Elmwood Park Church Old Testament Survey Saturdays, 11:30am - 1:30pm Summer 2014 Course Description: this introductory course in the Old Testament is intended to train students to study the Old Testament well by utilizing basic interpretive methods, to give students a basic introduction to the contents of the Old Testament, and to foster faithful diligent reading of the Old Testament as a relational discipline. This course requires extensive reading. Be prepared to devote substantial time to reading for this course. There will be minimal benefit from this course if you do not complete the reading and/or cannot attend regularly. The reading will be difficult be extremely fruitful! Course Objectives: • Train students to utilize the study tools in the ESV (essays, notes, maps, charts, apparatuses, etc.) along with basic interpretive methods. Students should be able to understand these tools and methods' importance and utilize them in the study of the Old Testament. • Survey the contents the Old Testament. Students will not master the content of the Old Testament but should gain a better understanding of basic Old Testament content. • Foster faithful and diligent reading of the Old Testament as a relational discipline. Anyone can use exegetical tools and methods to study scripture; the goal of this course is to foster study disciplines that help students hear God speak to them through scripture. Students should be able to apply the Old Testament to their lives. Course Text The ESV Study Bible. Wheaton, Il: Crossway , 2008. ISBN 1-4335-0241-0 • Please note that there are several versions of the ESV Study Bible. You are strongly encouraged to get the standard, ESV Study Bible for this course. A New, Hardcover, ESV Study Bible is relatively inexpensive on Amazon. Simply go to Amazon.com and search for the ISBN # above. • Crossway also offers a “Personal Sized” paperback version of the ESV Study Bible that is even more inexpensive on Amazon (ISBN 1-4335-3083-X). This version is acceptable but some of the important reference essays are not included in this version, though they are available for free online. If you are unable to afford an ESV Study Bible but would like to have one, please contact Tim Miller. • You are free to use a different study bible (i.e. NIV Study Bible, MacArthur Study Bible) if you already own one or you would prefer to buy a different one for some reason. However, the course will utilize the tools and reference materials from the ESV Study Bible. While there are other wonderfully valuable study bibles, the course will be most beneficial if we are all working from the same text. Students are strongly encouraged to purchase an ESV Study Bible, it is a tremendous resource.
