Galgano The Holocaust has raised difficult questions since its end in April 1945 including how could such an atrocity happen and how could ordinary people carry out a policy of extermination against a whole race? To answer these puzzling questions, most historians look inside the Nazi Party to discern the Holocaust’s inner-workings: official decrees and memos against the Jews and other untermenschen1, the role of the SS, and the organization and brutality within concentration and extermination camps. However, a vital question about the Holocaust is missing when examining these criteria: who was watching? Through research, the local inhabitants’ knowledge of a nearby concentration camp, extermination camp or mass shooting site and its purpose was evident and widespread. -

Fielder Valone Indiana University Much of our knowledge of the Holocaust in Lithuania is based on experien- ces in or near Vilnius and Kaunas. In the smaller towns, where tens of thou- sands of Jews lived before the war, so few survived that first-hand accounts are rare; all the less do official German sources offer a window onto events, recording little more than overall numbers. The present contribution draws attention to a lesser-known collection of survivor testimonies gathered after the war by Leyb Koniuchowsky, primarily in Germany’s Feldafing dis- placed persons camp. Case studies of ritual humiliation of Jews by their small-town and village neighbors, experiences in a minor camp complex, and the pursuit of vengeance by one survivor who gained temporary employment in the postwar Soviet security services, point toward the place of oral testimony in elucidating events in hard-to-document places. They raise questions about whether events in better-known localities were “typical” or not. “Stories,” wrote Jorge Semprun, “never begin where they seem to have begun.”1 This story begins with an ending, after the Germans surrendered but well before the scope of Hitler’s crimes was fully understood. -

ABSTRACT The landscapes and material remains of the Holocaust survive in various forms as physical reminders of the suffering and persecution of this period in European history. However, whilst clearly defined historical narratives exist, many of the archaeological remnants of these sites remain ill-defined, unrecorded and even, in some cases, unlocated. Such a situation has arisen as a result of a number of political, social, ethical and religious factors which, coupled with the scale of the crimes, has often inhibited systematic search. This thesis will outline how a non- invasive archaeological methodology has been implemented at two case study sites, with such issues at its core, thus allowing them to be addressed in terms of their scientific and historical value, whilst acknowledging their commemorative and religious significance. -

It ran the camps throughout Germany, such as Dachau, Bergen-Belsen and Community portal Buchenwald; in Nazi-occupied Europe, it ran Auschwitz in German occupied Poland and Recent changes Mauthausen in Austria as well as numerous other concentration and death camps. Wrong Memory Codes? The Polish “Blue” Police and Collaboration in the Holocaust In 2016, seventy-one years after the end of World War II, the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs disseminated a long list of “wrong memory codes” (błędne kody pamięci), or expressions that “falsify the role of Poland during World War II” and that are to be reported to the nearest Polish diplomat for further action. Sadly—and not by chance—the list elaborated by the enterprising humanists at the Polish Foreign Ministry includes for the most part expressions linked to the Holocaust. On the long list of these “wrong memory codes,” which they aspire to expunge from historical narrative, one finds, among others: “Polish genocide,” “Polish war crimes,” “Polish mass murders,” “Polish internment camps,” “Polish work camps,” and—most important for the purposes of this text—“Polish participation in the Holocaust.” The issue of “wrong memory codes” will from time to time reappear in this study. -

Understanding Shades of Grey: The Testimonies of Two Former Auschwitz- Birkenau Sonderkommando Survivors: The Gabbai Brothers. by SARAH JESSICA GREGORY A chapter from a larger thesis titled “Understanding Shades of Grey: The Written and Oral Testimonies of Jewish Prisoner Functionaries” submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts Honours in Modern History Macquarie University 2012 This essay focuses on two Jewish Sonderkommando members from the Nazi death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau and how they have constructed their written and oral testimonies after the Holocaust. Prisoner functionaries such as the Sonderkommando were prisoners used by the Nazis to control the everyday functioning of the labour and death camps. In return, they received “privileges,” such as more food for their cooperation. Because of this cooperation, many non-privileged prisoners viewed these prisoner functionaries as Nazi collaborators, particularly when recounting their own experiences. This made many prisoner functionaries self-impose a degree of silence for fear of judgement and retribution after the war. The Sonderkommando, for example, remained largely silent after their liberation from Allied forces because of fear of judgement and misunderstandings of their position. The Nazis used the Sonderkommando, the ‘special unit’ or squad, as forced labourers to facilitate the extermination process of the “Jewish problem.” Sonderkommando members ensured the fast-paced undressing phase of prisoners prior to their gassing, removed bodies from the gas chambers and relocated them to the furnace room or large outdoor pits for cremation; removed valuable items, hair and gold teeth, and disposed of the human ashes from the crematoriums.1 In return for this work, Sonderkommando members received greater quantities of food, better living arrangements, and more leisure time. -

