1414 | Mountain| JULY 2015Monthly | |Mountain SEPTEMBER Monthly2016 Kinglake Landcare Group Spring is here or is it sprinter?

Springtime is here and many of us burst into life as the weather gets warmer, as many plants and animals do too. Yet our concept of spring derives from our Eurocentric understanding of seasons, which are more clearly defined there. August in Kinglake, for example, we have already been enjoying the many species of flowering yellow and cream wattles, mauve/purple Hardenbergia violaceae, white/cream even pink hakeas in late winter into spring. Indigenous Australians have long recognised that there were more ‘seasons’. Well known scientist, Professor Tim Entwistle, in his recent CSIRO publication agrees and suggests that we could recognise the late winter into early spring, and late spring into summer by redefining them as ‘Sprinter and Sprummer’.

Whatever names we use, nature’s species keep their own seasonal timing and we should enjoy and work in with their patterns.

Coming events

In September, visiting National Landcare delegates will learn how recovery and rebuilding is taking shape in Kinglake and Kilmore (http:/nationallandcareconference.org.au/). The first stop will be at Willomavin where they will learn about fire recovery fencing on site.

After lunch at Kinglake West’s Flying Tarts Bakery, the group visit Green Army works taking place at the Stony Creek Reserve home to very significant wildlife including Brush-tailed Phascogales and Long-nosed Bandicoots. Tim Entwisle, one of Australia’s leading botanists, believes there are five seasons in Victoria. He calls the period from August to September ‘Sprinter’ believing that spring comes earlier to southern Australia.

As August comes around, I also see indigenous tuber plants, such as the Yam Daisies and Maroon greenhoods, spread their leaves and begin to flower. This means it’s a good time to plant crops that also store their carbohydrates underground, such as beetroot, potatoes, carrots, and onions. As plants begin to flower in August, you will also see insects and birds searching for pollen and nectar. I like to have my ‘insect motels’ ready by August, to provide shelter for native bees and wasps (which are both stingless).

If you have not begun spring planting though, don’t be alarmed. It is definitely not too late. Below are a few tips to get your spring vegie crops up and running:

• Fix your current vegie beds or if you don’t have any yet, be sure to make them so you can access plants from all sides. • Add compost to your plots to provide valuable micronutrients and help your soil hold and release water. • Rotate your crops by planting root crops after you’ve harvested your leafy greens in winter. • If you are not in hurry for produce, turn over your soil and wait for annual weeds to appear. Pull out the weeds and then plant your crops. 16 | Mountain Monthly | SEPTEMBER 2016 Greater Glider in Kinglake National Park. PARKS VICTORIA

20 | JUNE 2015 | Mountain Monthly Mountain Monthly | SEPTEMBER 2016 | 19 Knee pain in adolescents Osgood Schlatters disease is a very common cause of knee pain in children between the ages of 10 and 15 years and is more likely to affect boys. It was named after two physicians in 1903 - Dr Robert Osgood and Dr Carl Schlatter. The condition usually develops during periods of rapid growth, combined with high activity levels. As the young athlete’s bones grow quickly, it can take some time for the muscles and tendons to catch up. These changes result in a pulling force from the patella tendon, on to the Tibial Tuberosity at the top of the shin. This area then becomes inflamed, painful and swollen. This is frequent in younger people because their bones are still soft and are not yet fully grown. With repeated trauma, new bone grows back during the Anzac Day had a foggy start. healing process which causes a bony lump often felt at the Tibial Tuberosity. In July we were lucky enough to get a mild night to enjoy outdoor light painting. This entailed slow shutter speeds, tripod and light painting our subjects with a torch and coloured filters. We also had a studio setting indoors to create some fantastic studio style photography. It was a great night and everyone had the opportunity to learn a little more about their cameras and how to get different effects. My name is Tayla. I live in Kinglake West and am 11 years old and have lived in the Kinglake Ranges my whole life. I like coming to the youth group because it gives me something to do after school and to socialise with other kids from other schools. I love the bush and the wildlife and spending time outside with my friends and on my trampoline with my phone. I care about my animals including my cat (Cookie), my bird (Harry) and my dog (Rosie). I like looking after my kitten Cookie and playing with my dog Rosie. I love summer because my birthday is in summer and I get to go to the pool in Whittlesea. I also love playing football with my Dad. I do arts and craft at home with my mum.
