✩ M A K E H O L L Y W O O D Y O U R S ✩ Flag Design Contest CHNC invites you to participate in our contest to design an official flag for Hollywood! Flags are symbols of pride that recognize the specialness of a place. We are proud of Hollywood because you make it special. Help us announce that to the world by designing a flag to represent our neighborhood. Below is some info to help. We’ll pick 10 finalists and invite those designers to present and explain their work to the Council. We’ll then choose one overall winner and winners in special categories. All winners will receive a flyable version of their flag, and we’ll fly the overall winner’s design across our neighborhood! Please submit your work by March 31, 2021 in digital form to [email protected]. Vexillology (/ˌvɛksɪˈlɒlədʒi/ ) is the study of the history, symbolism and usage of flags A person who designs flags is a vexillographer , and the art of flag-designing is called vexillography . The Five Principles of Vexillology: 1) Keep It Simple. The flag should be so simple that anyone can draw it from memory. 2) Use Meaningful Symbolism. The flag’s images, colors, or patterns should relate to what it symbolizes. 3) Use 2 or 3 Basic Colors. Limit the number of colors on the flag to three which contrast well and come from the standard color set. 4) No Lettering or Seals. Never use writing of any kind or an organization’s seal. 5) Be Distinctive or Be Related. Avoid duplicating other flags, but use similarities to show connections. ⤤ Keep these guidelines in mind, as you design your flag - on the next page!
