January 1993 Report Number DL/bw3/93 SUMMARY 1 In England and Wales the NRA is the competent authority for the EC Directive concerning the Quality of Bathing Waters (76/160/EEC). This report lists the bathing water quality results for Hampshire, Sussex, Kent and the Isle of Wight for the 1992 bathing season. The report also includes the results of marine algal monitoring and beach aesthetic surveys carried out at the same time or at the same sites. 2 The NRA Southern Region sampled 67 EC bathing waters weekly between 1st May and the end of September. A minimum of 20 samples were collected for coliform and faecal streptococci analysis and two samples were collected for Salmonella and Enterovirus analysis. 43 other bathing waters were sampled weekly for coliforms and faecal streptococci. On each visit sampling officers also recorded a range of physical and chemical parameters. 3 The UK Government currently uses the mandatory faecal coliform and total coliform standards as the basis for determining compliance with the Directive. This year 51 EC bathing waters in the Region (76%) conformed with the coliform standards, compared with 78.8% for all bathing waters in the UK. This was an increase of 9% compared with 1991 and is partly in response to completed remedial schemes and partly due to changes in analytical methods.

    *Manuscript Click here to view linked References The geological history of the Isle of Wight: an overview of the ‘diamond in 1 Britain’s geological crown’ 2 3 4 Abstract 5 6 The geology of the Isle of Wight has attracted both the amateur and professional 7 geologist alike for well over two centuries. It presents a cornucopia of things 8 geological and offers a window into the fascinating story of the geological history and 9 10 landscape development of southern England, as well as an important teaching 11 resource for all levels of study from primary education through to academic research. 12 13 This paper provides a geological framework and a summary of the history of research 14 15 as context for the papers in this issue can be placed. Inevitably, it can only offer a 16 précis of the huge amount of information available, but it is hoped will also give 17 added impetus to further investigation of the literature or, indeed, new research. 18 19 The island offers a field workshop for topics such as lithostratigraphy, sequence 20 21 stratigraphy, tectonics and climate change; studies that are becoming ever more 22 international in their influence. Include overflows which discharge within approximately a tidal excursion of the bathing water. Screen geographical for rivers which discharger within approximately a tidal excursion of the bathing water. Include overflows which discharge to these rivers. The process is carried out separately for each of the 83 bathing waters in our area. A tidal excursion is the track that an object (a tracer) would take if thrown into the water. For example, a tracer thrown in at high water will move with the ebbing tidal until the tidal direction changes and then it starts to move back towards its original release point. Similarly a tracer released low water will move with the flooding tide until the tidal direction changes.

    Anchorages between Selsey and Portland Tony Firth – Port Solent Yacht Club This list is far from exhaustive and is only intended to indicate some places that I or friends have found useful or enjoyable (I’ve added some pictures taken by Jacqui Howe and myself to this 2013 version and shall try to add to and improve these as time goes on). Where an anchorage is well known but I haven’t tried it, I have said so. In principle we can anchor anywhere where it isn’t actually prohibited – we aren’t restricted to areas with an anchor symbol on the chart. However, common sense will suggest that anchoring in prohibited areas or channels, among swinging moorings, near charted submarine cables or in locations with strong tidal streams is not a good idea. Under the ColRegs vessels of under 50m LOA are obliged to show a black ball on the forward part of the boat in daylight, and an all-round white light in a similar position at night. I’m assuming a suitable type and weight of anchor and sufficient cable (to anchor with confidence in depths up to 10m requires 40-50 m of cable of which at least 20 m should be chain) and that the cable is laid out properly rather than dropped in a heap. A particular anchorage may be OK in a slight roll for a heavy sailing cruiser but much less acceptable in boats with less ballast and flatter bottoms and especially for fast motor cruisers. Comfort at anchor can often be improved by: · Reducing snubbing by bending a strong nylon warp to the chain with a rolling hitch, paying out a few more metres of chain and warp, making
