  • How to Get an AKC® Number So Your Dog Can Earn an Official Title
We’ve Got Your Number! How to Get An AKC® Number So Your Dog Can Earn an Official Title To compete or earn AKC titles, your dog must have AKC number. We create titles at AKC by attaching the title to the dog’s number. This number can be one of 3 types: 1. an AKC registration number (your purebred dog has “papers.” You would have gotten these from the breeder), or, 2. a PAL Number (Purebred Alternative Listing) for purebred dogs of AKC breeds with no papers (such as rescue or shelter dogs), or, 3. an AKC Canine PartnersSM number for mixed breed dogs, or dogs otherwise ineligible for AKC registration such as purebreds from other countries that are not AKC recognized breeds. All dogs can enroll in the AKC Canine Partners program. For PAL (which used to be called ILP), see: www.akc.org/reg/ilpex.cfm For AKC Canine Partners, see: www.akc.org/canine_partners/ Where do AKC dollars go? AKC uses your registration dollars for many public education initiatives including promoting responsible dog ownership. All of the competing registries are for-profit companies. • Created and support the AKC Canine Health Foundation, which funds research projects focusing on the genetics of disease, the canine genome map, and clinical studies. AKC has donated more than $15 million to the Canine Health Foundation since 1995. • Award $240,000 in scholarships annually to veterinary and veterinary technical students and youths active in the sport of purebred dogs. • Conduct approximately 5,000 kennel inspections annually to ensure the integrity of the AKC registry and monitor care and conditions at kennels across the country.

  • Local Events 2012
Local Events 2012 Thanks you to all the clubs and dog organizations that hosted AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day events this year. With over 630 events reported to us from across the country, the celebration was a huge success! Below, please enjoy some event recaps and photos submitted by some of our event holding clubs and organizations. Abilene Kennel Club Abilene Kennel Club had many breeds on hand for the public to meet. Deacon Mark Main from St. Francis Church performed a Blessing of the Animals and the club also offered CGC testing, microchipping, obedience demonstrations and a demo from the Abilene Police Department K-9 Unit. A Humane Society volunteer ran fun games like “find a hot dog in a stinky old shoe.” -MaryJane Dewitt, RDOD Chairman Arapahoe Kennel Club Arapahoe Kennel Club held its 6th Annual Bark in the Park and Responsible Dog Ownership Day on September 16, 2012. This year, the club offered demonstrations of agility, flyball, dancing dogs, obedience, rally, Junior Showmanship, and K9 nosework. Along with all these demonstrations, breed clubs and individuals participated in a Meet the Breed demonstration as well. There was breed representation from most of the groups. A local Police K9 unit attended as did the Alie Foundation. The Alie Foundation was created by Richard Berrelez to honor his granddaughter who was kidnapped. They donate dogs and equipment to local police departments to help find other missing people. Arapahoe KC also had a very popular kids booth where coloring books, clay, and instruction on how to approach dogs and dog responsibility were available.

The broadcast media is just now recognizing what “dog people” already know: there are lots of fun activities around for dogs and their owners to enjoy together. And, with a little research, you and your canine companion can explore new activities throughout the Puget Sound. (Note: This listing is not intended to be complete. It just touches on some of the more common organized dog sports and activities. If you’re interested in something not referenced here (such as lure coursing, weight pulling, etc.) contact the author and she’ll attempt to help you find what you’re looking for!) • Conformation dog shows. Dozens of American Kennel Club (AKC) dog shows are held in this area every year, attracting thousands of dogs and their owners as they compete for breed championship points. Considered by some to be the “beauty contest” of the dog world, these events help recognize purebred dogs with the necessary physical and mental traits worthy of the title “Champion.” • Agility trials. Chances are you’ve seen this fun sport on TV. Dogs climbing, jumping, zipping and zooming over, under and through various obstacles. Agility is fun for all shapes and sizes of purebred as well as mixed- breed dogs, and there are competitions nearly every weekend within an hour or so drive from Seattle.
