Won 8 WTA singles and 3 doubles titles. POINTS OF INTEREST: Noted to have an unusual playing style – particularly her two hand forehand and backhand – allegedly influenced by Monica Seles Introduced to tennis at age 6 by her father who coached her throughout most of her career though it was under the guidance of Amelie Mauresmo that she won Wimbledon in 2013. d darren cahill SUCCESS AT EVERY STAGE BY CHRIS ODDO The Player | Pro Tour 1984-1994 Darren Cahill was a short, skinny child. But even as one of the smallest kids in high school, he displayed athletic promise. The son of a prominent Aussie-rules football coach, Darren finally experienced a growth spurt. The development, ironically, marked the onset of knee problems. Cahill had his sights on the pro Tour and, at 17, began working with legendary Australian coach Bob Carmichael. After two years, Cahill would turn pro and later credit Carmichael for much of his accomplishments. “Bob [Carmichael] left a big mark on me. I would put down most of what I’ve learned about coaching primarily to him. It’s not only what I teach, but how I teach.” Constant knee injuries inhibited Cahill from producing consistent wins on the Tour. He would, however, advance to the semi-finals of the U.S. Open in 1988, his best result in a Major and where he beat Boris Becker in the second round. One year later he reached a career high ranking, No. 22. But by his mid-twenties Cahill endured double digit surgeries and suddenly found himself at a crossroad. “When I was 25 I was pretty much wiped out of the game.” Sidelined for three years, he would attempt a “mini-comeback,” as he calls it. But his efforts were fruitless, so a discouraged Cahill retired in 1994 at age 29. Cahill says his only regret as a tennis player is that he believes injuries prevented him from realizing his full potential.

The Australian Davis Cup Tennis Foundation News Celebrating the past, supporting the present and promoting the future. Produced for Members of the Foundation ABN 90 004 905 060 March 2017 Australia defeats Czech Republic 4-1 Congratulations to the Australian Davis Cup team of Nick Kyrgios, Jordan Thompson, Sam Groth, John Peers and Captain Lleyton Hewitt on their comprehensive victory over the Czech Republic at the Kooyong Tie on February 4th - 6th. This time the tie was held on the same surface as the Australian Open, rather than grass, and the surface seemed to suit our players, in particular Jordan Thompson, who played a great first rubber to defeat his higher ranked Czech opponent. He proved to be a very adequate replacement for Bernie Tomic who unfortunately had “scheduling problems” and missed the tie. The crowd was down on the previous tie v USA at Kooyong, perhaps because of the proximity to the Australian Open and the warmer weather in February. Kooyong did however provided some shaded seats and most of our members were not inconvenienced by the heat. The next tie will be in Brisbane against the USA from April 7th - 9th. While a rather upsetting coaching split and a trouncing of the World number 1 filled a year where progress was there for the tennis public to see but attitude and off court issues usually filled the journalists copy. 2006 Scrappy Murray prevails after sluggish start By Neil Harman, Tennis Correspondent Published at 12:00AM, January 4 2006 HIS first match of 2006 reassured Andy Murray’s followers yesterday that the element of his game that stands him in such stead as a professional of rare promise — his love of a scrap — is undimmed. From every standpoint, Murray’s defeat of Paolo Lorenzi, an Italian qualifier, in the first round of the Next Generation Adelaide International, was exactly the kind of thrash in the dark of which these first-week events are chock-full. He served seven aces, six double faults, broke serve seven times in 12 attempts, lost his own service three times and won the final five games. The one statistic to matter was a 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 victory and a place in the second round today against Tomas Berdych, a player being touted every bit as fiercely in his native Czech Republic as Murray is in Britain. Berdych’s last defeat was against Murray in the second round of the Davidoff Swiss Indoors in Basle in October, after which the Scot was almost buried in headlines about the passing of the British baton — he defeated Tim Henman in the first round — while Berdych went on to overhaul a star-studded field and lift the Paris Masters.
