CHRONOLOGY OF VILLA SITES
The use of this list should be paired with consultation of the correspondent entry in the catalogue, where it is explained what the available dating ele- ments are in each case (i.e., building activity dated to a certain era or material nds, such as pottery, etc.). If excavators detected a building phase in, say, the rst century a.d. and recovered artifacts dating to the third century a.d., the time span of villa occupation that is assumed below covers the period from the rst to the third century, unless the excavations speci cally detected that a site was abandoned and then occupied again at a later time. In this case, the box referring to the century between the two attested phases is left blank. In the case of eld survey, the chronological span indicated by the objects recovered is reported as being the lifespan of the villa, but this picture may very well change if excavations should occur in the future. Finally, the data used to elaborate the charts are what is available in publications, but they do not necessarily offer the complete picture about a given site.
