Comics historians often note that she is the first female superhero—and she certainly more in common with the likes of the Superman and the Spectre than she does with other jungle-dwelling characters. At least in her earliest appearances, such as the ones featured in this book. As the Fantomah series evolved, it went through distinct phases. Each volume in this three- volume NUELOW series provides highlights from each of them. We hope you enjoy this look at one of Fantomah’s three lives, and that you’ll join us for future books where she is transformed into a traditional “jungle girl” and then the ruler of a hidden civilization. 1 A Celebration of Superheroes Virtual Conference 2021 May 01-May 08 #DePaulHeroes Conference organizer: Paul Booth ([email protected]) with Elise Fong and Rebecca Woods 2 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This has been a strange year, to be sure. My appreciation to everyone who has stuck with us throughout the trials and tribulations of the pandemic. The 2020 Celebration of Superheroes was postponed until 2021, and then went virtual – but throughout it all, over 90% of our speakers, both our keynotes, our featured speakers, and most of our vendors stuck with us. Thank you all so much! This conference couldn’t have happened without help from: • The College of Communication at DePaul University (especially Gina Christodoulou, Michael DeAngelis, Aaron Krupp, Lexa Murphy, and Lea Palmeno) • The University Research Council at DePaul University • The School of Cinematic Arts, The Latin American/Latino Studies Program, and the Center for Latino Research at DePaul University • My research assistants, Elise Fong and Rebecca Woods • Our Keynotes, Dr. Frederick Aldama and Sarah Kuhn (thank you!) • All our speakers… • And all of you! Conference book and swag We are selling our conference book and conference swag again this year! It’s all virtual, so check out our website popcultureconference.com to see how you can order. All proceeds from book sales benefit Global Girl Media, and all proceeds from swag benefit this year’s charity, Vigilant Love. DISCORD and Popcultureconference.com As a virtual conference, A Celebration of Superheroes is using Discord as our conference ‘hub’ and our website PopCultureConference.com as our presentation space. While live keynotes, featured speakers, and special events will take place on Zoom on May 01, Discord is where you will be able to continue the conversation spurred by a given event and our website is where you can find the panels.

Comic books have rarely been treated as a serious art form or cultural phenomenon. It used to be that creating a comic book would be considered shameful or something done only as side work. Beginning in the 1990s, some comic creators were able to leverage enough cultural capital to influence more media. In the post-9/11 world, generic elements of superheroes began to resonate with audiences; superheroes fight against injustices and are able to confront the evils in today’s America. This has created a billion dollar, Oscar-award-winning industry of superhero movies, as well as allowed created comic book careers for artists and writers.

  • The Rise of Superhero Therapy
Utilizing Superheroes in Play Therapy and Counseling NASW-Illinois Chapter Statewide Conference: A Meeting of the Professions Sophia Ansari, LPCC Midwest Play Therapy Institute October 24, 2017 The Rise of Superhero Therapy 1 Geek Therapy and Geek Culture • Geek Affirmative Therapy- therapy that is grounded in empirically-supported methodology and uses an artifact of geek culture. • Uses superhero symbolism as a tool in therapy • A geek is a person who makes a conscious effort to develop his or her knowledge about an interest. Sports vs. geek culture clash? 2 • One of the earliest pioneers was Lauretta Bender (Bender- Gestalt Visual Motor Test) • Published work on therapeutic properties of superheroes • Asked to testify at a hearing that looked to stop the public criticism regarding comics • Congress would eventually side with her viewpoints that “comic- book reading is not the cause of emotional maladjustment in children.” • Embrace it! Don’t pathologize it! • We as therapists need to know more about the things that are important to our clients. • If it matters for our clients it should matter for us. 3 Why Superheroes? • A cultural topic that influences so many people • Their role in positive psychology • They help those in need, uphold strict codes of honor • They have very human backgrounds • Great role models • Go through an emotional, mental, physical journey • Same struggles as us (relationships, tough decisions) • Offers chance to process relationships, morals and values • Makes the client feel less alone, and more understood when they can connect and relate to the characters in the stories 4 • Comics, books, movies are a reflection of the world around us • Superheroes show us who we are and what we are capable of achieving.
