction to occur: Adverse selection in recognizing borrower types. Moral hazard in project choice and management by borrowers. Need for insurance by borrowers to limit personal exposure. Moral hazard in loan repayment. The consequence of these difficulties is that formal lenders require the pledging of collateral. As a consequence, credit markets are both wealth constrained, which severely limits access for the poor, and risk constrained as the poor cannot expose collateral to risk even if they have collateral to pledge such as title over a house or a plot of land.

    Dhirubhai Ambani International Model United Nations 2019 Forum: GA2: Economic and Financial Issue: Improving microcredit systems to help eradicate poverty Student Officer: Sahil Rane Position: Deputy Chair Introduction More than 3 billion people live on less than $2.50 a day and an estimated 1.3 billion live in extreme poverty, making do with $1.25 or less daily. Economists have been trying to come up with various innovations in order to counter poverty; microcredit is one such innovation. Microcredit is used to describe small loans granted to low-income individuals that are excluded from the traditional banking system.1 It extends financial opportunities to the poor by providing more reliable financial services. The microcredit sector is a dynamic and fast growing sector with annual growth of over 9% in the global portfolio of loans and the number of active borrowers including a growth rate of up to 50% in some countries like India.23 Financial inclusion, today, is extremely important for the progress of a country; it is the provision of financial services to all in an equitable manner and for affordable costs. Financial inclusion has great potential to help improve the standard of life that people enjoy in Less Economically Developed Countries (LEDCs) by promoting investment in business ventures. Globally, 1.7 billion adults remain unbanked, yet two-thirds of them own a mobile phone that could help them access financial services. This further emphasises the necessity of financial inclusion and the scope for the use of technology in microcredit.4 Furthermore, the World Bank has identified financial inclusion as an enabler for 7 of the sustainable development goals.5 Most financial institutions do not provide financial services to the poor because of perceived high risks, high costs of transaction, and the inability of the poor to provide collateral for loans.

Net Stockholders’ Equity grew by 16.9% reaching ARS 54,637.9 million, which evidences a clear comfortable situation. On the same level, the indicators that are usually used to measure performance in the activity also show a satisfactory evolution in the period. The Bank has broadly maintained its participation in the loan, deposit and service market, with such risk and finance management that places it among the entities with the best credit quality and liquidity ratios.     Foreign banks entry in emerging market economies: a host country perspective. Juan Cárdenas Juan Pablo Graf Pascual O’Dogherty* Introduction During the last decade several emerging market economies (EME) have lifted restrictions on foreign direct investment (FDI) in their financial systems. As a result, foreign ownership of domestic institutions has been growing rapidly. Today, in many Latin American as well as Central and Eastern European countries foreign banks control more than 50 percent of their banking system’s assets. 1 Some impacts of foreign bank entry have been thoroughly studied (see for example Clarke et al (2001)), while others are seldom mentioned. The aim of this paper consists in highlighting some policy-oriented issues that have arisen with the entry of foreign banks in emerging market economies from the point of view of a host country. The first part of the paper introduces some empirical studies on foreign banks’ entry and its implications for local financial systems and economies; the second, deals with effects on the soundness of local entities and the third, discusses possible adverse effects on market discipline. Finally, some conclusions are drawn in the last section. 1.- Impacts of FDI in host countries financial systems and economies. The entry of foreign banks brings large benefits to host countries’ financial systems and economies at large. Benefits stem from efficiency gains brought about by new technologies, products and management techniques as well as from increased competition stimulated by new entrants. Moreover, as foreign banks may have greater access to resources from abroad, they have more stable funding and lending patterns than domestic banks.
