The Boston Conservatory, 2007 Committee Chair: Dr. Jonathan Kregor, Ph.D. Abstract The 1918 ballet, Parade, and its music by Erik Satie is a fascinating, and historically significant example of the avant-garde, yet it has not received full attention in the field of musicology. This thesis will provide a study of Parade and the avant-garde, and specifically discuss the ways in which the avant-garde creates a dialectic between the expressiveness of the artwork and the listener’s emotional response. Because it explores the traditional boundaries of art, the avant-garde often resides outside the normal vein of aesthetic theoretical inquiry. However, expression theories can be effectively used to elucidate the aesthetics at play in Parade as well as the implications for expressability present in this avant-garde work. The expression theory of Jenefer Robinson allows for the distinction between expression and evocation (emotions evoked in the listener), and between the composer’s aesthetical goal and the listener’s reaction to an artwork. This has an ideal application in avant-garde works, because it is here that these two categories manifest themselves as so grossly disparate. -

Igor Stravinsky Source: http://www.8notes.com/biographies/stravinsky.asp ‘Even during his lifetime, Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) was a legendary figure. His once revolutionary work were modern classics, and he influenced three generations of composers and other artists. Cultural giants like Picasso and T. S. Eliot were his friends. President John F. Kennedy honored him at a White House dinner in his eightieth year. 'Stavinsky was born in Oranienbaum, Russia, near St. Petersburg (Leningrad), grew up in a musical atmosphere, and studied with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. He had his first important opportunity in 1909, when the impresario Sergei Diaghilev heard his music. Diaghilev was the director of the Russian Ballet, an extremely influential troupe which employed great painters as well as important dances, choreographers, and composers. Diaghilev first asked Stravinsky to orchestrate some piano pieces by Chopin as ballet music and then, in 1910, commissioned an original ballet, The Firebird, which was immensely successful. A year later (1911), Stravinsky's second ballet, Petrushka, was performed, and Stravinsky was hailed as a modern master. When his third ballet, The Rite of Spring (a savage, brutal portrayal of a prehistoric ritual in which a young girl is sacrificed to the god of Spring.), had its premiere in Paris in 1913, a riot erupted in the audience--spectators were shocked and outraged by its pagan primitivism, harsh dissonance, percussiveness, and pounding rhythms--but it too was recognized as a masterpiece and influenced composers all over the world. 'During World War I, Stravinsky sought refuge in Switzerland; after the armistice, he moved to France, his home until the onset of World War II, when he came to the United States. -

These lyrics present an interesting paradox – a man who longed for his music to be accepted by the American public, yet remained indifferent to the social mores of the time. Porter offered trenchant social commentary aimed at a society restricted by social taboos and cultural conventions. The argument develops systematically through a chronological and contextual study of the influences of people and events on a man and his music. The prosodic intonation and imagistic texture of the lyrics demonstrate an intimate correlation between personality and composition which, in turn, is supported by the biographical content. Current American ballet stems from the vision of choreographer George Balanchine, who set ballet standards through his educational institution, School of American Ballet, and dance company, New York City Ballet. These organizations are currently the largest-budget performing company and training facility in the United States, and, along with other major US ballet companies, have adopted Balanchine’s preference for ultra thin, light skinned, young, heteronormative dancers. Due to their financial stability and power, these dance companies set the standard for ballet in America, making it difficult for dancers who do not fit these narrow characteristics to succeed and thrive in the field. The ballet field must adapt to an increasingly diverse society while upholding artistic integrity to the art form’s values. Those who live in America make up a heterogeneous community with a blend of worldwide cultures, but ballet has been slow to focus on diversity in company rosters. -

ven before her birth in 1913, Irina Nijinska w.as Choreographer making history. Her uncle, Vaslav Nijinsky, Bronislava Nijinska in Revival: E was choreographing Le Sacre du Printemps, with her mother, Bronislava Nijinska, as the Chosen Maiden. In Paris, where the family settled in the 1920s, Irina studied with her mother's student Eugene Lipitzki, graduating at fifteen to her mother's own cla~s The DTH revival of , for the Ida Rubinstein company, where she also sat in Rondo Capriccioso, Nijinska's on rehearsals. Irina made her professional debut in London in last ballet, is ·her daugther 1930. The company was headed by Olga Spessivtzeva, Irina's latest project. and Irina danced under the name Istomina, the bal lerina beloved by Pushkin. That year, too, she toured with the Opera Russe a Paris, one of many ensembles · associated with her mother in which she performed. These included the Rubinstein company, as well as Theatre de la Danse Nijinska, the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, and the Polish Ballet. -

Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts presents New York City Ballet in Two Programs of Repertory including George Balanchine’s Haieff Divertimento NYCB Resident Choreographer and Artistic Advisor Justin Peck’s recent work Principia George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins’s masterpiece Firebird March 31–April 5, 2020 in the Kennedy Center Opera House with the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra (WASHINGTON)— New York City Ballet (NYCB) returns to the Kennedy Center for its annual engagement with two stellar repertory programs, March 31–April 5, in the Opera House. Along with classic works by George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins, the engagement includes a recent work from Resident Choreographer and Artistic Advisor Justin Peck, as well as George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins’s masterpiece Firebird. Classic NYCB (March 31 and April 1 & 5): The company’s opening night program includes two works by George Balanchine: Haieff Divertimento and Stravinsky Violin Concerto, along with Christopher Wheeldon’s Liturgy and Edwaard Liang’s new Lineage. Composed in five sections, Haieff Divertimento is choreographed for a leading couple and four supporting couples dressed in simple costumes. It features a blues pas ~ more ~ de deux and combines popular American dance idioms and modern concert dance with classic ballet. Stravinsky Violin Concerto features two of Balanchine’s most ingenious and unique pas de deux. Christopher Wheeldon’s Liturgy is set to music by Arvo Pärt, with two dancers who separate and return to one another with ever-increasing intensity. The company also brings Edwaard Liang’s newest work, Lineage, a ballet for 16 dancers set to music by English composer Oliver Davis. -
