08 February 2010 28 March 2017 CELEBRATED AUSTRALIAN AND IRISH SINGERS PAY HOMAGE TO GREAT IRISH POETS IN ANCIENT RAIN A soulful, theatrical song-cycle from two of the world’s most acclaimed musical performers Iconic Australian singer-songwriter Paul Kelly and magnetic Irish chanteuse Camille O’Sullivan pay tribute to the words of W.B. Yeats and other great Irish poets of the past century with Ancient Rain in Queensland Performing Arts Centre’s (QPAC’s) Concert Hall on Tuesday 13 June 2017. Ancient Rain combines original songs and music, together with spoken word inspired by more than a century of Irish writing. Paul and Camille inhabit a range of characters in this mesmerising performance, revealing a tapestry of themes, from the cost of love, the price of independence, to the inadequacy of faith and the power of forgiveness. Created in collaboration with composer/pianist Feargal Murray and director Chris Drummond, Ancient Rain offers a unique visual and aural concert experience through a series of simply staged moments, and sheds new light on the artistry of these celebrated Australian and Irish musicians. Camille’s majestic vocal command and Paul’s ingeniously understated yet evocative lyricism unite in service of stories of love, loss and redemption. With a career spanning more than 30 years, Paul Kelly is truly one of Australia’s pre- eminent singer-songwriters and musicians of our time. His career output includes more than 20 studio albums and multiple film soundtracks, and in 1997 he was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. He has created some of Australia’s, and more specifically Melbourne anthems; from Leaps and Bounds which immortalised the iconic MCG to From St Kilda to Kings Cross, Kelly’s songs are lodged deep in the Australian psyche. Cont… …2 Camille O’Sullivan is one of Ireland’s finest, most amusing and wholly mesmerising performers. As much a storyteller as she is singer, her last show in Australia was Changeling in 2015 which featured her interpretations of songs by Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Tom Waits and Nick Cave to name just a few. She has performed sold out solo shows worldwide, guest starred in Olivier Award-winning La Clique, of which she was an original cast member in London’s West End, and as an actress she’s appeared in films such as Oscar-nominated Mrs Henderson alongside Judi Dench. It’s no surprise that her love of narrative and storytelling has led to this perfect partnership with Paul Kelly where they can demonstrate their appreciation of some of poetry’s greats.     A BOOKLET BECAME A BOOK Most songs were recorded live between 2004 and 2010 at various places during the A to Z shows. These usually ran over four nights – each night a different song list as I worked my way alphabetically through around a hundred songs. The idea was to present the songs undressed, in many cases close to how they sounded when they were first written, before being arranged with a band. I imagined a nice chunky booklet to accompany the recordings – some storytelling, notes on the songs and influences, and so on. I started writing a few things down and didn’t stop. Two years later I had a book. To replace the booklet that became a book, I decided to assemble pictures that would tell stories another way. I hope you enjoy them. The text on the following pages comes from How to Make Gravy, published by Penguin.   • Miles Brown Is an Australian Thereminist, Composer and Experimental Artist
    Miles Brown is an Australian thereminist, composer and experimental artist. Working with the ethereal interface of this gesturally-controlled instrument, he conjures unique emotional landscapes that query the relationships between space, sound, electronics and the body. Through composition, performance and cross-disciplinary collaboration, he develops new contexts for theremin that both expand upon and subvert its traditional uses. Miles’ work is a constant celebration of originality, strangeness, and the beauty of unorthodox creative combinations. Current works investigate the theremin in the realms of dance music, art sound, soundtrack, site-specific installation and analogue electronics. Miles was born in Hobart, Tasmania, and cut his creative teeth in the experimental art community in Melbourne, Australia. With his band The Night Terrors, Miles has explored the theremin as a lead instrument in an electronic rock scenario, releasing five albums (The Night Terrors [2001], Lightless [2002], Back To Zero [2009], Spiral Vortex [2014] and Pavor Nocturnus [2014]), and touring Europe and Australia extensively supporting acts such as Hawkwind, Goblin, Serena-Maneesh, Melt-Banana, Boris and Black Mountain. In 2009 Miles received an Australia Council grant to travel to Oxford (UK) to undertake a theremin mentorship with Lydia Kavina, the world’s leading classical thereminist (grand-niece of Leon Theremin, the inventor of the instrument). He also attended the “Without Touch” Theremin Festival in Lippstadt (DE), performing alongside theremin greats such as Kavina, Carolina Eyck, and Barbara Bucholz. He has also worked closely with Australian experimental industrial band Heirs, touring Australia and Europe and contributing to the records Fowl (2010) and Hunter (2012). In May 2014 Miles was commissioned by the City of Melbourne to compose an album of music for the Melbourne Town Hall’s Grand Pipe Organ.

AFI award-winning director Ian Darling (The Oasis, Polly And Me, In The Company of Actors, Alone Across Australia, Woodstock for Capitalists) and his Shark Island Productions team have created a multi-layered film that incorporates interviews, concert performance, rehearsal performance, archive footage, recreations and animation to tell a seamless story that covers Kelly’s forty years in the music business. While first and foremost a rock-and-roll musician, Paul Kelly has also acted, written prose and scored film. He is intimately involved, through practice and relationships, with the full spectrum of Australian culture. Kelly has also, perhaps more than any of his contemporaries, been involved in Australian cultural and political life. The film reflects these activities and so, 2012 © ATOM SCREEN EDUCATION as well as being about the life of Paul Kelly, it is also about our times. The interview subjects include various members of Kelly’s family, many of his fellow musicians and friends including novelists Richard Flanagan and Fiona McGregor, film director Rachel Perkins and musicians Megan Washington and Archie Roach.