LINDERT By K Lesli Ligorner Fetching the newspaper from your porch, you look up and wave at your elderly neighbor across the street. This quiet man emigrated to the United States from Europe in the 1950s. Upon scanning the newspaper, you discover his picture on the front page and a story revealing that he guarded a notorious Nazi concen- tration camp. How would you react if you knew that this neighbor became a natu- ralized citizen in 1962 and that naturalization requires "good moral character"? The systematic persecution and destruction of innocent peoples from 1933 until 1945 remains a dark chapter in the annals of twentieth century history. Though the War Crimes Trials at Nilnberg' occurred over fifty years ago, the search for those who participated in Nazi-sponsored persecution has not ended. -

Author: Astrid Juckenack Malmö Högskola Human Rights III; MR106L Spring 2016 Supervisor: Malin Isaksson 1 Human Rights III, Spring 2016 Astrid Juckenack (930613-T005) Abstract The points of departure in this thesis are the reciprocal relationship between the memories of human rights violations, the application of the relevant law and the understanding of what is criminal, as well as the recent trend in German courts to belatedly try low-profile Nazi- criminals. To explore these phenomena further, a critical discourse analysis incorporating historical elements is conducted on the 2015 trial of “the bookkeeper of Auschwitz” Oskar Gröning and the related media-reports. By identifying and investigating the expression of collective memory therein, a shift is revealed in that low-level participation in the Holocaust is no longer remembered as a moral infringement exclusively, but accepted as a criminal act for which a perpetrator ought to be held liable. Alongside Holocaust-focused collective memory, there are further tendencies toward a distinct memory of the prolonged failure of the German judiciary. It was thus found that long-term societal change can prevail against a deeply ingrained culture of impunity. You are now standing on the outside on a cold and bitter morning, listening for the sound of a truck that will take you to an extermination camp for certain death because you have not asked for mercy and none has been given. After standing about fifteen minutes you hear the sound of a truck approaching and you know what that means. Suddenly, and without even being aware of it, you begin to concentrate hard on not being sent to an extermination camp because you want to live and someday return home again. As you are concentrating you become aware that the person in charge of the camp is walking in your direction. He stops right in front of you and, without saying a word, motions his right hand, signaling you to get back to the work group. You cannot understand why he is doing this when he seemed so determined that you should be sent to an extermination camp. Now your spirits are uplifted again because as long as you can remain in a work group there is hope of surviving this ordeal. Do you believe that your own mental concentration caused it to happen? 8. After staying in a work group for about six weeks, the person in charge of the camp changes his mind and orders that you be shipped out to an extermination camp. This time you begin to accept death as inevitable because you can no longer remain in a work group. You are taken to a railroad station and ordered to enter an open type freight car with about 150 others who are no longer able to perform the heavy physical work. -

INTIMACY IMPRISONED: INTIMATE HUMAN RELATIONS IN THE HOLOCAUST CAMPS In fulfillment of EUH 6990 Dr. Daniel E. Miller 1 December 2000 Donna R. Fluharty 2 Each person surviving the Holocaust has their own personal narrative. A great number of these narratives have been written; many have been published. It is important for personal accounts to be told by each survivor, as each narrative brings a different perspective to the combined history. Knowing this, I dedicate my research to the narratives I was unable to read, whether they were simply unavailable or, unfortunately, unwritten. More importantly, this research is dedicated to those whose stories will never be told. 3 In his book Man’s Search for Meaning, Viktor Frankl states that a human being is able to withstand any condition if there is sufficient meaning to his existence, a theme which permeates the entire work. 1 For a significant number of people, the right to this search for meaning was denied by a Holocaust which took the lives of an undetermined number of European Jews, war criminals, homosexuals, Gypsies, children, and mentally or physically handicapped persons. This denial of humanness was an essential component of Adolph Hitler’s plan to elevate the Aryan nation and rid the world of undesirables. In spite of laws which dictated human associations, through the triumph of the human spirit, certain prisoners of the Nazi ghettos, labor camps, and death camps were able to survive. Many of these survivors have graced the academic and public world with a written account of their experiences as prisoners of the Nazis.
