Jean Harlow ~ 20 Films Harlean Harlow Carpenter - later Jean Harlow - was born in Kansas City, Missouri on 3 March 1911. After being signed by director Howard Hughes, Harlow's first major appearance was in Hell's Angels (1930), followed by a series of critically unsuccessful films, before signing with Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer in 1932. Harlow became a leading lady for MGM, starring in a string of hit films including Red Dust (1932), Dinner At Eight (1933), Reckless (1935) and Suzy (1936). Among her frequent co-stars were William Powell, Spencer Tracy and, in six films, Clark Gable. Harlow's popularity rivalled and soon surpassed that of her MGM colleagues Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer. By the late 1930s she had become one of the biggest movie stars in the world, often nicknamed "The Blonde Bombshell" and "The Platinum Blonde" and popular for her "Laughing Vamp" movie persona. She died of uraemic poisoning on 7 June 1937, at the age of 26, during the filming of Saratoga. The film was completed using doubles and released a little over a month after Harlow's death. In her brief life she married and lost three husbands (two divorces, one suicide) and chalked up 22 feature film credits (plus another 21 short / bit-part non-credits, including Chaplin's City Lights). The American Film Institute (damning with faint praise?) ranked her the 22nd greatest female star in Hollywood history. SCREEN PLAYS: FROM BROADWAY TO HOLLYWOOD, 1920 - 1966 presents more than 100 films that drew their commercially and critically successful plots and characters, and their talented actors, writers, and directors from Broadway. The series, which continues through October 3, features such Broadway actors as George Arliss, the Barrymores, Shirley Booth, Marlon Brando, Ina Claire, John Garfield, Julie Harris, Helen Hayes, Judy Holliday, the Lunts, Fredric March, Sidney Poitier, Otis Skinner, Laurette Taylor, and Mae West re-creating on film the roles that made them stage legends. While the relationship between the Broadway musical and the Hollywood musical is well-established, this exhibition spotlights the relationship between the Broadway play and the Hollywood film. Since the beginning of the studio system, Hollywood has sought plays that could be adapted into so-called prestige films, adding a patina of class and sophistication. The retrospective places particular emphasis on films made from plays produced by the Theatre Guild, the Group Theatre, and the Playwrights' Company, since many members of these companies made lasting contributions both on Broadway and in Hollywood. One of the founders of Hollywood, he remained a leader of the industry for more than forty years. It was his name, even more than those of his stars, which guaranteed the public would flock to each new offering and made him the most successful di- rector in Hollywood history. De Mille’s name conjures images of Moses parting the Red Sea or Samson top- pling a temple. Yet there was much more to De Mille than these familiar biblical epics. Of the 70 films he directed, the majority were made before the coming of sound and they reveal a vastly different filmmaker. Confidently developing alongside his young art, he is willing to tackle social problems, examine sexual re- lations with a modern eye and never scared to reveal the darker aspects of hu- man nature. -

D.W. Griffith, the Keystone Kops and the Canadian Connection By Wyndham Wise In his fulsome introduction in Maclean's as' (September 2003) to an excerpt from Kay Armatage's revisionist biography of the Victoria—born Nell Shipman, The Girl from God's Country: Nell Shipman and the Silent Cinema, crit- ic Brian D. Johnson claimed Shipman to be "Canada's first movie star." Johnson was not entirely accurate, however. Shipman was only a bit player in the history of Hollywood, never more than a starlet. Ten years prior to her appearence in Back to God's Country, which was released in 1919, no less than three actresses could lay claim to the title of the first Canadian movie star, and, remark- ably, they all appeared in films by D.W. Griffith, the legendary father of cinema, at the Biograph studios between 1908 and 1912. Biograph is the abbreviated name commonly used for the American Mutoscope and Biograph Company. It developed into one of the most active forces in the early years of American cinema and its studios at 11 East 14th Street in New York City were the spawn- ing ground for such formative talents as Griffith's stock company of players at Biograph included three Canadian leading ladies: Florence Lawrence, Florence LaBadie and Mary Pickford. Griffith and Mack Sennett. An itinerant actor and fledgling playwright, Griffith joined Biograph in early 1908, first as a writer and then as an actor. Later that same year, he directed his first film, The Adventures of Dollie. Over the next 18 months (from June 1908 to December 1909), Griffith personally directed all of the Biograph pictures, an incredible 200 TAKE ONE 37 Florence Lawrence Picture Company of America at the end of 1909. -

Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts in America Southern Methodist University The Southern Methodist University Oral History Program was begun in 1972 and is part of the University’s DeGolyer Institute for American Studies. The goal is to gather primary source material for future writers and cultural historians on all branches of the performing arts- opera, ballet, the concert stage, theatre, films, radio, television, burlesque, vaudeville, popular music, jazz, the circus, and miscellaneous amateur and local productions. The Collection is particularly strong, however, in the areas of motion pictures and popular music and includes interviews with celebrated performers as well as a wide variety of behind-the-scenes personnel, several of whom are now deceased. Most interviews are biographical in nature although some are focused exclusively on a single topic of historical importance. The Program aims at balancing national developments with examples from local history. Interviews with members of the Dallas Little Theatre, therefore, serve to illustrate a nation-wide movement, while film exhibition across the country is exemplified by the Interstate Theater Circuit of Texas. The interviews have all been conducted by trained historians, who attempt to view artistic achievements against a broad social and cultural backdrop. Many of the persons interviewed, because of educational limitations or various extenuating circumstances, would never write down their experiences, and therefore valuable information on our nation’s cultural heritage would be lost if it were not for the S.M.U. Oral History Program. Interviewees are selected on the strength of (1) their contribution to the performing arts in America, (2) their unique position in a given art form, and (3) availability. -
