  • Khorana Peepli Live FINAL
Peepli Live and No One Killed Jessica 66 Peepli Live and No One Killed Jessica: Remediating the “Bollywoodization” of Indian TV News Sukhmani Khorana Lecturer University of Wollongong Wollongong, Australia [email protected] Introduction: Evolution of “Bollywoodization” in Indian TV news In the third edition of her pioneering book on the Indian media business, Vanita Kohli-Khandekar makes the following observation: There are two media segments that define the contour, body and tastes of the Indian market. Television is one of them, the other being film. Both have a mesmerising hold over Indian audiences―and even over investors and advertisers.1 This article begins with this note because of the increasingly central place occupied by television in the Indian media sphere and the uniquely Indian context of the mutual interdependence of the television and film industries. While television has appropriated Hollywood film genres since its inception,2 in India, popular film culture is increasingly drawing on the pre-eminence of satellite television. A grasp of these facets of the subcontinent’s television story is essential before examining how TV news has taken on discursive and practice-based elements of the nation’s popular film culture, Bollywood. This will be undertaken through a close textual analysis of two recent Bollywood films, Peepli Live (2010) and No One Killed Jessica (2011). Both feature television journalism as an important narrative catalyst, or a remediator for the socio-political issues faced by the protagonist(s). In doing this, the films themselves turn into a remediation device for the Bollywoodization of news on Peepli Live and No One Killed Jessica 67 Indian television.

April 2017 -- SK Films, an award-winning producer and distributor of natural history entertainment, and HHMI Tangled Bank Studios, the acclaimed film production unit of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, announced today the IMAX/Giant Screen film AMAZON ADVENTURE will launch on April 18, 2017 at the World Premiere event at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. The film traces the extraordinary journey of naturalist and explorer Henry Walter Bates - the most influential scientist you’ve never heard of – who provided “the beautiful proof” to Charles Darwin for his then controversial theory of natural selection, the scientific explanation for the development of life on Earth. To my family, who taught me to seek out my own purpose and pursue it wholeheartedly; without you, I would have never taken the chance and moved to England for my Masters. To my professors, who became my trusted resources and friends, your endless and caring teachings have supported me in more ways than I can put into words. Finally, a special thanks to David Attenborough, Steve Irwin, Terri Irwin, Jane Goodall, Peter Gros, Jim Fowler, and so many others for making me fall in love with wildlife and spark a fire in my heart for their welfare. I grew up on wildlife films and television shows like Planet Earth, Blue Planet, March of the Penguins, Crocodile Hunter, Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom, Shark Week, and others – it was because of those programs that I first fell in love with nature as a kid, and I’ve taken that passion with me, my whole life.

  • SUGGESTED EXERCISES for Analysing Mockumentary
SUGGESTED EXERCISES for Analysing Mockumentary Any mockumentary can be analysed in terms of the reasons for its production, the ways in which it appropriates familiar codes and conventions of reality- based media (including documentary), and how audiences are encouraged to read it. THE INTENTIONS OF THE MOCKUMENTARY FILMMAKER 1. Compare mockumentary with April 1st news reports. Why are April Fools fake news stories produced, and how are they used in news bulletins? Are mockumentaries made for the same reasons? 2. Compare mockumentary with news hoaxes. Is a journalist who deliberately fakes footage or information, then pretends that it is real, the same as a mockumentary filmmaker? 3. Choose a mockumentary text, and make an assessment of the agendas behind its production – what is the filmmaker or television producer trying to achieve in using mockumentary? a. create a novelty or stunt event (e.g. the 1997 season premiere of television series ER staged a live television event in the form of a mockumentary) b. create a parody or satire (e.g. comedic feature film This is Spinal Tap uses mockumentary to mock the rise of 1980s heavy metal music, Forgotten Silver plays with a number of New Zealand stereotypes and myths) c. use an innovative storytelling approach, often through mimicking contemporary reality forms (e.g. The Blair Witch Project combines documentary and video diary forms to create a convincing horror story, Cloverfield uses a similar device to revitalise a conventional science fiction narrative, and Zero Day pretends to be a video diary of two high school students planning a Columbine-style massacre) d.

