Yarborough, Co-Chair My project examines the historical ideas of American identity that developed in early U.S. periodicals, the most popular form of print in the 18th- and 19th-century U.S. In periodicals, I show, American identity was often imagined as a category distinct from nationality or U.S. citizenship, and expressed a host of local and contingent meanings. In Fall 2011 he matriculated into the doctoral program in the English Department of the University of California, Los Angeles. viii Introduction “American” Literature Beyond Books With the exception of the Bible, if people read in the eighteenth- or nineteenth-century United States, they most likely read periodicals. Periodicals (that is, print which is published periodically, like newspapers and magazines) grew in number, frequency, circulation, format, and readership specificity in the U.S.’s early decades, evolving to suit the lives and interests of a growing number of readers. This proliferation of periodical print into the daily lives of people across the U.S. did not go unnoticed. In 1835, in the midst of a wave of romantic nationalist book publications in the U.S., famous theorist of U.S. democracy Alexis de Tocqueville reflected on the state of U.S. print. “The only authors whom I acknowledge as American,” he wrote, “are the journalists. They indeed are not great writers, but they speak the language of the countrymen, and make themselves heard by them. Other authors are aliens…They amuse the mind, but they do not act upon the manners of the people.”1 For Tocqueville, “American” was less an aesthetic characterization than an indicator of a text’s proximity to the “language” of the author’s “countrymen.” The most distinctively “American” writers were also “not great writers.” If this valuation expressed a generic European cultural chauvinism toward writing in the U.S., Tocqueville’s description of non-“journalists” in the U.S.

    New York Painting Begins: Eighteenth-Century Portraits at the New-York Historical Society The New-York Historical Society holds one of the nation’s premiere collections of eighteenth-century American portraits. During this formative century a small group of native-born painters and European émigrés created images that represent a broad swath of elite colonial New York society -- landowners and tradesmen, and later Revolutionaries and Loyalists -- while reflecting the area’s Dutch roots and its strong ties with England. In the past these paintings were valued for their insights into the lives of the sitters, and they include distinguished New Yorkers who played leading roles in its history. However, the focus here is placed on the paintings themselves and their own histories as domestic objects, often passed through generations of family members. They are encoded with social signals, conveyed through dress, pose, and background devices. Eighteenth-century viewers would have easily understood their meanings, but they are often unfamiliar to twenty-first century eyes. These works raise many questions, and given the sparse documentation from the period, not all of them can be definitively answered: why were these paintings made, and who were the artists who made them? How did they learn their craft? How were the paintings displayed? How has their appearance changed over time, and why? And how did they make their way to the Historical Society? The state of knowledge about these paintings has evolved over time, and continues to do so as new discoveries are made. This exhibition does not provide final answers, but presents what is currently known, and invites the viewer to share the sense of mystery and discovery that accompanies the study of these fascinating works.

    The Superpowers The Superpowers: a short history is a highly original and important book surveying the development of the USA and Russia (in its tsarist, Soviet and post-Soviet phases) from the pre-twentieth century world of imperial powers to the present. It places the Cold War, from inception to ending, into the wider cultural, economic and political context. The Superpowers: a short history traces the intertwining history of the two powers chronologically. In a fascinating and innovative approach, the book adopts the metaphor of a lifespan to explore this evolutionary relationship. Commencing with the inheritance of the two countries up to 1898, the book continues by looking at their conception to 1921, including the effects of the First World War, gestation to 1945 with their period as allies during the Second World War and their youth examining the onset of the Cold War to 1968. The maturity phase explores the Cold War in the context of the Third World to 1991 and finally the book concludes by discussing the legacy the superpowers have left for the twenty- first century.
