She’s young, I know, but she’s also tiny (other 2-year-olds have already asserted their authority with the occasional bite or hit). I worry what life will look like for her in a school with older and bigger kids, especially because she has a tendency to be shy. Add to my anxiety Leslie J. Thompson’s piece “Lasting Scars” on page 18. Leslie explored the lasting impact that bullying can have on kids, including a rare but real diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). How do you help without hovering? Read the story to find out. Then turn to the very last page in the magazine. You’ll notice we’ve added a brand-new — and really fun — column. “Mommy Fails” is a place where we as moms (and dads) can share (and laugh) at some of the comical situations we’ve encountered along our parenting journeys. I would love for you to share yours with me. I promise to share some of mine in the coming months too. Send me your blunders at editorial@ dfwchild.com. I’m looking forward to hearing from you.

The doorbell is ringing back to back as day care kids keep showing up. 7:35AM My other half gets ready to take the kids to school, and off they go. 8AM The younger kiddos play with Legos in the playroom as the older kids argue about whose turn it is on the tablet. 8:05AM It’s time to say goodbye to my man as he leaves to go train someone for work, and say hello to my assistant as she shows up to help me for a few hours. 9AM It’s art time. We are making hand art. As I paint the kids’ hands, my assistant washes them. Painting gets messy and hectic with eight kiddos. 10AM Circle time. We count, sing our ABCs, go over shapes and dance until lunch is ready. 11AM All the kids line up, and we wash our hands, sit at the table and eat lunch. MEET THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

The importance of school leaders to the success of our children’s education is often underestimated. Their philosophies, aspirations and initiatives are key to a thriving educational model. Meet some of these visionaries and gain some insight into the workings of a flourishing school.

It is hard to capture the heart of Alcuin School just from reading our mission statement, newsletters and visiting our website. It is when one spends time on the campus that one feels the aura of infinite possibilities, as we educate the whole child to face the challenges of a world of disruptive ideas and global values. This is a diverse, coeducational, vibrant and nurturing community that enjoys an intellectually invigorating atmosphere. Our students develop a strong belief in themselves and confidence in the future. If you value imagination, integrity, independence, inquiry and community, Alcuin School would be a good home for you. This unique program offers the perfect education for the global society of the 21st century. The Montessori philosophy teaches students to be decision makers, to think creatively and to work collaboratively while empowering them with the knowledge and skills of an exceptional education. We complement this with the International Baccalaureate program from middle school through 10th grade, and then on to the IB Diploma Programme for 11th and 12th grades. An Alcuin education fosters critical thinking and a lifelong passion for learning. With faculty support, students are eager to embrace change, question the status quo and prepare for their future as “Innovative Thinkers and Passionate Learners.” Come join us as we continue to advance education at Alcuin School.

Parents recognize the value of allowing their bright, independent children to progress academically at an advanced rate. As educators, we believe that children who are academically and socially capable of more advanced work should be allowed to accelerate according to their abilities and desires. Starting at first grade and continuing through college-level work, higher achievement is standard order of the day at Yorktown Education. Here, a student’s education is customized to fit his or her own unique learning style, strengths, and interests. Yorktown Education understands that no two students are alike and takes great strides in creating a curriculum that fosters this approach. In addition to a solid core foundation of the basics in education, students are also encouraged to take advanced offerings such as Mandarin Chinese, computer coding, drama, art, and 3-D printing. We even require three advanced thinking classes! Middle and high school students may opt for dual enrollment college courses at our college partners. Yorktown Education students can earn up to 60 college credits (saving two years of college tuition and time with more than 400 courses) before high school graduation. The Christmas tree had been removed. Interior and exterior lights were boxed up along with multiple Christmas pillows, candles, boxes and various other holiday decorations. Everything was cleaned up and returned to the attic for the next 11 months. It was beginning to look a lot like…normal. That is when I noticed it. In the business and rush to get it cleaned and return to normal, I found a small wooden manger and nativity set. When I removed all the “stuff of Christmas,” what remained was the most important gift! I have decided to leave the nativity set up. My prayer for you and your family as you move into and through 2017 is that you may know and celebrate the manger each day. At Prince of Peace Christian School our mission is to provide a Christ-centered exemplary education, developing disciples and leaders for service and success in the 21st century. Through passionate and gifted faculty and staff, in classrooms, labs, stage, courts and fields of play and competition, we desire to provide each child with opportunities to courageously explore, develop and apply the gifts that God has given them. We also believe in teaching and celebrating the life-changing message of the Gospel, the story of the manger, leading to the cross, the empty tomb and what it means for each of us. May God bless you and your family in 2017. MEET THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dallas Reading and Language Services Although the play structure is relatively small, it sports a regular slide, double racing slide, triple racing slide, two regular swings and two baby swings, plus built-in Speech Therapy toys, a rock climbing wall and other climbing features. Tall plastic “treetops” stationed over the play set provide & Reading minimal shade. Extras: Coomer Park has a large open field for active Programs play and a half-mile walking trail for a stroll with the family pet; however, only one bench and two picnic tables We Embrace the Amazing offer spots to sit while you watch your children play. And in Every Child with no grills and no restrooms, the park is best for a quick trip to release some energy. Safety: Though the playground received an A* on the Playground Safety Report Card, keep in mind that big kids and tots will have to play together on the park’s single play set. Also, the wood-chip fill contained minor litter at the time of our review. —Sydni Ellis This review was distributed to the City of Garland Parks and OUR RESULTS SPEAK FOR Recreation Department for further review and/or action.
