Tommy Bartlett, 1914 – 1998 – A Master of Entertainment – Tommy Bartlett was born July 11, 1914 and was raised in Milwaukee, Wis. He passed away September 6, 1998, in Madison, Wis., at the age of 84. Tommy began his career in radio at the age of 13 at WISN in Milwaukee. In 1931, at age 17, Tommy was called to Chicago, IL where he landed an enviable staff announcer's job for CBS Radio. By the time Tommy Bartlett was 20 years old, he was announcing as many as seven radio soap operas a day. Tommy is credited with originating the first call-in radio talk show in 1935 at KMOX in St. Louis. Tommy hosted the “Welcome Travelers” program for 15 years on radio and during the early days of television. Tommy’s broadcasting career included work for 10 radio stations and the three major networks of the day, ABC, CBS and NBC. In 1942, Tommy interrupted his show business career to become an Air Corps flight instructor and a Northwest Airlines pilot. Tommy turned his show business talent to the production of water-ski shows shortly after seeing a performance of the sport at the Chicago Railroad Fair in 1949. In the early 1950s, Tommy had as many as four water-ski shows on the road, simultaneously, in cities throughout the United States, Canada and the Far East. Tommy took his ski show performers to four World’s Fairs, was part of the President’s Cultural Exchange Program and toured with the USO.

Downer Ave UPPER EAST SIDENorthpoint NEIGHBORHOOD DESCRIPTION Northpoint is a long, narrow neighborhood that is adjacent to Lake Park and encompasses a small section of Back Bay Park. The housing stock ranges from large mansions along Lake Drive, Terrace Avenue, and Wahl Avenue to a mix of smaller, more modest houses on its western boundaries. The predominant architectural styles are English Tudor, followed by Colonial, and Georgian, French, Mediterranean, and German Renaissance. The preservation movement took hold in Northpoint in the 1970s, when development began to threaten the neighborhood’s low-density residential identity. In 1973, residents founded the Water Tower Landmark Trust, which was later renamed the Historic Water Tower Neighbor- hood Inc. It became one of the most effectual preservation organizations in the city, lobbying for stricter building code enforcement and a new zoning ordinance. HISTORY As upscale as Milwaukee’s Northpoint neighborhood appears today, it had quite humble beginnings. The first known property built within its borders was a poor house. The same year that the City of Milwaukee was chartered, the city purchased a 40-acre parcel to be used “for welfare or charitable” purposes within the boundaries of what is today Maryland and Downer and Bradford and North. The hospital for the indigent was built in 1846, followed by a “pesthouse” for patients Todays neighborhood- with infectious diseases. Although it may be hard to look past current events, it is important to pause and celebrate the milestone we hit last year when the Wisconsin Dells area saw an increase in visitor spending for the 10th consecutive year. 2019 was a year of growth and development, and we experienced this growth across multiple categories. With this continued upward trend, it is obvious Wisconsin Dells continues to be a favorite destination to millions of devoted Midwest vacationers. In Wisconsin Dells, it’s water. Read on to learn how the Wisconsin River first influenced commerce and tourism in little Wisconsin Dells, and how simple H2O turned it into the huge draw it is today. So jump in, the water’s fine! 500 Million Years of History Glacial Lake Wisconsin We’ll try to condense 500 million years into a paragraph or two. This is important, though, because you have to look that far back to understand how Wisconsin Dells came to be the vacation destination it is today. During the Cambrian Period, this community was the sandy shore of an ancient sea. Over time, the sand was compacted, and percolating groundwater cemented the sand into rock. That rock went virtually untouched for millions of years. Fast forward to 19,000 years ago, when a glacier extended to within four miles east of the area, never touching the Dells. That glacier melted about 15,000 years ago and formed Glacial Lake Wisconsin, a lake about the size of Utah’s Great Salt Lake and as deep as 150 feet. The last ice that held back the waters of Glacial Lake Wisconsin began to melt. The failed ice dam unleashed a catastrophic flood; the lake’s depth dropped to 50 feet. The meltwaters cut deep, narrow gorges and unusual rock formations into the sandstone and formed the steep-sided canyons and bluffs you see today lining the Wisconsin River.

Tutkimuskyselyn kohderyhmäksi valikoitui vuosina 1997-2018 SAM:in kesätyöohjelmaan osallistuneet suo- malaiset.
