One of the milestones on the London, UK Crossrail project this year was the successful launching I June of a 10,000 tonne, 120 m long bridge over the Great Western Main Line, which connects London to the west of England and South Wales. The bridge will be part of a new rail link to London’s Heathrow Airport.

It is certainly true that austerity measures have bitten into public construction. Although this 162 kW engine is fairly simple, with its applications, models like the new 11.8 tonne WA200-7 from mechanical fuel pump and Tier 2 emissions compliance, it is a unique engine designed Komatsu America and 15.3 tonne WA320-7 in Europe can fi nd specifi cally for this application – you will not fi nd a 9.3 litre engine elsewhere in the Cummins themselves in a variety of applications. range. So as opposed to the Z-bar linkage found on heavier machines, The factory passed its milestone of producing its 10,000th engine in June this year, and the these smaller loaders feature Komatsu’s parallel Z-bar, which still immediate target is to be running at 50,000 engines per year for the Chinese excavator and provides high breakout forces, but which can also parallel lift for wheeled loader sector. These engines are for use by Liugong, but also for sale to other OEMs fork and pallet jobs. through Cummins’ national sales network. Both machines are fi tted with Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB engines. On the WA320-7, this makes for -10% less fuel consumption and +12% more torque than on the predecessor model, the WA320-6. Some of the fuel savings are due to Komatsu’s Smart Loader Logic system, which automatically matches the engine torque and revs to the loads being placed on the machine’s systems. Th is means fuel is not wasted but performance is not sacrifi ced. At 11 to 12.4 tonnes operating weight, Hitachi’s new ZW140- 5 and ZW150-5 loaders are in a similar bracket. Th ese machines claim a huge -20% reduction in fuel consumption over previous models thanks to the use of a hydrostatic transmission (HST), and a display in the cab also helps by telling the operator when the machine is being used at its most economical. Auto engine shutdown is available as an option, and this prevents unnecessary fuel use by stopping the engine after the machine has stood in neutral with the parking brake on for a minute. Likewise, Liebherr’s latest mid-sized wheeled loaders feature a hydrostatic drive, which the company says contributes to a -25% >

Th e 193 kW engine is said to contribute to a 16% overall fuel saving on the 457, compared to the previous model. Schindler lifts Elevator technology is a limiting factor

oncepts for the fi rst mile-high building already exist. However, development is not expected for another 20 years, simply because elevator technology needs to C catch up. Current elevator technology is limited to buildings of around 600 m high, mainly due to challenges with braking and cabling. However, manufacturers are working on solutions. Swiss lift manufacturer Schindler is experienced in working on high-rise developments. It is currently installing 34 elevators, including 30 Schindler 7000 high-rise elevators, in Marina One Residences, rising in Singapore’s new Central Business District. Th e MAC system is also being used on the new Roche Tower in Basel, Switzerland. When completed, the tower will be 178 m high. Th e 41-storey tower has already passed the 130 m mark and is progressing at a storey a week. Peri has supplied formwork and scaffolding for the Warsaw Spire office tower, which, at a height of 220 m, will be the tallest office building in Warsaw on completion.

Th e development consists of 44 blocks being built on a 300- acre site on the Anatolia side of Istanbul. Tight spot In Munich’s old town, a Wolff 166B crane with hydraulic luffi ng gear is helping build a new offi ce building in a tight corner of the city. Construction work is ongoing in adjacent sites, which is why the contractor Riedel Bau opted for the compact fl at-top crane. Th e crane’s luffi ng jib can be raised to an almost vertical position, meaning it takes up minimal space when not in use. “Because of its design, the Wolff can slew in the minimum of space without projecting beyond the site, meaning that we can work without any danger of collision,” said Norbert Zährl, site Reed’s new C90S Model High-Rise Concrete Pump is manager for Riedel Bau. specifically designed for mid-rise and high-rise work. omatsu has launched its intelligent machine control excavators in Europe. K Th e PC210LCi-10, unveiled as a prototype at last year’s Bauma exhibition, features a new machine control and guidance system that improves accuracy, effi ciency and safety. Komatsu says its control and guidance system means the operator will no longer have to worry about digging too deep or damaging a target surface, improving effi ciency, precision and safety on site. Th e system starts with a factory installed, fully integrated machine control system that includes stroke sensing hydraulic cylinders for the boom, arm and bucket, developed by Komatsu for angle from gyro and accelerometer data, while digging beyond the target depth on any given precise, real-time bucket edge positioning. Available as an option for the 14 to 18 m vertical reach MT telescopic handlers sold in Europe, the system is adapted for onsite applications where machines tend to idle between handling operations. Th e Stop&Go automatically cuts the engine after 30 seconds when it is not being used and when the hydraulic controls are not being operated. When the operator touches the accelerator or activates a control, the engine starts back up. It was jointly developed with manufacturer Poclain Hydraulics, based in France, to respond to user cycles of telescopic handlers. As an example, an MT 1840 IIIB telehandler, According to Manitou a machine can be in based on an average use of 800 hours/year, can idling mode an average of 30% of the time. save up to 180 hours/year run time.
