Nkomazi Local Municipality Presentation on Waste Projects. 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS GEOGRAPHIC LAYOUT 3 WASTE MANAGEMENT PROJECTS 4-35 Conserve Water, Save Energy and Keep Nkomazi Clean 3 GEOGRAPHICAL LAYOUT The Nkomazi Local Municipality is located in the eastern part of Ehlanzeni District Municipality in Mpumalanga Province. The municipality is strategically placed between Swaziland (North of Swaziland) and Mozambique (east of Mozambique). It is linked with Swaziland by two provincial roads the R570 and R571 and with Mozambique by a railway line and the main national road (N4), which forms the Maputo Corridor. Nkomazi municipality has been declared as a CRDP municipality. Nkomazi consists of 54 villages including 5 urban areas with a total of 33 wards. Conserve Water, Save Energy and Keep Nkomazi Clean 4 WASTE MANAGEMENT PROJECTS Our goal is providing better waste management techniques for the benefit of the environment and the society at large Waste collection in Nkomazi is done by the Municipality it is not privatized or contracted. Out of the 82126 households only 8375 households are paying for the services and these households are in urban areas which are Malelane , Kaapmuiden, Hectorspruit, Marlothpark and Komatipoort. The urban areas receive twice or three times a week collection while rural receive once a week. Through this initiative jobs are created through the Expanded Public Works Programme. We have created1132 job opportunities since 2010 till date. The responsibilities are street picking around main roads of serviced and unserviced areas. AWARENESS AND CLEAN-UP CAMPAIGNS PROGRAMMES The Municipality is committed to create awareness on waste and environmental issues and to educate and inform. During the campaigns we work with different stakeholders from government departments and their agencies, private and non-government organisations. All our campaigns are published on local news papers and interviews are done by Nkomazi FM through the office of Communications. We have achieved 77 awareness campaigns in the 2014/15 financial year.
