2010-11 Men’s Tennis Outlook In his third year at the helm of Louisiana’s Men’s Tennis Program, head coach Mark Jeffrey will have a load of fresh new talent buoyed by strong core of veterans. The influx of new talent will see playing time right away as the Cajuns look to build off last year’s fourth-place finish in the Sun Belt. “I think these guys are very hard workers and are looking forward to getting the season started,” said head men’s tennis coach Mark Jeffrey. “We have great team chemistry which will help us throughout the season in reaching our goals.” Three letterwiners return from last year’s squad. Yanick Mandl, Colin Murray and Robert Voss all saw significant playing time last season. All three recorded double digit wins in singles with Murray leading the way with a 12-8 record. Mandl and Voss each reached 10 wins last year with Voss winning his last seven matches in a row. An international flair surrounds the incoming class. Nine newcomers, including eight freshmen, represent six different countries from across the globe. Players from Australia, Colombia, England, India, Sweden, along with three Americans, round out the newest members of the team. The Cajuns will host seven matches at the Cajun Courts and Culotta Tennis Center. “Our goals are simple. A top 60 national ranking, win the SUn Carlin Murray Belt Conference and make the NCAA Tournament,” added Jeffrey. “I feel very optimistic but at the same time nervous to see how things will pan out. 2010-11 Women’s Tennis Outlook Most coaches do not know what to expect when taking over a new job but in his first year at Louisiana, new women’s tennis head coach Gregory Harkins will have an advantage. Harkins comes to Louisiana after serving as the assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s teams at the College of Charleston since 2008. Harkins will have the benefit of a seasoned squad that returns six letterwinners that all saw significant playing time last season. Mia Gordon, Milou Israel, Briggit Marcovich, Julie Mazinova, Tara Vasovic and Audrey Wooland accounted for 111 of the 118 singles matches played last season. Of that group, Wooland – the Cajuns’ No. 1 player - and Mazionva – the Cajuns’ No. 2 – both posted double-digit wins last year. As a freshman, Wooland posted a 13-8 record and won seven of her last 10 matches. Mazinova looks to record her fourth- straight double-digit win season after leading the way last year with 16-4 mark. Each of the other four returners played in at least 14 matches last season. Joining the ranks of the seasoned veterans will be two newcomers. Sandra Appleyard is a sophomore-transfer from NAIA Nationals Runner-up, Auburn-Montogomery. Joining her is true freshman Sandra Ahlqvist, a native of Gothenberg, Sweden. The 2010-11 spring schedule will feature 17 matches with seven occurring at the Cajun Courts and Culotta Tennis Center.