  • Crossroads Film and Television Program List
Crossroads Film and Television Program List This resource list will help expand your programmatic options for the Crossroads exhibition. Work with your local library, schools, and daycare centers to introduce age-appropriate books that focus on themes featured in the exhibition. Help libraries and bookstores to host book clubs, discussion programs or other learning opportunities, or develop a display with books on the subject. This list is not exhaustive or even all encompassing – it will simply get you started. Rural themes appeared in feature-length films from the beginning of silent movies. The subject matter appealed to audiences, many of whom had relatives or direct experience with life in rural America. Historian Hal Barron explores rural melodrama in “Rural America on the Silent Screen,” Agricultural History 80 (Fall 2006), pp. 383-410. Over the decades, film and television series dramatized, romanticized, sensationalized, and even trivialized rural life, landscapes and experiences. Audiences remained loyal, tuning in to series syndicated on non-network channels. Rural themes still appear in films and series, and treatments of the subject matter range from realistic to sensational. FEATURE LENGTH FILMS The following films are listed alphabetically and by Crossroads exhibit theme. Each film can be a basis for discussions of topics relevant to your state or community. Selected films are those that critics found compelling and that remain accessible. Identity Bridges of Madison County (1995) In rural Iowa in 1965, Italian war-bride Francesca Johnson begins to question her future when National Geographic photographer Robert Kincaid pulls into her farm while her husband and children are away at the state fair, asking for directions to Roseman Bridge.

(May 2013) Katie Patricia Bruner Department of Communication Texas A&M University Research Advisor: Dr. Jennifer Jones Barbour Department of Communication Docudrama films are some of the most popular and controversial movies ever made. Their box office success and critical acclaim have made them an enticing venture for filmmakers and studios, yet they can attract a firestorm of debate if handled incorrectly. Docudramas are a paradox in themselves; not completely fact, not completely fiction. Yet their power to influence and shape ideas is undeniable. And for the majority of Americans, docudramas serve as a commanding, if not singular, source of their knowledge about historical events. Because of this immense scope, there are important questions that need to be investigated about docudrama’s role in the creation of American public memory, and the lens through which it shows us historical events. This paper will investigate what makes docudramas uniquely complex, and how docudramas are important historical texts. Specifically, I will look at filmic portrayals of American involvement in World War II through content analysis of three major WWII docudramas.

  • PAJ77/No.03 Chin-C
AIN’T NO SUNSHINE The Cinema in 2003 Larry Qualls and Daryl Chin s 2003 came to a close, the usual plethora of critics’ awards found themselves usurped by the decision of the Motion Picture Producers Association of A America to disallow the distribution of screeners to its members, and to any organization which adheres to MPAA guidelines (which includes the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences). This became the rallying cry of the Independent Feature Project, as those producers who had created some of the most notable “independent” films of the year tried to find a way to guarantee visibility during award season. This issue soon swamped all discussions of year-end appraisals, as everyone, from critics to filmmakers to studio executives, seemed to weigh in with an opinion on the matter of screeners. Yet, despite this media tempest, the actual situation of film continues to be precarious. As an example, in the summer of 2003 the distribution of films proved even more restrictive, as theatres throughout the United States were block-booked with the endless cycle of sequels that came from the studios (Legally Blonde 2, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, Terminator 3, The Matrix Revolutions, X-2: X-Men United, etc.). A number of smaller films, such as the nature documentary Winged Migration and the New Zealand coming-of-age saga Whale Rider, managed to infiltrate the summer doldrums, but the continued conglomeration of distribution and exhibition has brought the motion picture industry to a stultifying crisis. And the issue of the screeners was the rallying cry for those working on the fringes of the industry, the “independent” producers and directors and small distributors.
