It is a volcanic land of approximately 2,880 square kilometers, with sharp topographical relief, the highest elevation being over 3,000 meters. Its popula- tion, which approaches 300,000 persons, is composed essentially of descendants of old French colonists, Negroes who came as slaves from Madagascar, Mozambique, and other parts of Africa, some Chinese, and many Hindus. It is engaged principally in the cultiva- tion and processing of sugar cane. Although in all likelihood its existence had been known since the Middle Ages to Arab voyagers in the Indian Ocean, the island was not discovered by Westerners until the sixteenth century. French colonization, the only colonization really carried out there, dates from the second half of the seventeenth century. It was undertaken originally by the French India Company, which, under various forms, held the island of the King like a feudal land for an entire century. This epoch saw the first influx of settlers, the impor- tation of slaves, and the introduction of coffee and sugar cane. It was also during this period that Mahe de La Bourdonnais organized the lie de France (Mauritius2) and Bourbon (Reunion3) as eco- nomic and strategic fueling stations on the water route to the Indies. -

DIRECTORATE OF INFORMATION & COMMUNICATION Press Release No: /2020 Date: 18 Nov 2020 Venue: Addis ABaBa, Ethiopia Slow progress in meeting commitment to 2020 as the year of universal ratification of Maputo protocol A two-day meeting convened to evaluate the status of the ratification, domestication and implementation of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa, commonly referred to as the Maputo Protocol on Women’s Rights, has concluded with strong recommendations on how to accelerate actions on the commitment to African women. Described as a vanguard document at the time of its adoption in 2003, the Maputo Protocol remains one of the most progressive legal instruments providing a comprehensive set of human rights for African women. It translates Africa’s commitment to invest in the development and empowerment of women and girls, who constitute the majority constituent of the population. Convened by the African Union Commission Women, Gender and Development Directorate in collaboration with and the Gender, Peace and Security Programme of the AUC Peace and Security Department and the Solidarity for African Women’s Rights the meetings held on the 17-18 November 2020 brought together African Union Experts responsible for Gender Equality and Women’s Affairs; the Pan-African Parliament; Civil Society Organizations, women’s rights organizations, women’s movements and youth organizations to evaluate the progress achieved especially at the national level, in protecting and promoting the rights of women as encapsulated in the Protocol. In deliberating on the advancement of women’s rights, the meeting noted that across the continent, a number of countries have enacted laws against sexual and gender based violence as well as harmful cultural practices while others have established dedicated national machineries to promote and protect the rights of women. -

The study area is situated on topographical map 1:50 000, 2531AA KIEPERSOL, which is in the Mpumalanga Province. This area falls under the jurisdiction of the Mbombela Local Municipality, and the Ehlanzeni District Municipality. The National Heritage Resources Act, no 25 (1999)(NHRA), protects all heritage resources, which are classified as national estate. The NHRA stipulates that any person who intends to undertake a development, is subjected to the provisions of the Act. The applicant, Mbombela Municipality, who is requesting the development of the new Nkambeni cemetery (with access roads, parking, security offices and ablution facilities), is faced with a challenge of providing land for burial purposes. The current cemetery, servicing the Nkambeni community is already running out of burial space. The proposed site is 41 ha in extent. -
