  • Buddy Miller's Majestic Silver Strings New West Records
Buddy Miller’s Majestic Silver Strings New West Records Buddy Miller, named Artist of the Decade by No Depression Magazine, teamed up with esteemed guitarists Marc Ribot, Bill Frisell and Greg Leisz to create The Majestic Silver Strings, a monumental musical experience to be released on CD, with bonus DVD, March 1, 2011 via New West Records. The Majestic Silver Strings, produced by Buddy, is his re-imagination of country songs, loaded with guitars, atmosphere and attitude. Guest vocalists on the album include Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, Shawn Colvin, Lee Ann Womack, Chocolate Genius, Ann McCrary and Julie Miller. Rounding out the band are Dennis Crouch on bass and Jay Bellerose on drums. The Majestic Silver Strings and the album’s guests are among the most well respected and in-demand current musicians. Making a record of this caliber was a dream and took luck of scheduling to make come true. A bonus DVD with concert footage of the first, and only performance to date with Buddy, Marc, Bill and Greg playing the tracks selected for this project, will be included with the CD. The musicians re-interpret classic country songs written by some of the most esteemed songwriters including Lefty Frizzell, Roger Miller and George Jones, whose hit “Why Baby Why” is sung by Buddy on the record. The band also tackles a few traditional compositions and several new songs including “God’s Wing’d Horse” written by Julie Miller and Bill Frisell. Many projects boast one guest vocalist; Buddy has six revered friends lending their voices to the recording including Emmylou Harris on “Why I’m Walkin’” and Lee Ann Womack on “Meds.” Buddy also does a duet of “I Want To Be With You Always” with Patty Griffin.

  • Meshell Ndegeocello Meshell Ndegeocello
MESHELL NDEGEOCELLO NNNewNewewew album : «: « Weather » out on the 8th of November Biography by Romain Grossman Meshell has changed. So has her music. It’s more peaceful, freer. Her new album, Weather, cloaks itself in the colours of autumn, full of in-between shades and hues and with a certain mildness to it. The singer has let her feelings carry her along. Meshell has never been scared of sharing her most intimate thoughts in explicit or colourful terms that always come from the heart. As ever, she is true to herself. But Weather ’s folk sensibility and pregnant acoustic melodies make this a supremely accessible album. “For a long time I was at war with everyone else. I dug my heels in, I fought hard. That’s all over now. I have my opinions, but they’re no longer a source of conflict with the rest of the world.” On Weather Meshell’s usually deep vocals slip into a register more like a whisper, sharing secrets about subjects that are straightforward, almost light-hearted. She has pared down her style to something like pop. “I started to write this album on the guitar and you can hear it. The final atmosphere’s gentler.” And then the singer agreed without fuss to put her fate in the hands of a producer. Joe Henry (Ani DiFranco, Bettye Lavette, Allen Toussaint, etc.) helped her reveal a different side to herself. And Meshell went along with this. “I’ve known him since the Bitter album; Craig Street introduced us. I hadn’t called on someone from outside for several albums.

  • " African Blues": the Sound and History of a Transatlantic Discourse
“African Blues”: The Sound and History of a Transatlantic Discourse A thesis submitted to The Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music in the Division of Composition, Musicology, and Theory of the College-Conservatory of Music by Saul Meyerson-Knox BA, Guilford College, 2007 Committee Chair: Stefan Fiol, PhD Abstract This thesis explores the musical style known as “African Blues” in terms of its historical and social implications. Contemporary West African music sold as “African Blues” has become commercially successful in the West in part because of popular notions of the connection between American blues and African music. Significant scholarship has attempted to cite the “home of the blues” in Africa and prove the retention of African music traits in the blues; however much of this is based on problematic assumptions and preconceived notions of “the blues.” Since the earliest studies, “the blues” has been grounded in discourse of racial difference, authenticity, and origin-seeking, which have characterized the blues narrative and the conceptualization of the music. This study shows how the bi-directional movement of music has been used by scholars, record companies, and performing artist for different reasons without full consideration of its historical implications. i Copyright © 2013 by Saul Meyerson-Knox All rights reserved. ii Acknowledgements I would like to express my utmost gratitude to my advisor, Dr. Stefan Fiol for his support, inspiration, and enthusiasm. Dr. Fiol introduced me to the field of ethnomusicology, and his courses and performance labs have changed the way I think about music.

Nick Gold, the Musical Matchmaker Who Gave Mali the Blues • Ali Farka Touré, left, with Nick Gold, who recorded him for World Circuit Records in sessions in Bamako, Mali, in 2004. Two of the resulting albums are due out this week. Mr. Touré died in March. Credit... By Ben Sisario • July 23, 2006 FOR the final recording sessions of Ali Farka Touré, the sage Malian guitarist who died in March, Nick Gold chose a particularly memorable location. Mr. Gold, the proprietor of World Circuit Records, Mr. Touré’s label, needed a very large space, and Mr. Touré, who was suffering from cancer, wanted to remain in Mali. So a temporary studio was set up on the top floor of the thatched-roof Hôtel Mandé in Bamako, the capital, where the wide windows offered panoramas of life along the Niger River. “All you can see is river and grasslands and villages and people in pirogues and canoes and boats,” Mr. Gold said in a recent interview. “It’s just beautiful.” Over a few fruitful weeks in June and July 2004 Mr. Gold produced three albums. The first, “In the Heart of the Moon,” by Mr. Touré and the kora (harp) player Toumani Diabaté, was released last year and won a Grammy Award for best traditional world-music album. The other two will be released on Tuesday: “Boulevard de l’Indépendance” by Mr. Diabaté’s 30-odd-piece Symmetric Orchestra — hence the need for the big room — and Mr. Touré’s “Savane,” a series of steady, pulsating meditations on the virtues of farming and hard work, in music that bridges modal West African traditions with the blues.
